I grow microgreens in Chicago and agree with her. It's a lot of work and if you don't live in a foodie city, you aren't making $5k a month. My advice is to start by growing food for yourself and family. Master the craft, get you timelines down and dial in your equipment before you even think about selling it to restaurants. Because what most channels won't tell you is that if you do start regularly selling to a restaurant, they are going to expect the amount they want, when they want it, and will not accept anything but perfection when you deliver it. If you aren't ready to handle that level of precision growing, you aren't ready to sell yet. Just my 2 cents.
Same, I grew microgreens for an SQF certified business in StL for 3 years. You're lucky if you break even, past all the running costs, marketing for x amount of clientele, etc. It wasn't my own business. I got paid for labor & was exhausted with managing. There's a lot of upkeep regardless of active or passive fiscal expense.

Nearly all microgreen growers grow indoors, and never let any of their seedlings mature to seed. So the growers in that market are almost always reliant on seed sourcers.
You are so right, there is nothing passive about growing microgreens as a business. I did it myself and I still teach how to grow microgreens. You are committed 365 days a year. If you shut down because you're going away on vacation and have nobody to cover for you not only will you be shut down during the time that you're back but then you have the growth period where you don't sell anything.

It’s not that much work! I do agree on it depends on where you live. I live in a big city and near a lot of health conscious wealthy areas. I have just started my Microgreens business and have not tried to sell any of them yet. I want to make sure I can stay consistent with my yields and quality but I can see how this can be very lucrative in certain areas. Compared to working in a hospital, this is extremely passive, seed and harvest day a week or so later are the only days you’re “busy” for a few hours. If you enjoy gardening and getting your hands in the dirt it’s not work at all. Like I said I haven’t even tried to sell mine yet and just lost my job I have no income at all right now but I’m just chillin. I can make this work and I’m enjoying the heck out of it! It’s very relaxing and nothing better than checking on your babies everyday. It’s really fun, so a lot of work depends on your definition of work. I’ve WORKED and just growing Microgreens is not a lot of work lol 😂

I never wanted to go to farmers markets & it did not interest me as much as I thought it would. So good luck. Too bad you don’t understand things but I no longer have an interest in Microgreens. And what I meant by hard work since you obviously don’t know anything about gardening, there’s a whole preparation process that has to happen before you can even get them ready to package, like germination & growing them properly before you can let others eat them. They’re done in 7-10 days & start over weekly. That’s a lot of work when you have other things going on! Not like you can let them go a couple of days without being checked on like other vegetables. RUclips, where everyone is an expert… if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. I have a 30 acre farm. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is easy or passive about it. I have a BSME degree in engineering automation and currently my 9-5 is a software engineer, so I know a thing or two about microcontrollers and automation. Nothing yet replaces the uniquely human experience of getting your hands dirty and working the land.
I will say I saw these and was like “okay imma try it” bought some supplieas and now (10 days later I have a tray of microgreens. I will say the growing part is easy but I could ABSOLUTELY see how selling and the logistics of growing many at once can be hard work. But if you are interested i would highly recommend buying some supplies and just try growing.
Exactly, I am 80% of the way to being ready to scale my 3 racks to around 8 racks, and it been a year, and i am flat out. Alot of the money goes back into ensuring you can be on time, and do less. But its great fun, not easy, not passive. I still have my full time job too. The ability to scale full time, delivering and fsrming fulltime is a while away.
Anything that has a short sales window, perishable, needs a dedicated sales outlet. A constant chore to do it. You'll put more time into sales than anything.
Yeah, its a grind. Simultaneously while building a hyper local food business growing exclusively on demand, frsh clean produce delivered to the door step, I needed get experience and income, i woke up in the morning, and went looking. I found market farmers that needed more to fulfil their demand, and i grew for him and others. A bigger guy in my town sold microgreens exclusively to restaurants and didnt have the room to keep up with his excess demand, So i did a deal, and grew for him, gave him a tour and he supplied everything and I made the lions share. Yeah, its not easy.

