  • Manufacturer: Busch, Rathenow (Germany)
    Application: Civil
    Era: 1930s
    Magnification: 6x
    Objective Lens Size: 36mm
    Field of View: 11° - 190m at 1000m
Specifics: Shortly after WW1, the first wide-angle binoculars were mass-produced by Carl Zeiss. However, there were also other companies that were able to produce good wide-angle lenses. This also included the Busch company in Rathenow near Berlin. At the time of WW1, Busch released a model called HELLUX 6x36, which had a field of vision of 150m at 1000m (8.5°).
From 1931 to 1939, another version of the HELLUX 6x36 was produced, which had a field of view of 190m at 1000m. That was a very large field of vision for that time (and also for today). Only the DELTAR/EM 8x40 from Carl Zeiss with a field of view of 196m at 1000m and the STEPNAC 6x30 from Ross with 192m at 1000m were available on this scale. The famous SARD Mk.43 6x42 was not manufactured until later in the 1940s.
There are two types of the HELLUX 190m version. The version shown in this video is the later version, made from lighter material. The first type of the HELLUX 190m version, on the other hand, is made of heavy brass and looks a bit more like the early HELLUX version with the 150m field of view. Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to find a list of serial numbers for Busch binoculars that can be assigned to the production periods. I am grateful for all hints.
I tried to make a list of all the (real) wide-angle binoculars available. Here I have only listed binoculars that have at least a 6x magnification and a field of view of at least 9 degrees.

Центр четкий, но есть аберрации по краям. Для своего возраста неплохая картинка.

These are great binoculars from the 1930s, congratulations (both from a collectible and performance point of view). Born for hunting purposes and for itinerant twilight control of the territories. It is not difficult to understand how, due to its prerogatives, even if it was not coated, it was also reconverted into aerial reconnaissance and patrol flying. An update of the binoculars would be useful to be able to fully appreciate masking the prisms (sheet metal or black cardboard) and blackening the edges of the prisms and lenses. The objective prism is shaped so as not to affect the light cone of the eyepiece; if approximately centered for collimation it cuts the exit pupil, it must be positioned in the best possible way to avoid blackening the prism edge. Its specially designed opponent was the Sard with more pupil extraction and brightness but with more critical edges; the Busch was more successful for lightness and portability even if it was older. Thanks for your comparison on the landscape. Greetings

Thank you very much for the comment! I am always happy to receive valuable information about the binoculars. I have another copy of the Hellux that appears to be an earlier version. I hope I can make a video about it soon too. Best regards!

Can you recommend something, at least 20 years old, that would be Good for seeing hits on a 100yd and 500yd target, I've got a scout rifle that needs some tingering and I'd like somebody to watch my hits for me. Deer season is November so. I just want something with a little bit of character. It's just going to be used at a outdoor range. I don't understand. The obsession with new things. Anyway, I appreciate your time.

Учитывая почти столетний возраст... Буквально, то отличный бинокль.

Pity this type of binoculars is not being manufactured, which needs to be done big time. Nothing wrong with a 100 year old design, if it does the job effectively
