Today we are doing a few farm chores and showing what is going on around our farm. I also have something on my mind that I want to talk about.
If you are entering or are in the farming world, there are a lot of mistakes that I'm seeing folks making. "Where do I sell my products?", "What should I price my products at?" are 2 very common questions that are popping up everywhere.
These are serious questions that you need to be addressing or your farm will fail. Farm business and being smart about your business is essential to survival and we want to see more farmers succeed.

We get this question all the time. I wish more people would price there eggs correctly. We are at a 2% profit on eggs without labor. If we priced correctly per our other products we would be $4 a dozen more than our competitors. This is a great conversation to have. The other one is processing chickens. You better have your plan in place before you order the chicks. 8 weeks goes quick.

It is so important to point out, with whom you are NOT competing. My wife is in the arts (jewelry and stuff). She needed to learn over a looong period of time that she is not competing with some china-reseller or some mass produced shit. It's art, it's handmade. It's individually made. It's a mindset question and we all need to understand that the product and the ethics are just different and it has a price. Slowly people are picking up on that. The problem is just, that some people can't afford to do that. And that's the sad part. We're being kept poor so we have to rely on cheap goods. Be it food, be it consumer goods. It's always the same shit.

I'm on a small scale by far compared to your farm ..
I make sure I have butcher dates every 6 months
75% the time I call & cancel 2/3 months in advance so they have time to fill my spots .
.I learned the hard way few years ago with my pigs , I waited to long to call & get process dates & almost had to do it my self ..
Lesson learned 👊👊
I only process cows & pigs for friends & family .

Awesome. Nothing wrong with being small. We started with 50 chickens and 6 pigs. It'll will grow for sure.
My biggest challenge this year is how quickly feed cost has gone up and other farmers keeping the same price low that they have sold beef for the last 10 years. I might add there is lots of competition in my area. This spring I have taken my normal % profit and cut in half for spring beefs. I have also went ahead and raised my summer beef prices and my fall. I have had some customers leave, some gripe about the price and I explain the increase and some just say I understand and went ahead and placed their order. By doing this I’ve learned I am getting a more loyal customer base.
I do believe you will be getting your wish for more farmers! There has been an extreme exit from California and other states!

You hit it on the head, whole bunch of uneducated homesteaders. It is terrible. I own 200 acres in Ava missouri, spent days riding around speaking to locals. The homestead, popup farmers are highly disliked by the locals. The biggest problem is failures. Just as you said, don't do it if you don't have a plan and your facts together.
Yeah. You have to know how to be ready to sell so you don't wind up with a bunch of product and no where to sell it.

Great video and great advice! I agree with every single point you made. And I also agree that we need more local farmers. Not only are the grocery stores not quite as reliable as they should be but good lord who knows how that mess was raised and what’s really went into it.

We just had a buyer back out of a half hog. They asked why are we charging $3/lb hanging weight + processing when they can get one from a processor for $1.89/lb….
Just keep in mind that person is not your customer. There are billions of people on planet earth. There are people who will pay your price. Hang I there and go friend them.

The question that gets me is what is everyone asking for their product . They have no idea what it cost . I know almost exactly what I put in an animal . I only raise for family and friend .

I raised 4 pigs last year and sold 2. Damn near broke even, got 5 growing currently and the 3 we sell are sold for an August date. We should make a few dollars. We could have sold six or 8 just by word of mouth. Next year we plan to raise 8 and sell 6, I figure if we go slowly it could become a thing for us. We'll see what happens 🤷♂️
Exactly. Keep doing what you are. Contain your coat as much as possible and price your products with some profit on the end. Keep growing it!!

Thanks for all the advice, surely is helping to make peoples lives better. Best advice I got was to charge right for your craft product and to start marketing as soon as you can even you do not have the product.
Not sure if this is the video that you mentioned that some sows didn't get bred. I am wondering if it may have been a physical thing. Sometimes if one boar tries to breed a sow, if there is another big boar there they won't let each other complete the job...just a thought.... Also, have you ever tried red wattles? We really prefer them over other breeds, especially versus Berkshires! The guy we buy piglets from actually delivers down to Florida sometimes.

And people will pay top dollar for you pasture raised animals. I sold a pig already for $1000 that's not even born yet. From farm to table. And he knows he can get it cheaper from the store, he just doesn't want it. The market is out there!