Maintaining microgreens is NOT hard work. It's incredibly easy. Even kids can do it. I've been doing it for almost a decade and have had all my kids start their OWN racks as well. They don't struggle at all. It's just a matter of keeping a schedule and having dedication and a sense of responsibility. I do agree many people want to chase easy money side gigs and such. My comment wasn't disputing that though.
I've worked jobs where I was pushed hard for 12 hours a day 5 days a week.... so the phrase "lots of work" is super variable. I was told the same when I started growing mushrooms commercially

@@Section_230 Easy is speculative. So don't act like a douche bag. I think it is a lot of work, to keep even 10 trays(10x20") going and sell them. There is a lot to it. daily watering. Plant 2-3 trays every 3 days or so. You have to take measures to keep everything very clean. It gets dirty quickly when you stack trays. with continuous grow, but can easily become problematic. You have to compost the soil or dispose of it somehow..... Sifting soil, soaking trays... All this is the simple quick stuff. Thank you. I’ve been in business for 1.5 years now, and there’s no easy way to do it. I’ve watched several growers come and go already. I’m one of the smallest, but already the highest rated in. The city, and number 2 in the state. You have to love it, and like you said- MARKET RESEARCH!

Yea it's not passive because you have to physically plant. Unless you create sowing & harvest machines or something you still have to presently grow even if you are selling out to vendors and marketplaces.
I saw the hype and checked them out. For health. Very worth it. If you're sick somehow, Incorporate this in to your meal. Every meal if possible. But not worth selling. It doesn't take a lot of thought to know the work and space this stuff needs to do its thing. Especially if ya played around with plants at all ever.
I breed and sell tropical fish for a living. I would like to try this. I’m used to cleaning and changing water on 50 aquariums, bagging and shipping fish. I think this would fit right in with what I do.

I do love growing them for me and my family since I live in an apartment and I don't have anywhere to grow outside. You can grow them year round. I love them and I can grow a lot of different ones.

Mumms seeds and Johnnys seeds are good seed suppliers. There are others too but those are good quality and good prices. It would take too long to grow your own seeds but it is possible if you have enough land.
Curious why you stopped growing micro greens? Are they profitable? To many ppl trying to sell courses on RUclips about growing micro greens. Would be nice for a video that’s an honest non biased take on the business

It Costs me $1.15 per 10x20 trays, whether you sell or not, it doesn't break the bank, people just need to stop advertising so hard otherwise the market will be driven too hard.

Growing plants is truly work it's a business that's a you gotta be there to make it make money unless it's for fun it's for you maybe trade with friends that's different.
At least grow them for yourself so that you know how to do it and you know how much work is involved in one tray of micro greens. It’s a whole lot of fun I think to see nature abundance in action. And they are super Duper healthy 40% more nutrition, then the adult plant.
I sold them to high end restaurants and at the farmers market. Retail at markets was the best- we would always sell out. I don’t sell them anymore though because it was a lot of labour and I had a produce and flower farm running at the same time which took more of my attention. 🌱🍅🌻
Your video left me with questions for you or any that's doing it done it . Where are you trying to do this commercially and is there anywhere in US or Canada you'd recommend trying and have you ever had a thick surplus with no outlet to sell them ? I'm pondering distributing them for free at a food bank or two with offer for them to subscribe or order them and provide email for feedback to see what is liked or disliked or what people want to buy . I figured I'm out of 60$ and a some time if it flops.
I am in Canada. Usually there wasn’t too much surplus because we grew what we knew we could sell at the market and everything else was grown to order. It’s not a bad idea you have but I’m not sure how much feedback you’d get- it’s worth a try though! Giving out samples to restaurants or friends will give you good feedback.
ur right it's about where you live and what connections you have going in. He probably had a line of sale and for him passive is passive if he was already in physical picking or farming of some kind. It's a walk in the park if you have a good computer program and a pipeline compared to say picking wine. Because when you pick wine in cali you have to pick it before fire season so it's so much more effort these days or some other picker type job.
He does videos showing him cold calling grocery stores. He never said marketing it was the easy part. Growing little plants to then sell to somebody, even if it's just your neighbors, is the easy part.

