I smiled when I realised both of you guys chose Songs of Faith and Devotion as #1. Best album ever,no doubt for me
13stRussia I'm right there with you dude. SOFAD is a masterpiece
Playing the Angel is probably the most meaningful album to me, I think of roadtrips with my kids
I love all their albums. But music for the masses is my favorite by them.
Fav strangest love song: "It Doesn't Matter" Some Great Reward
Absolutely agree on SOFAD, it's a masterpiece, the finest peace of work they ever created, in spite of all the turmoil and the sad breakup, it is without a question their best work. To me, Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, Violator and SOFAD are their best work from lower to higher.
Exciter is underrated
Nah it's NOT!
@@dadasha yes it is. In fact it's their last really good album as of late.
it's underrated in being bad,it's superbad...worst they ever made
@@CynicalScorpio for me it's just a very boring album without any inspiration...if i describe 'atmospheric' I choose 'songs of faith and devotion' truly one hell of an album
@@CynicalScorpio Ultra is a million x's better

6. Songs of Faith and Devotion
7. Some Great Reward
8. Delta Machine (This is surprisingly excellent)
9. Playing The Angel
10. Speak and Spell (Love the new wave synth sound from the early eighties).
11. Sounds of The Universe (Contains several very good tracks! This album is sometimes criticized too harshly, but I totally understand why).
12. Construction Time Again
13. A Broken Frame
Not even sure my list is accurate. Love most of the albums almost equally, and all thirteen contain fantastic tracks. The only two I never listened to much are CTA and ABF.
Songs of Faith and devotion is my favourite album of all time and is a timeless classic... never gets old
I thought I was crazy and I never confessed my huge love for Songs of faith and devotion, but now seeing you guys as crazy as I am I really feel understood. This is an amazing era for me, I remember yelling a Rush everyday, spitting my guts out.
I feel not alone now :)
Yay! Thanks for watching, Sergio. Good to see you are a huge fan of Songs of Faith & Devotion too. :)
Bret Helm's Life On This Planet Blog So many great rewards with DM. It's curious but I listen to Black Celebration like in 2008, 20 years later I began to listen to them. And it's curious for me these are the two most emotional albums, I really love that sense of positive depression with the two of. This is a funny story but with one ex girlfriend we acted the whole album... We imagine vampires!
Sergio, you're certainly not alone. SOFAD is masterwork.

Ryan Tremblay Only when I lose myself is fantastic.
Such a great song!
Maybe I'm in the minority, but once Alan left, DM died for me. Sofad was the swan song of the top tier era of DM. After SOFAD they lost the epic "arena" level sound and became not much better than all the DM copy bands around at the time IMO. Black Celebration FTW! Great video.
I wonder what dm copy bands there were.
@@Sharkwhisperer oh, let's see : Red Flag (“Russian Radio), Cause & Effect (“You think you know her), Camouflage (“The great commandments”), Mesh, Covenant, Anything Box, etc. So many back in the 90's.
@@Cryptic808 thanks, I am very into music and I believe I know more artists than anyone but I havent heard of these artists. I had the idea that they were together with new order the last of the synthpop early 80s bands and most bands took a different route after 86 (duran duran f.e. but also music in general)
@@Sharkwhisperer Check out some of songs I listed above on RUclips. I didn't personally like any of them, but for example the Cause and Effect song is blatant Depeche Mode rip. In the early 90's shortly after DM's Violator was released there was an explosion in bad rip-off bands. I heard them on the radio where I was far more than I cared for.
@@Cryptic808 thanks, i checked the songs out. It is really blatantly copying. If at least they changed the way of singing. The great commandment has nice synthparts in it. They could play each others songs and nobody would notice.
My list:
1. Songs of faith and devotion
2. Violator
3. Music for the masses
4. Black celebration
5. Spirit
6. Playing the angel
7. Delta machine
8. Exciter
9. Ultra
10. Some great reward
11. Speak and spell
12. Sounds of the universe
13. Construction time again
14. A broken frame
Awesome video Bret ! I was just at the recorde store today looking at Depeche Mode vinyl looking for Violator which they didn't have but they had all these other ones you guys talked about.. I only have a Greatest Hits cd but I want to dive deeper into their catalogue.. Thank you.. Love your channel and these ranking videos.. The U2 one was awesome.. Thanks again.. Chez
Great video guys. I'm also a big fan of depeche mode. My favourite depeche mode album is black celebration. I also love songs of faith and devotion but i find it a bit too dark. I like black celebration because it has a good mix of dark and more poppy songs.
Really enjoyable video guys. I really liked the banter and the genuine shock Brett showed towards some of Jessie's placings. The Video got me thinking about my own personal ranking.A rough list of my favorites would be Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion, Music For the Masses, Black Celebration, Playing The Angel, and Ultra, The others I tend not to listen too very often. Great work, Simon
Great #1 pick
Some Great Reward was my first DM album and it got me hooked!
There's just something about Alan Wilder playing drums on that album that brings joy to the world. That's what I always think.
