    The monkey still has much to learn it appears. 🙂. Flange washers are backwards and teflon tape is superfluous on this application. And the sink should be filled with hot water and drained to test for leaks.

    Hello, I'm 60+ years. Just watched your video. Good job. I'm doing my kitchen sink drain pipes. I noticed you put the slip joint washers for compression fittings in the wrong direction. The narrow bevel end goes away from nut. Also the washer on j-bend from wall doesn't go where you placed it. With the washer on that side the lip prevents the washer from sealing. The j-bend washer goes at outer edge of pipe against the lip. Then when tightened the washer is compressed and seals between the 2 ends of pipes. Again good job and a learning curve as you stated.

    Good video. FYI.... the teflon tape would not be serving any purpose in this application though. It is only for cases where the threads are part of the seal. In the P-trap it is those plastic washers being compressed that make the seal. Thanks for your videos.

    Those things that you keep referring to as "flanges" are really called "nuts". An actual flange is the decorative piece that is meant to cover up the wall and hopefully hide the sometimes large hole where the sink drain accesses the vent/drain stack in the wall. The word "flange" is often used interchangeably with "escutcheon".
    Also, I noticed that you installed the gaskets in the compression fittings backwards. Having the tapered end of the washer oriented toward the opening you're trying to close with the fitting is extremely important. So important, in fact, that I don't know how you didn't have a leak. Furthermore, with a compression fitting, using PTFE tape (as you did here) can prevent the gasket from compressing and making a proper seal. Where there are threaded nuts, you use PTFE tape to fill in the minuscule gaps between the threads of each fitting that exist as a result of the union of two different pieces that have threading that's not exactly identical, but they're close enough to identical to remain within the manufacturer's tolerances. Three layers of PTFE tape is usually enough to fill the gaps without making the pieces impossible to put together.
    I sincerely hope that nobody is using your video as the sole source of information for the installation of a P-trap, because it was just a result of luck or coincidence that your drain didn't leak.

    • @delifusio
      @delifusio 6 лет назад +3

      If you're doing instructional videos you should at least do them correctly. Or at the very least add a little correction bubble in your video so a bunch of people don't have leaks. You have an open cabinet so if anything leaks you'll probably see it, but a lot of people have vanities with doors. You'd be amazed how long a leak can go unnoticed and the amount of damage a tiny, consistent, amount of water can do.

    I really hate working with drains............ and plumber's tape is really a useful thing.......... Tamara, recently I had water leak problem in the flush water inlet connectors due to gaskets and some scratches on the surface where gasket meets the pipe............ So what I did which was very useful and worked like magic, that I dried and removed water from both end of the pipe and connector and then I applied Hot Glue with Glue gun and quickly tied both end and I let it cool for few minutes then I opened the valve and no leaks, it was so tight and perfectly sealed that I shaked the pipe and there was not a single drop.
    So if you do not find any Plumber's tape near you or miss a rubber washer, you can use the hot glue to seal the joints perfectly as well.

The pipe you inserted into the main drain on the left, (into the T fitting) it apeared to me that the pipe went way inside the T joint causing the flow from the top of the vertical pipe to be obstructed. Ideally that pipe shouldn't go past the point where the T starts. I think it went way more than hafway into the diameter of the vertical pipe. Replay the tape and watch carefully how much of that length went into the T.

    oh yeah, they are supposed to be easy to remove, except in my house ...mffu! I went to change mine, and it turns out whoever installed it used some sticky mud all over. I was able to remove the p-trap, but after using so much torque that the couplers lost their strength - you would not know by looking at the them, but they will not prevent leak. Trouble is with the extension that completes the p-strap, connecting to the pipe coming from the wall (joint you put teflon tape in this project). That one won't turn, and I cannot figure if it is even supposed to turn; it has no grip. I actually broke my plastic gripping wrench on it, something that I have used on all kinds of structures without failure. While the threads on that pipe are good, its coupling wont fit with any p-trap products that I will find in my hardware stores. The "small project" has turned to the project of the year for me. I hate to have to cut anything, but that might be the next consideration.

    First off. Buy a metal tubing cutter. Cut your waste arm shorter. Then buy a set of "channel Lock plyers". Never use a pipe wrench under a sink. LOOK at the slip washers. They only go on 1 way. NEVER use teflon tape on a p-trap. You could use a bit of pipe dope to help it slip a bit easier as you tighten it down.
    I'm really curious about who did your plastic drain lines. Does the vent line going upwards go to the roof or does it stop up under your sink. Completely wrong!!
    Who did your water lines?? Are they completely wrong also?

      It's used anywhere the "fit" of the male & femaile threads themselves are resulting in the "seal". Usually a pressurized situation.
      Your use is of course not a pressure fitting.
      I use it for my air compressor fittings, hydraulic fittings (the yellow teflon tape resists the effects of oils).
      There is also a teflon PASTE that you can apply to threads & it often works better, filling in voids that the tape misses.
      For what you did the white tape is a good choice.
      I enjoy your art projects that pop into view every so often, pretty home you have.
      Keep it up!

      @@1947froggy the tape or pipe dope is not made to fill in voids. It's made to reduce friction as you are tightening pipe threads together. You never use teflon tape on a p-trap.

    • @AK99581
      @AK99581 7 лет назад +1

      Stephanie Lynch That wrench is called a pipe wrench. As she demonstrates, it can be used for changing p traps and things like that...but it's mostly used for gripping and tightening round pipes, such as gas piping. I usually go for channellock pliers for jobs like this, but use whatever works best for you.

    • @eosjoe565
      @eosjoe565 7 лет назад +2

      They make a set of channel lock pliers called "water pump pliers" that have jaws which are more curved and allow them to better grip the round screw collars on these types of fittings. They also have less of a tendency to mar the finish compared to standard channel lock pliers. But, like you... most of us only have channel lock pliers available.

    • @ltsgarage7780

      @@MonkeysKnow it's not called a plumbers wrench. It's called a pipe wrench for a reason. The wrong wrench to use on slip nuts under a sink. Buy a set of channel lock. Or slip joint pliers!!!

      SpellDreams Some jurisdictions require a vent be added when you add an additional item that has a drain beyond what was already there when the home was built. Each vent stack can only "vent" so many drains, so if more waste is going to be drained than the existing vent stack(s) can handle, a "mini vent" can be installed to an individual drain in lieu of building an entire new vent stack. Or so I'm told.

    I don't get it. This is extremely poorly explained. What the hell is the tape? Screwing something in anyway. So why would it need to be taped? Then mentions putty? I didn't even see any of that. This gives good idea on how to do it. But doesn't explain what that means which is ready worrisome. Not doing anything until I find out what it is and how to properly use it.

    I wish I was more of a wise monkey. I clicked on this video because I caused a leak under the sink by yanking at my washing machine to try and fix _that_... It didn't occur to me that the water supply would be connected by a pipe and that it probably wasn't infinite in length.. Duh
