    Fred Thompson , thank you for input. Good to see your comments, my friend, from our time growing up in Groton. Many changes i notice each time i return to visit family. Memories especialy of my favorite place, Eastern Point Beach, from 1945 when my parents moved from MA until 1985 when i moved away. Now been in Mobile, AL area for 32 years. Groton was a great place to grow up. When I`m back I always take a drive around, like this video, but I stop and take photos. Thanks for your video, *** Sandra Collins Mashner

    Frederick Thompson Hello, Tom - Thanks so much for this video on your trek though the environs of Groton, Connecticut. It stirred up so many memories. I appreciate that you cannot possibly cover all areas or points of interest, but am grateful for this video and look forward to more. I grew up in the Borough of Groton from the mid-thirties until I left in the mid sixties to pursue other adventures. Strange to see so many changes, yet gratified to see that some areas don't seem to have changed at all except to maintain or improve homes or facilities. I'd like to add to your narrative if I may if you decide to take a return trip. I spent a great deal of time in the Eastern Point area. So I thought I'd share some of the earlier history. I hope you won't mind. As you drove through the now UConn Campus off Shennecossett Road, I was reminded that at one time it was the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center which was formerly the Plant Estate, a private home on a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. On the campus/estate there is a wonderful mansion, the former home of the Plant Family. Worth a look. Just outside the entry of the UConn campus on the left is the exclusive Shennecossett Beach club, a rather smallish but very private community. You had made reference as you entered Eastern Point Beach, to the house built out on an island/rock right off shore. That house was built by David Hayes, the late, famous stage designer. David also established the 'National Theater of the Deaf.' His colleague and designer Friend, Fred Voepoel, once said the "If David could find a harder way to do something, he'd do it!" Glad to learn the family name of the Eastern Point Beach House. The large white house at the entry to the beach now known as the 'Steven Syberski House' was named after the former manger of the beach and who maintained a very high standard for maintaining the beach and his team of Life Guards. It was originally owned by Al Ronnick who also owned the famous Light House Inn just across the Thames River in New London. Now long gone was a small modest summer home also near the beach entrance to the north owned by a Mr. (Harry?) Bemis, he of toilet seat fame and related necessities. It was know as 'Land's End." I only know this because my Dad, Angus (Tommy) Thompson, painted the sign at the end of the driveway for which he was never reimbursed. ;-) Mr. Bemis moved house and built a kind of 'castle' on a cliff at Eggemoggin Reach in Blue Hill, Maine, and sailed a magnificent sailboat there known as 'Rocinante.' Apologies for such a long message but was inspired by your video. Thanks, again. Fred

    I met the caretaker eons ago, and he told me how the " owner" of the home a (builder)? Had it moved from the area of the entrance to Avery Point Park!! To where it sits today!! Look it up, enjoy summer.

    Born and raised, 5 minute walk from eastern point beach. In fact there's a road there, named after my father (you DID drive through it). Relocated to Louisiana last October, feeling a little homesick. Surprised you didn't cover fort Griswold.

    Tom, my man...i love this video. I know that I keep talking about old girlfriends and when I was in college, I had a girlfriend in Groton so I drove Route 12 VERY often. Unfortunately, I didn't really get to see the places you point out here so I'm very intrigued. Other than her house and "Electric Boat" where I nearly became employed prior to nuclear power, I didn't realize how beautiful this town was. Thanks so much brother for posting this.

    Thanks Tom, it really is amazing to see this, hopefully you can higher resolution someday your videos as you mentioned. Hasn't really changed since the 1980's for the most part there that I can see. Been over 30 years since being back there myself. I grew up there. Sure is something. So nice in the summer.

      There is the City of Groton and the Town of Groton, they are different localities. The City though is sort of a subdivision of the town of Groton. Its kind of interesting with Mystic too as it is not really a recognized town per-se, it's part of Groton and Stonington more than anything, as it has no independent govt.

    • @moonshinefuel
      @moonshinefuel Год назад

      It has to do with the zip code of Mystic that makes it a part of Groton iirc.

    You missed an opportunity to address the town hall. Poquonnock Bridge is an old neighborhood consisting of housing converted into smaller privately owned homes after WWII.
