Gotta feel great for the Heels after last season. Those kids came back with one goal in mind and achieved it. Big ups to Gonzaga though. They are legit and were in it til the end. They silenced a lot of doubters and should be walking with their heads held high.
I mean yeah it makes it bearable for the guys still on the team. Marcus Paige and Bryce Johnson earned that win and if was stolen. I still feel bad for them
I loved so much about this season . Keep that same intensity , fellas. There’s so much more to play for down the road. Never forget, Tar Heel Nation is always beside you, never behind you! We all stand together! Tar Heel Nation! The Kings Of North Carolina College Basketball!
Still feel this is one of the most underrated title games ever. Very few times do we get the two best teams in the nation. Gonzaga was not only the best offensive team, but they were a top 5 defensive team. They dominated most metrics, which factors in SoS. But North Carolina was right behind them in those metrics with a coach with plenty of final 4 experience. Only two things were bad about this game. The refs were terrible, and the bad calls went both ways. It was if they wanted Zach Collins out of the game who was the most gifted player on the floor. The other was Nigel Williams-Goss, one of my all-time favorite college players reinjuring his ankle. He made so many clutch plays, but when he hurt his ankle, game over. Coach Few should have used him as a decoy, but the big game dominator insisted on taking the tough shots. I felt so bad for him when Meeks blocked his shot for the game winning score. Even if healthy, Nigel may have missed but he deserved a better chance. But all teams who win titles need to catch some breaks. Another reason this game was so important is that so much of what Gonzaga does is based on the Carolina System. When Few first landed the GU job, Roy and Wanda took him under his wing at Nike events. Few looked up to Roy so much.
1. Call Less Fouls 2. Zack Collins Fouling Out Really Crushed The Zags Man 3. Nigel Williams Goss Twisting His Ankle In The Final Minute Was The Nail In The Coffin.
It's not that the refs gave UNC the game, its just that they took over the game completely. They didn't let either team play their game, put both teams best players in foul trouble, and never let either team get in a rhythm because they were too scared they were going to get called for a foul. It's the championship game, let the players play for God's sake.
If both teams were allowed to play, considering the flow and the absolutely pathetic FT shooting of UNC, I believe the Heels take it by 10-15 points. It was absolute madness to see both teams in the bonus with 10 minutes left in the game.
Totally incorrect. The refs actually called the game correctly. I'm not saying that there weren't any ticky tack calls that night (cause EVERY game has at least a couple), but the emphasis ALL SEASON had been on calling games tighter to help CLEAN UP the physical play & ultimately lead to better flowing games. What you saw in the title game were the TWO BIGGEST TEAMS in college hoops, who both had good depth. Neither team backed down from each other. Rather, BOTH teams backed their opponents down on the block & posted up all night long (including multiple instances of both teams' Point Guards posting up). The "chopped up" flow of the game (& high number of FTs) isn't on the refs. Their responsibility is to call the fouls fairly and accurately as they see them - whether it's the first 5 minutes of a game or the last 5, or whether it's the first game of the season or the last game of the season. This was on the players - from BOTH teams. It wasn't necessarily "a pretty game", but it was still exciting & the better team won. Folks who don't understand this are usually of the "entitled sect" or they just have a general overall ignorance to officiating. Or both.
Got a YOU RULE for UNC since Bill Guthridge had one of the greatest lines ever: Being asked about being swept by Duke in 2000, Guthridge said "Duke beat us three times: they beat us in Chapel Hill, they beat us in Durham, and they beat us home from the NCAA Tournament".
Rick Pitino explained something I was unaware of. The NBA wanted to increase scoring to make the game more exciting. Their answer-call more fouls and open up driving to the basket. NCAA did the same thing. Not blaming the ref's as much knowing the directive from the NCAA was to call more fouls especially on drives to the basket.
I remember that year my Tar Heels went through the NCAA tournament. Whooped everybody and went on to win the national championship to be the best team in the country

UNC knew that NWG was going to take that shot. They also knew he was injured. Sometimes as a head coach you need to overrule your pleading senior point guard and do what is best for the team. NWG was simply too hurt. They should've thrown the ball to Mathews for a corner three or some other play to surprise Carolina. Nigel was in no condition to put up that shot.
@@topristownsend67 actually, Nova shoulda had back to back to back trophies. NCAA wouldn't let Omari Spellman play that year and he was the big man that we needed in 2017 that would've won it for Nova. Only reason why Nova lost that year because they didn't have a big man.
This was what a national title game should be. Two number one seeds, the best two teams in the nation. No matter what anyone says about Gonzaga's league, the performance metrics don't lie. This isn't thought of as a classic because of the choppy officiating and constant stoppages in play that caused it to stretch out for almost 3 hours; but from purely a competition standpoint it was. There aren't that many championship games that are separated by 1 point with 30 seconds to go. Two top-line programs who may not have played their best but both gave it their all.
That was one of the worst officiated games in the history of the tournament. The refs really wanted to be the star that night, and were calling every touch foul every other possession.
