This is what a mole looks like if you have a fear of moles. I really like the rhyming designs, and the fact some of these spirits exist in the grey. Whenever there's an attempt to categorize something, there will always be fringe cases and the fact the hunters guild has this built in makes the world building feel familiar and grounded. If it's anything like categorizing the taxonomy of mundane beasts there are definitely petty debates about what type of spirit the Bogart is, and whether there should be a new category introduced just to settle a 3 decades long argument between two renowned archivist type guild members.
I like to imagine feng shui would be more prevalent in artherome's education system as one more means of appeasing brownies and saving the populace from... needless petty conflicts with spirits. Again, love the video! Keep up the great work!
20:00 oh no, not the sick one liners 😨🤣 imagine this thing putting on its knuckle dusters and roasting you with the hardest "your mama-disses" you heard since high school very cool designs, love your style
LOVE the wrecker boggart, i think its neck and physic look great though, the long neck and arms lend to the weasel mischievousness of it but still make it look big and imposing. a creature doesn't need a bunch of muscle to look strong, look at creatures like siren head or wendigos, their all thin skeletons yet their strength is never questioned. also love the feeler beard of the wrecker boggart, such a cool design choice.
Love the idea of a transformed Brownie, I almost imagine it's like a small weasely hulk mode! Wake up and find this horrible four foot weasel in your house, and you've just got to be like "Shiit, I love what you've done with the place man! Yeah, no I hated that photo of my beloved grandmother too. Oh you threw the cat in the lake? No you're right to do that, it's only the middle of winter, and she needed a wash anyway.. Were the torn curtains your idea?" it's just such a great image, I won't lie I'd be terrified to live in this world only because I have the amazing ability to lose things I'm literally holding, my home would be a brownie sanctuary 😭 I was wondering though, in terms of their actual "biology" (or the spirit equivelant), is there actually a hard line between the Brownie and Boggart, or is that a line drawn for the sake of research? Like, is it that the more frustrated a Brownie gets they may begin to exhibit Boggart features? Or they just have a breakdown and the transformation happens quite quickly? Also, have you considered having some spirits be less animal-like? The werewolf has a thematic reason to appear corpse-like, and of course Brownies appear friendly and cute, but if you're worried about differentiating some of these spirits, maybe have some of them be more like constructs? Maybe living idols of some kind, or creatures made of bundled cloth? Maybe looking into the history of Ents and the Green Man would be a great start for a creature, maybe you could have a unique spin on that? Awesome stuff as always, really inspiring!
@@BlueBotBlues thank you for the lovely comment, as always. And yes, I’m glad the story of a boggart appealed. They’re mostly goofy creatures and while they can certainly vandalise stuff, they aren’t so terrible as to present any real danger or threat. In terms of the transformation. When a brownie gets angry they will exhibit more pronounced features, however the transformation from a brownie in a boggart is a very extreme and sudden change. It’s also not that common, as most brownies just default to swearing a bunch when they get upset. And yeah, my plan is start doing some more overtly ethereal feeling creatures with more of a ghostly appearance 😊
I think understand what you mean about not wanting to get too close to the werewolves’ design but I’m kinda obsessed with the silhouette of the one with the very very long snout. It’s really good!
My favourite design so far, together with their “calmer” counterparts! Especially the characters: the vandal looks like a malicious pest, definitely feeling the weasel vibe, while the wrecker look more rough than outright vile, albeit definitely destructive
Interesting takes on both Brownies and Boggarts that feel unique, but also respectful of their original legend. I also like the addition of the Hunters Guild enforcing laws to not bother certain spirits. Worldbuilding like that is just very very interesting to me.
@@insectostrich4407 thank you. Glad you like it. The trouble the hunters guild have is trying to communicate this law to broad demographics of people dispersed across an empire between many seperate provinces. The law is there but it’s tricky to keep people updated and in the loop.
@ Yeah, that makes sense. I also love how some people in your world can actually utilise the rules of the world to their advantage. Like, conjuring a Werewolf to fight in battle by destroying the ecosystem. I’m a real sucker for unstable spirits or monsters being used for warfare in stories like this..
I've connected the names of Bogarts and Brownies too, I'm glad you made it a proper connection, and the two are my favorite creatures that you've made! Also, your take on redcaps would be interesting to see!
