+Ultimate PlayStation If I'm not mistaken he switches to the Shield of Want (known in the english version) which increases the souls you gain, he does this after the boss fight since it takes time for the souls to register as obtained and by switching to the shield during this brief time frame increases the amount you gain overall. This tactic can be used with Medicant's Staff, Symbol of Avarice and Silver Covetous Ring (+) for great effect.
