This is my review of the Breville 4-Slice, model BTA840XL, after about 4 weeks of ownership (since Xmas 2017). I give it very high ratings and its price point is very good for the quality, performance and features. I and my wife's opinion. It seems to weigh more that all the other Breville toasters (7#'s), maybe because it has a true diecast metal base. So it seems substantial. Since I have been a computer systems engineer for 25+ years, I wanted a baseline of performance.
I visited about 1,000 websites, plus 50+ RUclips sites looking at 4 slice toasters. I was really interested in the $500 list price, (but $300 on-line) Whirlpool, and outwardly very similar to the Breville, with the count-down Led's. But their warranty was no better that any others, at the high price, so I could not find any other mitigation for value. Their on-line youtube videos could have done more to make the case for it. Most all my appliances are high end Whirlpool, but sell me harder on the toaster please.
I looked about 30+ brands and models, including both computer automated and old-fashioned relay logic (push it down, it toasts). DuaLit was very interesting, because it used to be so old school and was hand-made in the UK (see their videos). But for some reason their 4-slice old style design did not allow 2 separate heat settings or allow lowering 2 slices at a time. Their "new" design is computerized, but instead of being made in the UK, is now made in the Far-East (China?), probably by a manufacturer who assembles several brands on one mfg line.
Observing all the automated toasters, they appear to be running the same set of software, because all seem to have the same features; about 80% shared across products. Obvisously their "cases" are designed differently and the buttons are in different places, but the features functions are very similar. I thought the Breville had the best execution. I liked the little grilles that hold the toast vertically, and the "bit-more" button is cute and we do use it.
I have a Heat Measurement gun that will read up to 1,200 degs F. So I shot all four slice slots across the top and four points each running with the toaster slots empty. They were mostly all the same, at about 750-810 degrees F, so fairly even. I then tried the temps running with bread in the slots. That lowered the temps, but again most were the same. P.s., the exterior temperature of the case does not measure above 90 degs, while toasting four slices, so the outside is only "warm" to the touch, at full load.
I rate the performance in toasting as very high. I really like the Led's that count down, during toasting to inform you of the time remaining. I met my match on toasting capacity. I usually "double toast" to ensure the toast is very done, almost burned. Well, set the Breville on the highest setting, and the toast will be really done! In fact, it toast well enough, that I have lowered the length of toasting.
That's my take. Given the price point, it is well worth it, well made and is a very sturdy design. How long the software and chipset last, remains to be seen.

I've had this toaster about 4 years but didn't use it much till this year.
I Discovered something I think you will Enjoy.
I like Hot Dogs and even had the Cheap Little Hot Dog & Bun toaster.
But... BAGELS & HOT DOG BUNS are Toasted on ONE SIDE. Maybe Toaster can do Hot Dog buns to.
I Opened a Hot Dog Bun NOT SEPERATING THE HALVES.
PUT THEM INTO THE BAGEL SLOT LONG WAYS STILL ATTACHED.
SET TEMPERATURE LEVER BETWEEN 1 & 2 Closer to 2.
Hit BAGEL & TOAST BUTTON and waited about 45 Seconds till they were automatically done.
    IT WORKED!!!
I was so Happy. NOW TOASTED NOT BURN'T HOT DOG ROLLS.
    Easy Peasy NO WORK
So if your kids or yourself want a hot dog without firing up the grill and just using the MICROWAVE (DOG WRAPPED IN A PAPER TOWEL FOR 43 SECONDS) AND TOASTER THAT TOASTS IN ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME.
    YOU'RE. ALL. SET. YEAH!
& YOU CAN TOAST 4 ROLLS AT ONCE in the 4 BAGEL SLOTS.
    Have FUN.

Thanks for the review, I have several Breville items and they are all really great products. I am going to buy this toaster in black, I love how it doesn't require pushing the leaver down nor the toast literally flying out the toaster when it pops up. The lack of crumbs and noise will also be welcome. 🐸 Also it's designed in my home country Australia. Btw it's pronounced like Brev (like Bev) ille (like ill) Brev-ill Breville 🐶

Hello World,Just purchased a 4 slice London series toaster,I found the middle 2 slots toast fine the outside 2 slots only toast on the inside, outside of the toast comes out hardly warmed.I returned the toaster and got another, same problem, exchanged it again exactly the same problem,3 toasters out of 3,I'm now going to exchange it for some other toaster.I asked Sunbeam about this their product manager was surprised and said it was the best toaster they'd ever maid.If that's the case I think sunbeam need to seriously look at their quality control as they do have issues. I've had no problems with the service the retailer (Briscoes)hasn't batted an eyelid.Just thought people might want to know.(statically 1 in 10 people bother to return goods under warranty, god knows how many of these toasters are faulty).

Great review. I have same model and have liked it but now it only toasts on one side after three years of use. There does not appear to be any broken wires on the element so i am not sure what is the source of the problem, so another appliance for the trash bin which is quite annoying , its hard to do your part for the environment when household appliances cannot be fixed and have to be replaced with regularity.

    • @ronreeds9993

You can but I wouldn't as the rack compression might be too much trying to force together. It will stop the toaster. For that just get the breville oven, it will toast and cook all in one. Costs more but can do more, I will make a video on that next.

These sell for about $200 in the USA, it's obviously because of the servo motors for raising & lowering the toast and the LEDs and the microprocessor is apparently smart enough to know that if you toast back-to-back slices it doesn't need to run as long on the 2nd slice since the toaster is already warm (this is from the brevillege website video).

We bought a Dualit It was HORRID~!!!! There was nothing I could do with it would get it to actually toast the toast. It barely warmed the bread. So I took it back.
Then I got a Brevvile. That Same one you have there~!!> That Was just as horrible. I suffered with that dammed POS for like 3 years before it finally died the horrifying DEATH it DESERVED~!!!
The engineers ( AKA Worthless losers who don't understand engineering) at Breville designed it with limits on how hot the heat coils could get so they never actually get hot enough to do the job. I guess those pansies were afraid of fires.
I'll never own a brevvile again. Too much money for too much garbage.
