    Having been born and raised in The Bronx, the MTA has been that love/hate partner that I can never do without. Growing up along the Lexington Avenue #6 line, this article amuses me. Native New Yorkers over 30 will tell you the tricks of the trade. Like how each end of a subway station has a lightbulb with a blue cover to let train operators know they're about to approach or depart a station. Or how you always pick the subway car nearest to your staircase leading to a transfer point or station exit. Ride the system enough times, and navigating it becomes second nature. By the way, the 125th Street subway station on the 4/5/6 line has had this same wait/miss scenario for decades!🇵🇷🇺🇸🤣

    If you're by the front of the train, check the signals. When one of them turns green run for that train! If not, check the yellow holding lights above the train. If they turn off, the train is leaving! Run for that train! (At terminal stations they will be off, and they turn on when the train is about to leave. But those stations usually have signs telling you which train is leaving first.) At any station, if you're at the middle of the train and it's about to leave, run for the front half, because the back half closes first!

      Kilo Byte That’s true, until you realise why some nyc subway stations are still under construction. Simply put, it makes it hard for construction workers to do their necessary jobs. Countries like Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul & Hong Kong ensure that construction works have time to do construction. That is why 24/7 is not really the best thing for NYC right now. Look at Chambers Street.

      @@shadowmamba95 except that the roads don't always follow the Subway lines and trying to follow with a bus adds time to the commute. Not to mention, a single 40' bus will never be able to replace a 60-75' subway car, especially when each train is 10 cars long.

    They're not trying to guess which leave first. They're trying to get on the express train if it pulls up. Otherwise they'll just take the local in the meantime since waiting would take longer.

  • @collinparsons3363
    @collinparsons3363 7 лет назад +8

    Just north of 34th Street Herald Square, there are switches to allow trains to cross between the local and express tracks. When this was taken, the Q went to Astoria on weekdays, and it would switch from the express to the local track north there, stop at 49th Street and 57th Street 7th, before turning under 59th Street. N and R trains were local and would come in and leave on the local track. Due to the way the scheduling worked, trains wouldn't always depart in the same order that they arrived, so people going to stations where it didn't matter which train to take would try to get on the first one to depart.
    Since the Q goes to Second Avenue, the N is now express and the W is back. The R and W are always on the local track, the N switches to the local track after 34th Street, while the Q stays on the express track to 57th Street and then goes under 63rd Street and up Second Ave. Until they get rid of this merge, this problem will still exist.
    Something similar probably also happens at Canal Street going southbound on the A/C. The C switches onto the same track as the A in that location to make the crossing into Brooklyn. If going to any stop between Chambers Street and Hoyt Schermerhorn Street, local or express doesn't matter, since both trains make the same stops, so you'd just take the first one that comes.

  • @CaseysTrains

    The W train should kinda solve this problem when it goes back into service. 34th Street has that wait because the Q train merges to the local track when it goes to Astoria. Since its being rerouted to the Second Ave Subway, the W train is coming back to replace it and it will run on the local tracks while the Q stays on the express tracks and end their runs at 57th St until December then 96th Street after.

    This always happens at that exact station and not just in the mornings. It might also happen elsewhere in the system but never noticed myself. I see comments about leaving early from home or taking the express. It has nothing to do with that. This waiting always happens at 34 street on either the local or express. There might be reasons unknown to me but I think it has to do with the fact that during specific times (if not, most of the time) throughout a day, the Q trains have to switch to the local track to serve the 49 Street stop which causes the wait.

    You should also go to 34th and 8th Ave... where the local and express trains are on platforms that are connected only by staircases. I spend many years trying to guess if the local would arrive first or the express. And if I guessed wrong, I would make a mad dash down the flight of stairs and then back up the flight to the other platform. All this because - especially late at night - missing the uptown train on the "other side" could mean a long wait for one to arrive on "my side".

    I know it's 4 years late, but with the Q now running to 2nd Ave/96th St, we should really consider switching the destinations of the N and R trains north of 57th St. How would this work? First, grade-separate the junctions at 57th St/7th Ave and Canal St, allowing the N/Q to be operationally independent from the R/W, as soon as the N is rerouted to run alongside the Q and F trains. This will mean that the N train will run on the local tracks of the QBL to Forest Hills/71st Ave. However, in order for the R train to be able to run to Astoria-Ditmars, there must be a railyard constructed. The best place for one is north of Ditmars Blvd station. This might require the extension of the tail tracks at Ditmars, so in planning such a project, provisions must be made to allow the R/W to be extended to LaGuardia Airport (we never know if the NIMBY opposition there will dry up, until it does so).
    Doing all of this will make the Broadway line far more efficient than it is now. Considering the increasing number of riders on the Second Avenue Subway, we owe it to ourselves to make the Q and the other Broadway services as efficient as possible.

      Do you understand New York City? I apologize if you live in NYC, but this is solving a problem by creating a problem. Yes, I will admit, it will shrink delays on the BMT Broadway Line, but you create 3 problems. First off, delays at Lexington Avenue - 63rd Street due to the (N) switching between the (Q) and (F) tracks just west of the station. Second, delays at Jackson Heights - Roosevelt Avenue for the (F) and 36th Street - Northern Boulevard for the (N) because the (N) switches between the (F) and the (M) (R) tracks just west of the 36th Street station. Finally, there will be no weekend connection between Queens Plaza and the rest of the IND Queens Boulevard Local Line, the biggest concern of them all.

