I'm in an 80's cover band. Let me explain something to all the non musicians that shout "fake" and shit like that. The 80's had very talented musicians, not like the fake shit you are used to today. One song we do by Depeche Mode has no less than 14 different keyboard parts in it. In order to reproduce this song live, we had to build a backing track to play along with. A lot of these songs from this era were like that. Even the original bands have to cut some corners to bring to you discriminating listeners the songs like you want to hear them. It's a lot of work, not that you'd understand. So, in a nutshell, LIGHTEN THE FUCK UP. You think it's easy, try it sometime. Always easier to hurt than to heal. Easier to destroy than to create. But know what you're talking about before you open your cock holsters!

Hey Vox, I totally get it. If you don't know anything about how music is made then it's easy to be critical. And 80's music had lots of layers, synth-specific to be sure. So you either had 17 people on stage or you sequenced some shit. I love 80's music as much as anyone- I am a mildly competent musician so I know what goes into actually making a song happen.
As far as this video is concerned, the bass track sounds "live", or at least it is not the album version at all, but where is the bass player? Also, the drummer isn't doing shit. If I were him I'd be embarrased to pretend to be playing. Not sure why he was there or whom he was trying to convince. Rob Fisher is missing and it's a shame that he's gone but it looks like the two other guys are actually recreating his sounds live, so they've got than going for them. Cheers.

You are right Mattercat. I like your comment. I am a fan of this band and I love their songs but I'm not a deluded fan like some on these type of posts. At 6:40 the anchor guy says I swear to ya it sounded like we listening to a CD. That's because they were in effect. I'm a semi-professional guitarist, singer, drummer bass player and pianist. I use a DAW. It's digital of course. I used an analog reel to reel in my earlier years. I had my own band and played live for decades. The rhythm guitarist was playing, the singer was singing and probably playing his guitar and the keyboardist was playing. The guitarist was having a hard time playing on time with the track some times because it is hard to do perfectly because your playing with a machine. I don't enjoy playing with tracks except sometimes I do on my looper or my DAW to demonstrate a lead guitar solo. I don't have the same energy playing with a track and here the band doesn't have it's usual energy because you are confined to playing with a track. Their lack of energy is very noticeable. I guess that's the only economical way they could do it but I still don't like hearing it this way.

There's real bass in the original recording-- they used a studio musician. It's a tricky bass line to play by the way. Thomas Dolby, who has been a solo synthpop performer for decades, has also hired bassists for original studio recordings.

To go along with what The Vox said. The studio drums are the hardest to reproduce in a tv studio so I’m sure they went with a drum click track to keep the authenticity of the song. The rhythm track in their songs are all programmed tracks anyway.
