The audience is told how to react.
How were they meant to react? Laugh? Cheer? Cry? Sometimes it appropriate for people to just sit and listen. The audience did the same when Portia was on there talking about her Eating disorder & when Kevin Hart was talking about his past homophobic tweets recently. There was the time when a family was on there talking about how their son was bullied into suicide. Yes, the audience is normally laughing but sometimes other reactions are most appropriate.
If you think the no clapping feels awkward, then you watch too much TV. We don't clap after every sentence in real life when someone opens up to us. I found it refreshing.
no ones clapping because here she is on TV virtue signalling which isn't what the audience came for, which is something in itself considering the audience on Ellen are all sheep.
Especially when they aren't laughing every two seconds

Wow I’ve seen films of his but this is the first time I’ve seen him in an interview & I didn’t anticipate his intensity. He speaks with purpose & confidence, just much more raw than the majority of other celebrities I’ve seen speak. There’s nothing wrong with not being intense & raw, I wouldn’t even call it a choice so much as it is a character trait. Any public figure’s support of the LGBTQ+ rights movement is valuable. I do however believe people like him have a uniqueness about them, the tendency to draw one’s full attention.... giving them an ability to create a lot of momentum in the movements they stand with. The LGBTQ+ community needs people like that. Especially people who have a platform to speak on.
