As a person from Los Angeles, I can confirm that the developers have done a great job making their Venice Beach look a lot like the real Venice Beach -- from the alleys that hide between the unique storefronts, right down to the zombies that shamble along the boardwalk.

As someone who is watching the reviews for this game after finishing it once (also as Jacob, oh mum), I find yours as the most fair and accurate I’ve seen. The rest seem to all have had unrealistic expectations, overly critical of the game for not taking itself too seriously, while understating how the game is just fun.
You described the fun and the limitations of the game mostly as I experienced it, and I find trust in your reviews for it.
My only gripe with the game that I’d like to add is that the weapon limited inventory was annoying as it kept getting full from the half point of the game onwards. Yes they provide lockers for you to store the extra stuff at some workshop locations, but this didn’t solve it for me.

Looks like the annoying enemy scaling issue from part 1 is back.
The reason why enemies are damage sponges (like he mentioned) is because they scale constantly to the players level, and out level any weapons and weapon upgrades they get. Essentially the only reason to find them and upgrade is to stay just slightly ahead of the enemy scaling curve (mainly added health). Which IMO defeats the purpose of having enemy levels in the first place, and makes progression feel like running on a treadmill.

Dead island in some ways was better honestly. The parkour and weapon handling was great in dying light in my opinion but something that was lacking were the blueprints and firearm combat. There was more emphasis on melee combat in dying light but for some reason most of the blueprints just felt kind of bad. Even the rare blueprints to me didn’t seem to make much of a difference in zombie killing where as in dead island if you get the right blueprint then you’re just going to be steamrolling enemies. Given that there was more of an emphasis on melee combat it makes sense why firearms and firearm combat wasn’t exactly great in dying light but if they weren’t going to expand on blueprints they could have at least made it better.

@@michellepatino8733 the parkour is definitely a plus, but I always end up forgetting to use a lot of a games mechanics and just hoof it on the ground in straight aways. I DID really like the grapple hook though. Was super cheeky for falling from extreme heights then grapple the ground to save yourself!

I remember it was Painkiller which was the first game I played that had a Rage mode that built up the more enemies you killed, which turned you into a juggernaut of destruction. It was cool.

I think it’s a day one buy for me. Dead island is what got me into the zombie genre so I kind of feel obligated to buy it in a way but the gore looks great and I can’t wait to explore the zones.

For anyone wondering there is no ng+ like the original had. I know some people won’t care but I do. Some weapons and legendaries you can only get after the main story so you unlock them and then have no use for them. Kinda sucks since implementing ng+ shouldn’t have been hard to do.

How large are these districts? Are they the size of the maps in Dead Island 1? Are they more the size of something from Arkane Studios?

This all sounds amazing. Open world is a hassle nowadays. Most of them feel empty or are filled with so many unnecessary side quests. This seems like a great story driven game and I am so up for that. Thank you for the info.

You clearly don't play 'most' of them because that isn't true at all, definitely a small minority. And as must always be pointed out, you can choose NOT to do that stuff, the story driven game is still there. And no he specifically said there's barely any story here, that's not the draw.

I loved the dead island games played them with my friends and picked up both games together on a sale for $4.50 i can say this is a great refresher the graphics and being able to push around things and interact with the environment unlike the first game. Replaying the first games made me appreciate how much has really changed dead island 2 is a pretty cool modernization of the series the language clothes and even menus have slang or cultural influences its nice i bought the $90 version