Brenden, well said. Thanks for watching. Enjoy your weekend and the beautiful Melbourne weather. - Bret
13. Sounds of the Universe 12. Exciter 11. Delta Machine 10. A Broken Frame 9. Construction Time Again 8. Speak and Spell 7. Playing The Angel 6. Ultra 5. Music for the Masses 4. Black Celebration 3. Some Great Reward 2. Songs of Faith and Devotion 1. Violator
Never in a million years will SOFAD be better than Violator in my book.
I love In Your Room (album version's the best), Rush and Walking In My Shoes though. And b-side My Joy is great too.
But SOFAD better than Violator when World In My Eyes, Enjoy The Silence, Policy Of Truth, Halo exists... nah.
The only drawback of Violator is its shortness but with B-sides Dangerous, Sea Of Sin and Happiest Girl, it's their creative peak for me.
And Precious belongs there too (even though it was written years later). It's just the best of the best from DM.
By far songs of faith and devotion is my fave depeche mode album. Just a truly amazing album from start to finish. I'm curious if you would ever do a Christian Death album ranking series?
To rank any of their recent albums higher than any of their earlier albums is crazy.
Hi guys, great video. Totally agree with your number one choice. When i was in the worst part of my addiction including also being in prison, I listened to this album continually on repeat. My cell mate hated DM to start wih but really grew to love them in the year we were together. It took the band to a very dark place. Violator would be my second for pretty much the same reasons. Fantastic post guys. Cheers James
The block of material starting with '84s Some Great Reward and ending at '90s Violator has long had me spellbound. There's no point in listing favorite songs from this period. The answer: "Most." Prior to SGR, songs I gravitate towards include "New Life", "Dreaming of Me", "Just Can't Get Enough", "Puppets", "Everything Counts", "Get the Balance Right" and "Shake the Disease".
Thanks Joe! Glad you enjoyed. Have a good weekend as well. - Bret
I just discovered your video blog. Great video! My favourite album still is Violator, because of the almost organic nature to it, really special. SOFA defenitely is a favourite too. With Violator you could feel this gloomy mood, that things were going wrong. With SOFA it went bad and they still produced a marvelous album. Or maybe, because of it.
Well said, Bas. I appreciate you watching and commenting - glad you enjoyed the video. - Bret
My list would probably look something like this:
1 - Music For The Masses (Strangelove 7" version... nnngh)
2 - Songs of Faith & Devotion (best tour ever)
3 - Black Celebration (saw the Last Celebration when they were supported by Talk Talk and New Order in Copenhagen. Mind turned to paste.)
4 - Construction Time Again (first tour I saw them live - hence the high place hehe)
5 - Violator (worst tour - at least the show in Stockholm)
6 - Ultra
7 - A Broken Frame
8 - Delta Machine
9 - Exciter
10 - Speak & Spell
11 - Playing The Angel
12 - Some Great Reward (this came out during my most frenzied fan-days and I simply played it too much)
13 - Sounds of The Universe (agreed on that cover - good grief. the deluxe box is ok, though, and had some nice goodies inside)
Depeche have such a treasure trove of good tracks. The b-sides alone could keep me happy for weeks. As you can probably guess from my username and avatar they are ever my favorite band hehe.
Great countdown =)
Excellent list, Tony. Very cool that you got to see DM so early in their career. Interesting to see where you've placed Delta Machine. I really loved Soulsavers - The Light The Dead See. How'd you like that LP?
Bret Helm's Life On This Planet Blog I really liked it as well. It's mellow (with a few exceptions) and a good choice for a lazy sunday afternoon. Though, there are moments on that album that feels a little...bland. You know? Still, I hope there's more coming.
Songs of Faith and Devotion is worthy of number 1 but it's 2 for me, behind Violator (that album to get you into the band bias and what not).
Have a great time at the upcoming show, Jean. Undecided if I'm gonna make it out to see them this time around. Ticket prices are just out of control these days! Totally agree with you - while the new album is decent, I'm happy they are still making music and taking the songs out to the people. Thanks for watching. - Bret
Thank you! I appreciate all of the kind words - glad you are enjoying the videos. Good luck with your Depeche Mode collection - Violator is a difficult one to find on vinyl, but as you can tell from my video... any Depeche Mode album is good for the collection. Thanks again. - Bret
Yes, songs of faith and devotion best album from DM. My second fav is Ultra and Painkiller from the single CD Barrel of a gun. Greeting from Argentina.!
Songs of Faith and Devotion is my number one to. Proof that difficult times can produce great art.
Lovell, glad to hear that our Top 4 were almost identical! :)
good job you introduced that hirsute guy on the right otherwise wouldnt have recognised him! My favourite DM album is Violater but I dont have a full set so i need to get onto it and expand what I have! - John
I think this is one of my favorite albums of yours now. Depeche Mode has a special place in my heart :3
Thanks John! That guy on the right always seems to show up when I'm about to film a video. :) Violator is a great choice - takes me right back to 1990! Have a good weekend! - Bret
I will never understand putting Speak and Spell above any other album in their discography. Even Leave in Silence from (A Broken Frame) sounds like a masterpiece compared to any song from their debut.
