When I first heard the voice as the documentary, I almost turned it off, but slowly it grew on me, and by the end had me in tears. I was born in 1970 but I have always admired this man Dean and followed his career. Right now I am sitting here watching Dean Martin Roasts. Might not have been, but the world seemed so much less complicated and so much happier.

I have been a fan of Dean Martin for decades, bought all his albums. His voice was just beautiful and I would listen to his music all the time. His movies were entertaining. We lost a great man and entertainer when Dean passed away but I feel he still has fans who enjoy his music and movies. God bless you Dean.

Dean Martins singing has captivated me for 40 years. My daughter studied music and singing at high school and she performed Everybody and two Doris Day song for her final exams. We used to go on road trips with a couple of my daughters close friends, and we would put his CD on and we would all sing the songs. It cemented Dean Martin in mine and her life. To us, Deans voice has a musicality and timbre that is unmatched even today. Its said that Dean shared Frank Sinatra's aversion to rehearsal, even when they were recording songs. Dean would turn up. The band would play through the song with him listening. Then he would recored the song in one take, perfect, grab his coat and thank everyone. He was that good.

This documentary of Dean Martin was heart-warming and an accurate account of his life. I'm an Ohio gal, and growing up heard the music of the guy from Steubenville, OH. I mourned the loss of his son, Dino, who was a star in his own right. Dean Martin left behind a beautiful family. Nobody is perfect, but I read somewhere that he didn't really get "soused" during the Dean Martin Show. Not saying he never drank, but glad to know that he was sober with his guests, just playing.

I'll never forget the time Dean (on his show) was joking around with some young singer, then belted out:
"It had to be you, my wife wouldn't do." I don't hear the song often, but when I do I can't help remembering those lines. He was great.

What a wonderful tribute. I remember going to what I later learned was a celebrity golf tournament. My Mother handed me a piece of paper and a pen and asked me to get "that man with the golf club" to sign it. It was Dean Martin- I was 6. He asked me my name and wrote, "Tina- you're cute." My Mom loved it.

They had a surprise guest, it was Dean. They hadn't talked to each other for twenty years, It brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you Teresa. I never knew this and my father knew Dean. IK grew up in Malibu, California around my father's buddies, James Coburn, Lee Marvin, Martin Sheen, Nick Nolte and others. My dad was called the grey fox on PCH and around Santa Monica, CA in the bars and night spots. He was married 5 times. Sadly. They stole my inheritance and the gorgeous home we had in Malibu. Poor dad. Lost everything to get laid. Sad man!!! Buried in Las Vegas at age 61. Cancer. He gave up during cancer treatments. Dean Martin was his favorite friend and entertainer. Thank god I found Jerry Skinner so I could find out more about dad's connections. He was a very quiet man. US Marine. Owner of a Meat Company in Las Vegas. Thank you all.

Many years ago, I saw Dino sitting at his favorite table at The Hamburger Hamlet, his favorite watering hole, just down the street from his own Dino's Lodge on Sunset Blvd. His eldest son, Dino Jr., had just perished in a jet fighter crash, and he looked so sad... I could tell he was hurting, trying to drown his pain with a Jack and Coke. I said hello, and he was very friendly. I could just feel the warmth and kindness of the man, even during this brief meeting. I couldn't help but think that the death of his beloved son really took the joy and meaning out of his life, and he died not long afterward. RIP, and thanks for the memories.

No one has come along since, who personifies that 'good time' image the way he did. You just wanted to know him and hang out with him.
That old saying, "They don't make them like that anymore", seems to be the case with Dean. I can just about bet there will never be another like him...

We put them in a special place in our hearts and keep them there forever. That way we can talk to them anytime we like. I truly believe they are with us. • @markilew250
      @markilew250 7 лет назад +9

So True! And I don't think he is recognized enough on the racial barriers he broke down. Everyone speaks of what all Sinatra done on racism, we he did but very few speak on Dean's. I think his TV show, Rat Pack member, films Mr. Rico and Toys In The Attic all help prove it. Plus his own children speak of Dean's love for Sammy, open to son Ricci's friendship with Wayne, and how protective and treated Alma and her daughter like family. His kids even treated them like family, they were living with them for nearly 25 years! No racist would do all of that, he didn't even have to but he wanted to.

PATRICIA CRABTREE You’re getting Dean confused with Jerry Lewis. Dean not only included all his surviving children in his Will, but also Dean Paul’s son (his grandson, who had only been 14 when his Dad had been so tragically killed), Jeannie, and even his third wife Catherine and her daughter Sasha (whom he had adopted, and even though that marriage had only lasted for 3 years and had ended some 20 years before Dean’s death). Also, according to Deana’s book, he had paid for his first wife Betty’s funeral when she had passed away because; “I did love her, and she gave me all you beautiful children.” It was Jerry Lewis who disinherited ALL of his first family, including his grandchildren, and left everything to his second wife and their adopted daughter. I feel that speaks volumes about the very different characters of these two men, and why their partnership ultimately couldn’t survive.

