  • Physiotherapy is able to make a significant difference to people's quality of life to help combat the side effects of Breast Cancer Treatment. Unfortunately, Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy, is still not a standard part of the referral pathway.
In this video I outline why I believe it is essential to get to at least one Physiotherapy session within the first 2-4 weeks following diagnosis.
When people do not access Physiotherapy early enough during Breast Cancer Treatment, they can be left unaware of side effects that can be treated. I outline my Top 4 reasons people should make one Physiotherapy appointment following a Breast Cancer Diagnosis:
    1. Shoulder Range of Motion
    2. Resolving Pains
    3. Lymphoedema Prevention
    4. Exercise Education
The 4 points listed are specific to Physiotherapy. And you don't know what you don't know. If you never get referred, any of the above topics may become a chronic issue. It's time that Physiotherapy becomes standard as part of early Breast Cancer Care.

Thanks Jen. The best advice I received from my surgeon before I started any treatment was to see you. This video provides such good advice.

Hi Michelle, do you mean you are dealing with restricted range of movement yourself after radiation? Anything I can help you with? Jen

I am being told that I will not be referred to pt unless I am having problems this is from my oncologist surgeon nurse navigator
I am meeting with my oncologist on April the 8th and plan on having conversation with him about any ideas on how to explain how important this is to me
Their web site even says how important it is so I can’t figure out what is going on

I was talking to a friend yesterday about the fact that after a mastectomy I was sent a letter from the hospital offering an appointment to go and get a prosthesis fitted (purely cosmetic, and I'm opting to stay flat anyway), but trying to get a physio appointment is hard work. The priorities are all wrong! (That's in the UK)

Hi Debbie, that is interesting. I suspect for some women a prosthesis would be a high priority, but in a way that only covers one aspect, whereas Physiotherapy is going to assess and treat a lot more issues. I would also say both are important, and one is more important to different people. Thank you for commenting, really appreciate it. Jen x