      HostilePancakes, the One and Only In the time my last comment here was posted, there could be a supplement plan to the R reroute to Astoria.
      Under this new plan, a tunnel linking the Broadway Line and the Fulton Line would be built. From here, the R would be rerouted from 4th Avenue to the Fulton Street Local tracks to replace C service, allowing for increased capacity and better access. The C would be express to Lefferts Blvd, replacing A service. R service will now be based out of the existing Pitkin Yard. To replace R service on Queens Blvd will require changes to the lines services. Here, a new K train overlay of the E would be implemented, via Queens Blvd Local. M service will be rerouted via 63rd Street. This would improve service.

    • @TheRailLeaguer

      British Enough Actually, the most ideal solution is to remove Broadway Line service from Queens Blvd entirely. IND Service would be restructured to replace R service.

    What most people don't know is that express moves slower than local. You can see for yourself. Ride a local next to express and you bypass it extremely quick. Near Elmhurst the R is significantly faster than the e, and express gets delays more often from the malfunctions of constant travel over long distances. The stops the express makes knows that people could wait since express trains stack like in Roosevelt avenue the e and f stop there on express so the trains could be belt up as for local there is less since they move faster with constant stops so less is needed and it gives the trains in front time to move. I would recommend testing it first yourself or looking to check for express delays. Nyc subway now makes it hard for me to get to school with constant express and local delays, so I had countless latenesses. I would just take a taxi if there were a student card for that too

    This particular quirk can be remedied, but it will require construction of a new yard to the north of Astoria-Ditmars Blvd station.
    Now that the Q goes to Second/96th, there is the capacity to completely separate the Broadway expresses and locals within Manhattan and Queens. To do so, the N and R need to be switched north of Seventh/57th. Again, this will require the construction of a new rail yard for the R train north of Astoria-Ditmars. If the new portion of the viaduct is built to allow a future extension to LaGuardia Airport, that will save money in the long run. There is some underutilized industrial land on the bank of the Inner Long Island Sound that could house a railyard. Once that is completed, only signage changes would be required to seamlessly transition to running Forest Hills N trains and Astoria-Ditmars R trains -- there's a connection between the F tracks and the Q tracks east of Lexington/63rd that could carry N trains to the Queens Blvd Line.

      Jacob Mienser Exactly. A better solution is to deinterline the Broadway Line, with all Express trains to the Second Avenue Subway and all local trains to the 60th Street Tunnel. Using the existing track infrastructure in Queens, half of the trains would travel to Astoria and half of the trains to the Queens Blvd Line to Forest Hills. This eliminates the merge at 34th Street.

I would anticipate riding on either M or R trains when I arrive in Roosevelt-Av Jackson Heights, because all express trains stop there, and I would run out of M or R see if the other train across the platform is an E or F, when I figure it's the right train, I rush to the other side of the platform and board. Sometimes I need the F train but it's delayed and only E's are coming, so I'm a bit worried that it might take me longer just to wait for an express; I don't want to be left behind by the M or R trains that I just boarded.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 4 года назад

      ruzzell907 Just stay on the M and R train all the way to Queens Plaza and you will get there quicker than the E express. Those express trains suffer from crowding that makes the local be fast.

      Challenger Boy They have to maintain space between the trains.
      In addition, it’s 10 minutes due to the needless interlining of the system. Let’s assume that the existing signal system tops off train capacity at 24 trains per hour. If the Broadway were deinterlined, with all 24 trains to the Second Avenue Subway, and all 24 trains to the 60th Street Tunnel, with (using the existing track infrastructure in Queens), 12 trains to Astoria and 12 trains to Forest Hills, then service would come every 2.5-5 minutes, depending on where you are.

    • @GIJew
      @GIJew 6 лет назад

      The 7 express is really just for crowd control, it isn't really about cutting time. Sure, you might make it to Flushing 3-4 minutes earlier on an express, but it only feels longer on a local because of all the stops it has to make. All the people who live along the local stops combined will usually be equal to the number of people who get off at express stops, rather than having every train that passes by at 42st get filled to the brim.
      If you're in a hurry, you will probably get to your destination later by waiting for a 7 express. Just take whatever comes first.

      I can tell you that many of us natives will gladly shell out 3-4 minutes in hopes of getting a newer train. Yes, those R32s are among one of the most uncomfortable/smelly rides you'll ever come to experience. Of course if you're in a rush you don't care, but if I have an extra 10 minutes I'd gladly wait a little bit for an R160.

      This is just an exception where a train has to merge onto the track of another train just outside of a station, causing the wait.
      The (Q) switches onto the local track to serve 49th Street and the BMT Astoria Line. However, (N) and (R) trains are using the same track between 57th Street and Canal Street. This causes the wait at 34th Street - Herald Square because the switch between the 2 tracks just so happens to be 1 block north of the station in the dark tunnels.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