LOVEEE LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO LOVE YOUR DESIGNS SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.4 MILLION MILES OF CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD "LOVE" WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTRAM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE-ONE BILLIONTH OF THE LOVE I FEEL FOR YOUR DESIGNS. FOR YOU, LOVE. LOVE.
I honestly love your videos so much. There's something unbelievably satisfying to me about seeing a monster or creature re-designed through a new lens. With that being said, I'd absolutely love to get your take on Kobolds. I think you could give them a very interesting re-design.
I really liked the worldbuilding in this one! I like the way they're connected to the brownie, connecting ethereal spirits in this way is quite fun :] The boggarts do look quite intimidating (especially the wrecker boggart) but also equally as charming to me
I had an idea while watching videos about spirits in that world: they look like a crooked mirror of the thing they consider their enemy. Leans on a theme of "balance" kinda. Lesser vampire for example is a clumsy leech that reflects not a human host, but their addiction or bad habit. They show how addiction could suck the joy out of life. Greater vampire on the other hand is a mirror to a bad ruler who sucks everything out of their people. So - a regal leech. Werewolves are like that too: lesser one is a reflection of an animal 'cause they fight invasive species. Greater one is humanoid 'cause only humans hunt wantonly (mostly). I have some difficulties dragging boggart's design into this worldview. Maybe lesser boggart looks more unkempt and chaotic to reflect a mess that they fight by manipulating humans to finally clean their house while exaggerating its effects. They're also very stealthy to reflect how messy and uncategorized surroundings can subtly decrease quality of living. Antisocial aspect also shows that usually humans are not inclined to invite their friends to a wreck of a home. Greater (or wrecker) boggart is a one man demolition crew intent on obliterating terrible person's safe space: literally by destroying walls and doors while invading and figuratively by being the danger in their home. So they reflect how their evil prey destroys livelihood of others. Almost certainly wasn't intended by the author, but was a fun exercise in finding hidden meanings in these designs. P.S. Also neat that lesser spirits fight natural (or kinda natural) phenomena while greater spirits specialize on humans and their society.
I really like this concept of a peaceful and helpful being turning into a petty and spiteful one because of someone’s neglect of their household. It kind of makes me think of mental illnesses, where things get worse if you let yourself go, when you neglect yourself and your living space. Would a Brownie still turn into a Boggart if the homeowner was ill, either physically or mentally, and had difficulties in taking care of their home ? Or would the Brownie deem the person in need of genuine help ? Could there be another, even more version of Brownies in this situation, another transformation that is the opposite of Boggarts ? I was also wondering. What if, upon discovering that their house hosts a Boggart, or maybe being unaware of it, or not caring, the homeowner moved houses ? Would the creature stay in the house, or would it follow the homeowner ? If it stays in the house and gets new, good homeowners, would it stay a Boggart, or would it be possible for it to reverse into a Brownie and start again ? If it leaves, would it be replaced by a new Brownie ? I really like how you make your designs - it might be a cliché question, but where do you get your inspiration from ? I’m also fond of the way each creature shows both sides of humans, the good sides and the bad ones, and the consequences of the behaviours that come from these sides. It’s fascinating. Humans are part of an ecosystem and have an influence on their environment, either positive or negative, and all these creatures share this environment, or come to share it and react to this influence. It’s amazing ! See you in another video, friend, and may inspiration never leave you !
Ya know rath from ben 10? That's what i immediately thought of when I heard the lore of the second boggart. look up some clips of rath it fits so well and will be how I imagine them.
a design note. The vandal's jaw is low slung and long, with the eyes closer to the end of the snout than the hinge of the jaw. that fact is normally only seen on creatures that open their jaws particularly wide. The vandal strikes me as a creature, at least from a biological trait analysis, that might eat the home owner if it is antagonized. meanwhile, the wrecker boggart feels equally predatory, but in a differently way. like it couldn't decide whether it wanted to to fight back in self defense or hunt down the homeowner and disembowel them. The thin lanky design of the wrecker is a wonderful contrast from the brownie, in that it feels fast, agile, and with a vaguely draconic head, it's rage is easily telegraphed. Still looking forward to the rest of your videos, and your interpretation of dragons, if your world has them at all.
