    Thanks for visiting! Fantastic narration, I love how you add information about the ecosystem and its various fishes. Great shot of the kelpfish. Similar ecosystem diving in Laguna Beach, but I need to get back out to Catalina - it is absolutely beautiful - and it was so fun to see it through your fresh eyes.     amazing footage. Catalina island is such a gem. Rarely, does underwater video do it justice. Even as someone who regularly dives there, I was sitting here in awe of how stunning this video is.

    Amazing shots! I was watching this while doing dishes and I had to stop because I was entranced by the kelp forest! Reminds me a bit of the waters off of Vancouver island, just more colourful! Can’t wait for the next video!

    I fell in love with the game Subnautica because of how beautiful they portray something “scary”. Your videos remind me of the beauty of the game in the best way for sure. Hopefully, one day I can do this myself. Thanks for sharing how beautiful our vast world is

I love Subnautica, and even before that game the idea of showing what is often perceived as “scary” to be beautiful and significant in its own environment is a huge goal of my work as a creator and biologist.     Nice. Im in OC and Thalassophobia (deep black water) has prevented me from doing this.
    So, interesting to see whats off the coast at home.
    (But i have no problem with the shallower reefs of Hawaii lolol)

      Oh yeah Thalassophobia is no joke - I put mine to the test recently and it was quite rough lol. Glad you can still find underwater spots to explore! I've made it to Hawaii once a while back, hoping to go again someday

    as someone who grew up in sacramento and spent my summers in the west port/ fort bragg area where my family still lives i gotta say.. you sir have BALLS getting in that water with the amount of great whites. i used to go abalone diving with my dad and the last time i did i was maybe 9. the reason i stopped was we were about 90 yards out on a rock outcropping, a 10 foot female came into the bay at abalone point near glass beach. ill never forget what the shape of that thing looked like in the dark water. my dad put me on top of the abalone tube and pushed me on a wave toward shore while he dove down to the bottom of the rock outcropping we were harvesting on. i havent been in the ocean past my hips since.

    I went diving off of Catalina a lot this year, so many good spots to check out if you go back, personal favorite was the Italian gardens site, super worth it

      @@spruce5113 Oh man that sound awesome! I would love to dive the entire island but was pretty limited with time/budget on this trip. I’d like to scuba next time too - apparently the giant sea bass were all at 70ft while we were out there which is a bit out of reach for me with my rig just free-diving

    Cannot express how much your content has helped to educate me, soothe my violent anxiety, and just generally inspire me. I have to ask, do you have any recommendations for content similar to yours? Or any you personally enjoy?
    It devastates me that in this day and age I am actively struggling to find more content that isn’t disrespectful, encouraging environmental harm via tourism, or is Ai generated nonsense. Your attitude and respect for the places you visit warms me, and I wish you the best on your next travels!

      Hi thank you so much for this kind comment! To be honest, I don't know a lot of other RUclipsrs that are doing specifically underwater AND wildlife focused content. I definitely recommend checking out some of the photography from my friends featured in some of my other videos! They're all amazing artists and conservationists!       @@melvinjuarez7359 That’s awesome! It can be very rewarding. It can also be a bit dangerous so I definitely recommend finding friends who’ll go with you and even taking an entry-level course if you are able to! You can improve pretty quickly!

    Dude amazing quality videos, felt like I was watching a nature documentary from discovery channel back in the day. I would love to see you get some coral reef action down here in southeast Florida. Lauderdale by the sea has some amazing shore diving just south of the pier, if your interested I can point you to some exact locations. Keep the top notch videos coming!

    Garibaldi have been protected since at least the early 70s

      From what I read it was recommended they be protected in 1971, but it wasn't actually passed as legislation until 1993. And it didn't have an impact until 1995. Took quite a while to overcome the aquarium trade

    Those areas are both Protected fishing zones, hence why the life was teaming. Next time hit the cove just to the left of the point you dove in Malibu. in my opinion its some of the best diving on the West coast.

    I love catalina island! I am actually hoping to go later this month and hopefully go scuba diving for the first time and do some fishing. Anything you'd recommend for people just getting into freediving/scuba diving? also how cold was the water?

      It's a beautiful spot! I definitely recommend checking out Catalina Divers Supply - they're a great shop with easy access to the water and plenty of good tips for you to have a great experience. Water was at peak temps while I was there at around 65F + but I think it usually ranges from 50-60F, so kinda chilly! Keep an eye out for giant sea bass - I missed them on my trip, but apparently they were hanging out in some deeper spots

      I was there at the peak seasonal temp so it was about 65F +. I think it's usually between 50-60F.

    I live in Oregon. How do you tolerate the water. It's freezing cold! Even in the warm months lol regardless Kelp forests are so fascinating thank you for this footage(have u ever seen a wolf eel?)

      @@benmcreynolds8581 Thank you! To be honest it was only a little colder than the springs are here in FL, but a 5mil thick wetsuit definitely helps! Diving the PNW is high on my list and one of my friends has some awesome photos of wolf eels from that area - I’d love to come film them at some point! The plan is to travel more throughout the US as the channel grows

    Northern CA does not have an urchin problem. They have a star fish probablm. For some reason a certain species of star fish was basically killed off. That's star fish kept the urchin in check. Without the starfish the urchin population exploded

      @@thisfool89 Yes! I think I mentioned very briefly that the urchin population boom was due to predators being overfished and succumbing to disease - i didn’t directly mention starfish, but that is one of their primary predators. All an unfortunate result of an out-of-balance ecosystem