You'd have a chain of people or option who might do said job. but if you say were a "solo" worker 10,000 plot in the middle of nowhere with 1 road maybe that was dead for 4 months in the year because of snow. You;d have a lot less options.

“Passive income” aside….had his racks been full with grow trays, which they are not, he’d have to gross $62.50 per tray each week in order to reach $5k per month. That is simply UNREALISTIC. Especially when you consider very few, if any, crops are ready for harvest after 7days. At least not the high value crops. Add in the fact that his “buddies” vouch for him being in the oil fields three weeks out of the month…I call FRAUD.
I've been surprised, I've been interested in the idea for a long time but it's impossible to research microgreen growth without the guides mentioning a business side of it. What's curious to me is a comparison to other small space growing methods like hydroponics. it seems everyone in that space tailors to talking about growing food for yourself, whereas most people talking about microgreens seem to think of that audience as secondary
Bottom line people need to eat everyday to survive. The food industry is and always will be a money maker. These people making passive income were being real. Therfore it's possible to find and even duplicate their success. Just have to put in the work.
I manage 4 different weed strains.. 2-6 mushroom variants and 10+ herbs and micro greens.. her equivalent to work is very "subjective"... money grows on trees people, just give it 5% work and 95% attention cuz that's all u need with hydroponics 😂

Lolz. I set up a microgreens growery thinking it'd be easy in the palm desert area, several years later it's all feed for my chickens and everyone keeps telling me they can't believe how healthy and beautiful they look 😅
I didn’t notice any difference but I eat a lot of vegetables normally. They add colour and different flavours to meals- broccoli or pea sprouts on tacos was one of my favourites! Some of our customers did say the microgreens helped them with some diseases though
I’ve managed to make a system that only takes me like 30 mins to do my watering. This was all through automated systems. I recommend to other micro green companies like me to invest in an automatic system.

It is a lot of work and need a lot of money, especially if you don't have more space and need to grow the plants indoor. Think about the electrity bill, trays, lamps, water bills, etc.

I think it is a lot of work, to keep even 10 trays(10x20") going and sell them. There is a lot to it. daily watering. Plant 2-3 trays every 3 days or so. You have to take measures to keep everything very clean. It gets dirty quickly when you stack trays. with continuous grow, but can easily become problematic. You have to compost the soil or dispose of it somehow..... Sifting soil, soaking trays... All this is the simple quick stuff.
The time consuming part is harvesting, packaging, and distributing.

Yea it's not passive because you have to physically plant. Unless you create sowing & harvest machines or something you still have to presently grow even if you are selling out to vendors and marketplaces.

I breed and sell tropical fish for a living. I would like to try this. I’m used to cleaning and changing water on 50 aquariums, bagging and shipping fish. I think this would fit right in with what I do.
I agree with you, there is nothing passive about growing and selling micro greens, it is very hard work. I do love growing them for me and my family since I live in an apartment and I don't have anywhere to grow outside. You can grow them year round. I love them and I can grow a lot of different ones.

Where do you get all the seeds from also? Do you just buy them or do you grow your own crops till they produce seeds?
Mumms seeds and Johnnys seeds are good seed suppliers. There are others too but those are good quality and good prices. It would take too long to grow your own seeds but it is possible if you have enough land.
Curious why you stopped growing micro greens? Are they profitable? To many ppl trying to sell courses on RUclips about growing micro greens. Would be nice for a video that’s an honest non biased take on the business

💯 I do think it’s doable. But it takes serious work and commitment. I do think growing microgreens on a small scale is good for apartment dwellers to enjoy being able to grow greens and get in good nutrients!

It Costs me $1.15 per 10x20 trays, whether you sell or not, it doesn't break the bank, people just need to stop advertising so hard otherwise the market will be driven too hard.

