    There's been a disappointing amount of negative reaction to the very successful and significant Polaris Dawn EVA from uninformed sources. Thanks for countering this example with the truth, Laura.

      I think the space community shot themselves in the foot with the pre-mission hype about EVA and Space walks. This wasn't much more than sticking your arm out the car window and waving your arm.
      Realistically the suit's mobility looks very good and nowhere as cumbersome as NASA's.

    • @lauraforczyk
      @lauraforczyk  4 месяца назад +10

      I'm not entirely surprised by negativity, because people tend to gravitate toward it. Immediately after recording this video, a neighbor was like, "Why does this EVA matter? Billionaires don't belong in space!" and I'm glad he was willing to listen.

      @@lauraforczyk I don't buy into the billionaires in space story, it's got a political tint to it that forgets billionaires die just as fast as poor people. Isaacman has both the means and the desire to do this and standing in his shoes I'd do the same so long as it's not a Titan Submersible situation.
      I'm not negative about this, just that the hype was for more than what was delivered. We live in a world full of hype these days and SpaceX has been the exception when dealing with big picture projects. Starship's first integrated flight testwas amazing. Watching engines fail and yet it kept climbing was heart in mouth stuff but did the EVA have this emotional pull? Really, that could have been a cardboard cutout of Isaacman for the emotional connection most of us felt and the Zimmer Frame sums it up, can we call it a Geriatric EVA?

      @@stevecam724 It achieved the results, the suit performed well as no one died, proved you could move your limbs, and held up for the desired time in open space. I am really impressed it went as planned, the next EVA suit should be much better, lighter with more mobility. It proved you don't need your own spacecraft to leave the spaceship.

    In the worst case, is this a possible circumvention...? When the next private Crew Dragon mission reaches orbit, the crew temporarily declares independence from the US. Then, as a separate country that never signed the OST, they can do whatever they want until they return.

    While I see no problems with this mission, I DO see problems with government missions in space, such as weaponizing space, and claiming space for a certain country. Suppose some country decides that the moon is theirs, and decides to defend it against any other country going there? Back in 1967, President Lyndon Johnson said " “No national sovereignty rules in outer space. Those who venture there go as envoys of the entire human race.” Sadly that appears to be changing, and for the worse. Humans seem to take war with them wherever they go.

  • @acefighterpilot
    @acefighterpilot 4 месяца назад +4

    I think the second sentence of Article VI has to be read in the context of the first. Signatory governments are responsible for authorization and supervision to ensure non-state entities are complying with the OST. There is no international mechanism, for instance akin to ICAO, for such regulation. I think one could argue the Commercial Space Launch amendments that legalized space mining violates the OST.

    • @lauraforczyk
      @lauraforczyk  4 месяца назад +4

      You're right, a lot of people (mostly outside of the US) have argued that laws legalizing space mining violate the OST. Just goes to show how much interpretation goes into this.

    International law as a term is an intentional misnomer.
    Participation in them and continued adherence is entirely voluntary. One can quibble about the precise meaning of law, the idea that law is authoritative derives 100% from it being handed down by a legislative body which has coercive control over it's constituency..
    International law, being based entirely on mentally respected agreements, lacks that key feature.
    Activist types and organisations love blurring this quite distinct concept to givea breach of those agreements, the same moral and legal opprobrium of a breach of a national law
