Basement insulation is a code requirement although it isn't enforced as much as it should be. The basement has taken on a new life as a highly desired conditioned space. Basements can be gyms, recreation rooms, and playrooms for the kids, among many other single- and multi-use spaces. Although basements are often thought of as “cheap space," we still need to make sure we get the science right to ensure we have many years of long life, health, and comfort there.

Careful with the spray foam. They recommend 2 inches to avoid condensation but what the insulators don't tell you is that it's a "nominal" 2 inches meaning average.

Really really nice job on the architecture. I'm impressed. I had no idea we had gwp 1 spray foam available in the market. That basically solves the environmental issues. That wiring is a joke though. You absolutely can not have any wiring within 1.25" of the wall plane and that strapping assume it's only 0.75". Any inspector who passes that wiring is a fake. Is there anyone else making low gwp spray foam? I write military specs and we can't sole source any particular product, generally speaking.
It is not a NEC violation but is subject to local AHJ interpretation. Strapping is a very New England practice.

Steve, is there an advantage to using the blown rockwool vs rockwool batts?
Love your videos - the diagrams are helpful! Is there no point in foundation wall exterior insulation for thermal or is it just to protect the walls from the backfill? I'm curious if dimple mat/arroyo is all that is necessary over the water barrier or if you need rigid foam or mineral wool for some sort of thermal protection outside the walls.
why not insulate on the outside of the foundation ?
Can "Big Red" upgrade to a red pencil? I am super weird and styrofoam is equivalent to "finger nails on a chalk board". Felt tip markers are too close for me. I love the content enough that I will fund my eccentricities with a 100 pack of red pencils if you are game?
Any vapor retarder inside the blown Rockwool before sheetrock?
No, I don't think there would be because closed cell foam was used against the wall and that does not allow drying to the outside. So you have to dry to inside.
wouldnt icf of made more sense in this case? You practically made icf, insulation drain board on one side and closed cell on the other. Concrete in the middle...
If you didn't see it, one of the current builds BSN is covering did a basement foundation using Perfect Block, an ICCF Insulated Concrete Composite Form, it uses 30% of the concrete of a regular poured wall. As with most building material decisions it comes down to budget and contractor preference.
@@bwillan oh for sure and I did. I'm not crazy into the ICCF but it made sense it their case. I am a big proponent of ICF.
@@av1204 ICCF has the good benefit of insect resistance and the 4 hour burn rating is awesome.