Just posted an updated ranking video today: Depeche Mode - Ranking the Albums from 'Speak and Spell' to 'Memento Mori'
ruclips.net/video/4SDkDNhcm3w/видео.html
Nice ranking of Depeche Mode, it's cool to see what people like. For me it's all good no matter what the order however I think the new album is good maybe because I just saw them live. Anyway, very cool video
Mine is a bit different: 1. SGR, 2. Black Celebration, 3. A Broken Frame, 4. Violator, 5. Construction Time Again, 6. Speak & Spell, 7. Music for the Masses, 8. Ultra, 9. SOFAD... 10. Exciter... 11. SOTU, 12. Playing the Angel... 13. Delta Machine................... .......... ......... 14. Spirit
But it's tough with the first nine to rank.
Thanks James. I appreciate it. - Bret
Songs of Faith and Devotion is my Number 1 for me too. The arrangement the mood killer album In Your Room love it to death very underrated. agreed Number two for me is Music for the Masses then Number 3 Black celebration Number 4 Violator.
'Paris' is definitely an excellent live record - great version of 'Charlotte Sometimes.' Happy to see you feel the same way about Songs Of Faith & Devotion. Thanks for watching, Damian. - Bret
Black Celebration and Ultra are my favs. Playing the Angel and Some Great Reward is up there as well. Oh and Music For The Masses.
Nice Video...my number one is some great reward
Thanks for watching - Yeah, Some Great Reward is definitely excellent. Cheers!
I don't know, but Ultra is the best for me. I can't stop listening to it, even if came out 20 yrs ago.
Great album.
Trying to choose this is like trying to pick which limb i dont need
I think Delta machine is one of their better albums, surprised to see it at the bottom. Actually I even prefer it to SOFAD.
Thanks for watching! Delta Machine was pretty new when I filmed this video. My opinions have changed a lot on it since then. "Broken" is a top tier Depeche Mode song for me. Planning on doing an updated ranking after the new record is out!
@@BretHelmsLifeOnThisPlanetBlog I take it you've heard the songs on the Deluxe version , Always, Happens all the time, All that's mine and Long Time Lie? Weirdly enough they're the best songs on the album IMO.
Good Job guys !!!
nice video. Pretty sure But Not Tonight wasn't a UK single :)
u should to do any erasure albums review
Exciter is a definite grower, needs more love. Ultra is amazing as is SOFAD, Violator pretty damn good.
Black Celebration and Music For The Masses I always view and listen to as a pair, great together.
I couldn't get into Delta Machine either... I didn't even bother with Spirit.
Thanks Fernando!
Way to be honest with the new DM album. I heard half of it and it did nothing for me that sounded new and original. I suppose this would happen to a lot of 80's bands who's overall sound is keyboard orientated".
I did love your top three picks. After that I think I would choose 'Speak and Spell'. I am a huge Vince Clark fan so I would give that high marks because of him.
Great job guys. Maybe Dave will repost this on the DM site?
Talk to you soon Bret~
Rob/Boston
Great vid but you both put Construction Time Again way too low! Prob about my fourth favorite with everything counts, two minute warning, and then, love in itself... I love that warm synth pop sampledelic vibe
1 violator
2 black celebration
3 some great reward
4 construction time again
5 song of faith and devotion
6 ultra
7 music for the masses
8 exciter
9 playing the angel
The rest... Don't know well enough
Thanks Simon!
Thanks Travis.
What do you guys think of Spirit?
Songs of Faith and Devotion was probably DM's akin to Beatles "White" album moment. Still holds up well 20 years later, and I was disappointed when Delta Machine came out after DM claimed this was their best work since SOFAD and Violator.
Hey miss your uploads brett. Wonder what you make of 'Spirit'.
How can you put Some Great Reward so low? It was a huge breakthrough album in America.
Thanks for watching! - Bret
14 Spirit
13 Sounds of the Universe
12 Exciter
11 Playing the Angel
10 Delta Machine
09 Songs of Faith and Devotion
08 Music for the Masses
07 Speak & Spell
06 Violator
05 A Broken Frame
04 Some Great Reward
03 Ultra
02 Construction Time Again
01 Black Celebration
Thanks for watching! :) - Bret
Where would you rank Spirit?
Haven't really spent much time with it after the first 2 listens - it probably would settle right in there with Delta Machine for me as of right now
Bret Helm's Life On This Planet Blog I was a bit uninspired by it after the first listen, but it really started to resonate as I listened more. I would put it somewhere around the 9 to 11 range as of now.
My ranking:
1. SOFAD
2. MFTM
3. Violator
4. Some Great Reward
5. Black Celebration
6. Ultra
7. Construction Time Again
8. Delta Machine
9. Exciter
10. SOTU
11. A Broken Frame
12. Spirit
13. Playing the Angel
14. Speak & Spell
I would put it last. By far my least favorite. I typically have 5-7 songs I love on each album but I only have 3 on this one that I like. No more, you move, fail.
Well said. :)
Dm ♥
4 me Delta machine its in the top 5 .....
Rebels
2 minute warning
sounds of the universe should be bottom.
Hahahaha! You know it.
beginning with Exciter everything went downhill...