David Bryant Yes...it was always apple juice in his glass on his own show! He played the persona he had been...later...he never drank on his How...he was pretending to be drunk because he said that’s the way people seemed to like him. He would also stand up to Frank Sinatra & after only a couple drinks & go home, as he promised his second wife Jeanie that he would always be home to have dinner with the family. He also played golf early in the morning. So...he would never stay out late with Frank & Frank respected that.

Dino's drunk act was often just that, an act, because people naturally laugh at the antics of drunk people, that is, the ones who are NOT mean drunks! Dino had a first-row seat when it came to knowing what alcohol did to people (his first wife). But drinking is all part of the entertainment crowd, especially in Las Vegas. But smart entertainers are NOT going to get very far performing drunk. Frank Sinatra did NOT drink JD during his show, he drank hot tea with honey for his throat, now afterwards, that was a different story, they all drank a lot back then, but now, more people know what alcohol's adverse effects have on the body AND physical appearance! It doesn't stop some of them, but it does others.
I met both Dino once and Frank several times; they were both very genuine, generous and true gentlemen (when not around the paps!) and always gracious to those they worked with and their guests. Two remarkable entertainers.

We all only have so many hours
In a day. He was an entertainer.
It was much different back then. They worked hard cut him some slack. He did the Best he could with his career choice. He Blessed and entertained us All !!!!

As a 21st century teen, I definitely listen to modern music but I also enjoy vintage music.
Dean Martin is one of my fav vintage singers of all time. He sings so well and is so handsome.

A nice tribute. He was a great song stylist. He had a magic way with people that made them love him. But I get the impression he couldn't make the different parts of himself fit together in one life. He was the tragic clown from Pagliacci, laughing on the outside, crying on the inside. JASA

That was a good read. My father John Curtis Thomas was friends and knock around buddy during school in Steubenville. My dad had polio with leg braces. He, Dean Martin convinced my dad to throw away the braces. It was this that helped one leg to become normal while the other one was bad. My dad now just had to walk with a cane.

All of us who are Baby Boomers enjoy the same rich legacy because we were given the same gifts...Dean Martin was one of them.

I surely miss him as well as the rest of them. I sure wish Hollywood could bring back that style of entertainment . But with all the politics and crudeness there isn't any family entertainment anymore. I believe that ship has sailed and I was so blessed to have witnessed it and better for it. Thanks for all the good times memories and laughs. You were the best.

Agree the quality of dancing media movie music and television that was expressed through the Hollywood icons
was a privilege to witness, there were so many celebrities and musicians that contributed and impacted our history and lifestyles.
We took it for granted that they would live forever and when they passed away the quality of dancing media movies music and television evolved so much that the future generation became robots of reality TV and video games.
They are so self-absorbed with their mobile phones and social media status, that they have no relationship
with the past or understand the harmful effects social media can have on their health and self-esteem.
We can only be grateful that we have lived during this time period, and are living memories of historic events celebrities and musicians that we can recall instantly and relive the moments with like minded people like it was yesterday.
As long as you are alive you are a living record that can always commemorate the past.

Dean was by far a better act than Jerry Lewis. Jerry hung on Dean's coat tails. Was nothing after the breakup. Lewis was obnoxious & was paid for all those shows requesting contributions--no donations on Lewis' part.

I met Dino at his favorite watering hole in Hollywood in the sixties. No, it wasn't his place, Dino's Lodge, it was a little restaurant/bar on the strip, nothing fancy. After his son, Dino Jr. died in a jet fighter crash (he was in the Air National Guard), I noticed him sitting at his favorite table all alone, up front, and I could tell he was hurting. I said hello, and he looked up from his drink and managed a weak smile, but I could just see the pain in his face. It was although when his son died, the life just went out of him. He died not long afterward. More than anything else, I believe that when Dino Jr. died, a little bit of him died, too. RIP, Dean Martin, a really kind, sweet, and down to earth gentleman.

Jerry, you are so right. His children loved him. Ricky was my neighbor on the river in Woodland and when his father died, Ricky and Annie left their outdoor Christmas lights on year round in is memory. We were so sad to learn of Ricky's untimely passing. Wonderful memories and Ricky's passing prompted me to dig out the CD he made when his third little girl, Rio Dean was born, using some of Dean's hits and reworking the lyrics. Fun times.