You have to keep buying seeds as microgreens are so young when they’re harvested they never go to seed.

@@johnathansilva2823 If you have an outdoor garden you could for sure! It just takes land and time. Some plants don’t flower or seed until the second year of growing.
Growing plants is truly work it's a business that's a you gotta be there to make it make money unless it's for fun it's for you maybe trade with friends that's different.

I sold them to high end restaurants and at the farmers market. Retail at markets was the best- we would always sell out. I don’t sell them anymore though because it was a lot of labour and I had a produce and flower farm running at the same time which took more of my attention. 🌱🍅🌻
Your video left me with questions for you or any that's doing it done it . Where are you trying to do this commercially and is there anywhere in US or Canada you'd recommend trying and have you ever had a thick surplus with no outlet to sell them ? I'm pondering distributing them for free at a food bank or two with offer for them to subscribe or order them and provide email for feedback to see what is liked or disliked or what people want to buy . I figured I'm out of 60$ and a some time if it flops.
I am in Canada. Usually there wasn’t too much surplus because we grew what we knew we could sell at the market and everything else was grown to order. It’s not a bad idea you have but I’m not sure how much feedback you’d get- it’s worth a try though! Giving out samples to restaurants or friends will give you good feedback.
Definitely not passive! You are correct. It's easy to get exploited. Where I live their value is minimal. 25 miles away 10 - 20$ a pound.

It was my own business. I also grew flowers and vegetables so this was a branch of it. We had employees for the farm.
ur right it's about where you live and what connections you have going in. He probably had a line of sale and for him passive is passive if he was already in physical picking or farming of some kind. It's a walk in the park if you have a good computer program and a pipeline compared to say picking wine. Because when you pick wine in cali you have to pick it before fire season so it's so much more effort these days or some other picker type job.
He does videos showing him cold calling grocery stores. He never said marketing it was the easy part. Growing little plants to then sell to somebody, even if it's just your neighbors, is the easy part.
@@Section_230 line of sale means option of people to sell to. As in a place to dump protect not if he had the sale in hand. In abiz and you need a job done. You'd have a chain of people or option who might do said job. but if you say were a "solo" worker 10,000 plot in the middle of nowhere with 1 road maybe that was dead for 4 months in the year because of snow. You;d have a lot less options.

Its true, worked supplying microgreen and salads leaves. But return is alot and its a huge loss.

“Passive income” aside….had his racks been full with grow trays, which they are not, he’d have to gross $62.50 per tray each week in order to reach $5k per month. That is simply UNREALISTIC. Especially when you consider very few, if any, crops are ready for harvest after 7days. At least not the high value crops. Add in the fact that his “buddies” vouch for him being in the oil fields three weeks out of the month…I call FRAUD.
I've been surprised, I've been interested in the idea for a long time but it's impossible to research microgreen growth without the guides mentioning a business side of it. What's curious to me is a comparison to other small space growing methods like hydroponics. it seems everyone in that space tailors to talking about growing food for yourself, whereas most people talking about microgreens seem to think of that audience as secondary

I can see that micro greens are healthy, because you have one of the most beautifully symmetrical faces I’ve ever seen.
Bottom line people need to eat everyday to survive. The food industry is and always will be a money maker. These people making passive income were being real. Therfore it's possible to find and even duplicate their success. Just have to put in the work.

I didn’t notice any difference but I eat a lot of vegetables normally. They add colour and different flavours to meals- broccoli or pea sprouts on tacos was one of my favourites! Some of our customers did say the microgreens helped them with some diseases though

I’ve managed to make a system that only takes me like 30 mins to do my watering. This was all through automated systems. I recommend to other micro green companies like me to invest in an automatic system.

It is a lot of work and need a lot of money, especially if you don't have more space and need to grow the plants indoor. Think about the electrity bill, trays, lamps, water bills, etc.
As a plant collector who everyone said that plants hobby is a passive income. Nope 😂 If I'm doing repotting it took at least 6-8 hours
