In this video, Dr. Ujwal Gajula explains what an umbilical hernia is, its causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Learn about hernia surgery and prevention strategies.
    What is an Umbilical Hernia?
An umbilical hernia is a condition where a portion of the intestine or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the belly button, causing a bulge or a lump. It can happen in both children and adults, but it is more common in infants.
    Causes of Umbilical Hernia
Umbilical hernias occur when the abdominal muscles do not close completely after the baby's birth, leading to a weak spot in the abdominal wall. In adults, it can be caused by straining the abdominal muscles due to obesity, pregnancy, or excessive coughing. Some people are also born with weak abdominal muscles, making them more prone to umbilical hernias.
    Symptoms of Umbilical Hernia
The most common symptom of an umbilical hernia is a visible bulge or lump near the belly button. It may also cause pain or discomfort, especially when coughing, lifting heavy objects, or standing for a long time. In some cases, the hernia may become trapped, leading to severe pain and nausea, which requires immediate medical attention.
    Treatment Options for Umbilical Hernia
In infants, most umbilical hernias close on their own within the first year of life. However, if it persists after the age of 4 or causes discomfort, surgery may be required to repair the abdominal wall. In adults, umbilical hernias do not heal on their own and often require surgical repair. The surgery involves pushing the herniated tissue back into the abdomen and reinforcing the abdominal wall with stitches or a mesh.
    Prevention for Umbilical Hernia
Unfortunately, there is no sure way to prevent umbilical hernias. However, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding heavy lifting, and properly treating respiratory infections can reduce the risk of developing an umbilical hernia.
