I wondered, why insert explosives when you could have inserted a tiny communications chip to intercept the paged messages and forwarded them to your own intelligence services? Long term this would have been much more fruitful than injuring, maiming or killing the users of the device. Maybe they put both in and the explosion was never intended to cause physical harm, maybe it was only ever meant to completely obliterate the communications chip that they didn't want to be reverse engineered. Makes sense because every device was obviously communicated to. I doubt the explosive was on a timer! If someone x-rayed or electronically scanned their pager and discovered it was transmitting mobile data that could be why all pagers were sent the "self-detonate" code.

I wondered, why insert explosives when you could have inserted a tiny communications chip to intercept the paged messages and forwarded them to your own intelligence services? Long term this would have been much more fruitful than injuring, maiming or killing the users of the device. Maybe they put both in and the explosion was never intended to cause physical harm, maybe it was only ever meant to completely obliterate the communications chip that they didn't want to be reverse engineered. Makes sense because every device was obviously communicated to. I doubt the explosive was on a timer! If someone x-rayed or electronically scanned their pager and discovered it was transmitting mobile data that could be why all pagers were sent the "self-detonate" code.
