Fuel Filler Hose Repair

  • My Jeep developed the common problem that all 05-06 Wranglers have where a valve inside the fuel tank stops working and every time you fill it up with gas, fuel spews out of the filler tube just before the pump shuts off. The fix is to buy a GM filler hose with a small check valve built into it and cut the valve out and insert it into the bottom of the filler hose on the wrangler. I completed this repair today, but haven't taken the Jeep to the gas station to fill it up yet. Here's a look at what the valve looks like.

ReactCosmetics - My understanding is that the root problem is that there is a ball-in-cage type valve inside the fuel tank, right where the filler hose connects, that swells up over time. Basically the ball floats to the top of the cage and blocks the inlet where the hose connects as the fuel level rises to full. The ball-in-cage valve's sole purpose is to stop gas from spewing out of the tank when you fill it up (it doesn't prevent gas from leaking out in a roll over for example). The valve is non-serviceable so the only way to fix it is to replace the fuel tank. Dealer's quote this repair at $1300. The alternative is to install the GM check valve into the hose for about $17. The flapper style check valve comes inside of GM filler hose part number 15131046. I cut it out and inserted it into the Jeep filler hose and have never spilled another drop of fuel. An easy fix for a bad design.

Oh, and since Jeep never fixed this issue, if you end up getting a new fuel tank it will eventually develop this exact same problem again.

You cut this out of the GM hose?
How did the insertion go with the Jeep hose?
    Show me more.

I learned how to do this fix from reading a thread on JeepForum.com. You can find more info there. I did cut the valve out of the GM fuel filler hose, GM p/n 15131046. You can get the hose from GM Parts Direct for under $18. I lubed the outside of the flapper valve body with a small amount of Goop hand cleaner and then used a 7/8 deep socket to push the valve into the bottom of the Jeep fuel filler hose. I placed the valve into the bottom of the hose in the correct orientation, and then placed the socket inside the hose and slammed it down onto my workbench a few times to push the valve into the hose just beyond where the inlet for the fuel tank goes. Then I wiped out the inside of the hose and breathed through the hose to make sure the flapper was still working properly before installing it back into the Jeep.
The hardest part of the job was getting the hose out of the Jeep as the lower hose clamp was not positioned well to get a tool on it. I ended up removing the upper clamp on the hose first and then pulled the hose off of the fuel filler neck, then I was able to rotate the hose towards the rear of the jeep which provided better access to the lower hose clamp. Having an LJ instead of a TJ certainly gave me more room to work with back there. It was an easy job and should be a permanent fix for this Jeep design defect in the fuel tank. I elected to install the GM valve into my factory hose and not trim and simply install the GM hose because the GM hose is straight and the factory Jeep hose is bent nearly 90 degrees and I didn't want a kink to develop in the hose and cause problems down the road.
It's an easy fix so if you have a 2005 or 2006 Wrangler that spews gas out every time you fill it up, it's definitely worth it to do this repair.

LJ Dave Colorado I'll be doing this mod on another 2005 LJ in a few days and I'll try to film the entire process on that one.
