Fixing the World's MOST EVIL Car - Lotus T125 Exosphere

  • Casey Putsch and the Genius Garage students take the 2011 Lotus T125 Exosphere to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to see if their repairs and new parts have solved the car's problems. Casey speaks about how Cosworth and Pectel who make the engine and ECU will not return a single e-mail to him or any of the students which has made it impossible to connect the computer to the car to troubleshoot the problem as you normally would. Why is that the case? Maybe Formula 1 arrogance, maybe we aren't showering them with tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, lack of accountability, maybe they just suck? In any case, Casey and the students are not deterred and Casey believes the Lotus is still a good car.

The issue is that the car is technically a prototype and the documentation will be lost IF any documentation was carried out because the car will have changed regularly and had a specific team of engineers who worked on it, most of which will probably be dead now. The best bet is to find a lotus historian or find a lotus collector in ENGLAND. We have plenty of car museums scattered around the country who could possibly have info or a lead you can follow. Also cosworth is no longer cosworth and we're bought out by Mahle so it could be worth contacting them for help.

      You don't throttle a lotus.
You don't brake a lotus either.
You go into the ZEN MODE and do consistent laps, one after another.
You work at doing lap after lap after lap.
      Each time, consistently.
Over time you bring up your consistent lap times.
Unremarkable, consistent, time and time again, over and over, year after year.
      Don't accelerate.
      Don't brake.
      Consistent all over the lap.
      No intense acceleration!

I hate these kinds of problems, I had a trackday like this where I had random misfires and I thought it was the coil pack, turns out the actual problem was the fuel feed had a damaged fitting and was sucking air into the fuel feed at certain pressures/situations. It didn’t show in the log, apparently the air still counts as pressure. It was odd that it never leaked fuel, only sucked in air.
Cut the fitting out and replaced it with a piece of hose, I was so pissed.

You may want to talk to Holley and their ECU systems. Now the communication with the rest of car through the ECU may be an issue. Jared did a Ferrari for Wizard's Ferrari, so something similar might work. But you have direct data and I might not have a clue. Perhaps the ECU is overheating. I don't know if it is potted, but if the boards are accessible, you might want to look for a bad solder joint - after all, you have looked at coils, plugs and wires.

Do they have a more updated version which is compatible, usable with the T125 ?
Obviously Holley including their RacePak are major Corporate, thus not a good option for any custom ECU needed for this unique Lotus T125 Exoshpere, F1/Indy type open wheel vehicle.
Others have posted about MoTec, HalTech because of their possible personal experiences, but clearly lack the necessary knowledge, requirements, assessment.
My suggestion is perhaps to contact Anderson Dick, Luis at Fuel Tech to see if they would be interested in assisting with the necessary custom ECU development, perhaps partnership with "Genius Garage".
From their company videos, along with many other users, they seem to have what appears to be the most open people to a possible custom project as this.

I would imagine the guys at Cosworth now would know very little about the ECU and which lotus are you trying to talk to? Because the Lotus that made this are gone.
The ECU guys not getting back to you is messed up, but I imagine this is also a decades old unit that they stopped supporting because serial connections sucked in the 90s and now that USB is a thing it sucks worse because now you're emulating a serial connection.
Geek software, check your cables, connections, check your software (it could be way newer than the firmware in the ECU and be causing issues. If you are using a serial connection it could easily be a bad serial to USB adapter that doesn't work with Windows 7-10-11.
Best bet is to start a social media campaign, try to find the guys that ran these at the tracks for lotus at the time, or worked on parts and pieces.

well you are more or less telling us that you are running way to rich at 40%, or lean, but i will bet on rich with the info you provided both with text and video / sound. This video tells me that Lotus never intended to run this model of engine for this long, just get a LS crate engine or a BMW V engine that you can trust.

Accusations of racism towards the guy spending the last decade helping people of different races, creeds, and orientation. Got it. You forgot calling beer "German water" is racist to Germans and they are all alcoholics, Showing the cool "YAAASCAR hat" is offensive to the LGBTQ+ community, and my sexist mansplaining of what beer is to an African American. OR. OR. And hear me out..... We could be just having a great time and helping each other out and enjoying our differences together.

@@CaseyPutsch you do understand that "German water" by definition wouldn't be racist, right? Maybe xenophobic, sure. We'll give you that but it's funny that even your canned responses lack credibility. You can't play the victim and the villain at the same time, but you manage to keep entertaining less and less people every week... keep it up! Love watching this tailspin that started 20 years ago on ferrarichat!

    You don't understand lotus.
    You don't push lotus.
    Lotus 🪷 is just there.
It sits on the pond and it just seems great.
On the rave track, is unremarkable at every location.
    It won't be pushed.
    I doesn't like braking.
If you over rev it, it's going to quickly weather and die.
You have to be the most consistent at everywhere on the race track.
    You're not accelerating hard.
    You're not braking hard.
    You ARE zen-like.
You are the most boring business like racer when you drive a lotus 🪷 🙄
You must take a chill-out pill 💊 if you want to drive this ZEN racer.
    The NAME tells you something.
    It's not wrongly named.
YOU must go into the Calm Zen like mindset to be able to race this thing.
You're OVER THE TOP with this thing.
You've got to go right down to then do lap after lap after lap consistently and slowly you improve those consistent lap times ⏲️ 👍