Chuck another great video. My question isn't around pigs an who knows maybe you will answer it in your next video. But it's in regards to poultry. An I get based on region. But when do you take your chicks from brooder to pasture? Is it based on them feathering out? I just don't want to run a heat lamp out on pasture. Thanks again

Do you have any problems with feral hogs? They’re a plague for us in east Texas. I’m hoping a good electric perimeter fence will help us.

You have some really nice looking Durco boars. Do you have Berkshire Durco cross for the most part? I've never been around Berkshire hogs. How do you like em temperament wise?
Just curious I had a guy tell me that they don't do well in the heat. I just got that second hand.
We used to grind our own feed. I just started watching.
I don't know if you have a job in town or not. And time is at a premium for you?
I like the fact that you're running you hogs in the timber. Electric fence is probably the best fence for hogs in my opinion. I've got a lot to learn. I haven't raised hogs since 1989. Here in Nebraska.
You do what you want. This is just a suggestion. In the one group you had 3 boars. Have you ever thought of running a boar with 5 or so sows. And rotating the boars every other day. I had a boar get busted up running two boars together.
But getting back to rotating boars the musk scent from the previous boar makes the other boar more active.
It worked for me. A older farm gave me that tip. Hope it's helpful to you. It helped me and I thought I got bigger litters.

Yes. Berkshire/Duroc is the primary cross we use. Love their temperment but we also spend lots of time with them and that helps.
I do have a town job but work remotely most of the time.

Morning from SW Louisiana. I have 22 acres of land and want to start raising pigs / goats/ chickens. Have many questions that I will start off with a few now I have been watching many vids for a few weeks and currently building a chicken tractor using many ideals from you and a few others! My first question is on raising pasture pigs and or goats? I’ve noticed in your pasture you seem to be using electric fence. What are the pro/cons to brand type of fence. Also how secure are they, meaning do the pigs get out often?
Question Two-how much if any table scraps etc. can one feed to cut feed cost ( starting out will be raising for my consumption only)
Question three- how much land is needed per head and can one share same lot we th both pig and goats?

I enjoy your videos I'm in KY. I believe a person has to find a happy medium of all the ways people raise things. I'm finding it tough to sell a premium product during a time when most people are looking for cheap $$$. I have pure Berkshire pigs, F-1 Akaushi (wagyu) beef ,pasture poultry, & looking to get hair sheep & an Australian White ram.Any suggestions on getting people to see the difference & spend a little more? Feed prices aren't helping either. Thanks

Supercharge your marketing in social media. Include photos of Walmart chops vs yours. Start your website and tell your story and explain how yours are better. Go to festivals, donate a pig for a pig roast benefit somewhere and talk to people, or your church. Don’t expect people to know the differences like you do. Don’t tell ‘em, sell ‘em.
You can also raise some good pork with mixed breeds due to the way you raise them. Be creative and tell it like it is. It’s like buying a new car, ask questions and then show them how your pork fills their wants and needs. A good opener is asking about their experience with goods made in east Asia. Take it from there and make the analogy based upon their response.

Yes. I have a couple of them for some of our smaller paddocks. They work great.

Surely there must be a spreadsheet someone has made to keep track of input costs and so on. I’ve searched for Pig cost analysis, swine/hog valuations but came up empty. Anyone know of one? Please tell me where to download it.

Hey chuck, what do you do about predators? do they typically not bother full size pigs?
I have coyotes and wild dogs, black vultures, hawks and owls. Lost a few chickens and two turkeys, but they don’t bother the pigs. I do keep mama and her piglets inside a hog fence enclosure, but I also have a livestock guardian dog.
How many pigs do you have to run at a time to be profitable?
You can run 1 or 2 and be profitable. After that’s it’s scale and cost containment with a good marketing plan.

No. No rat or mice problems. We have a cat that is around. That’s probably helping.
I think that pricing based on input costs is, put kindly, less than optimal. I agree that analyzing costs to determine margin is important in evaluating a business overall but determining price based on that lacks the sophistication that the study of economics and business has provided us. Pricing should be done in order to maximize profit while maintaining your values- the cost in that equation is a foregone conclusion. Your pricing won't change your cost, however your pricing will impact your profit. Your price should be set based on maximizing revenue while minimizing time and money to make the sale and also preventing waste. Imagine you are selling your eggs for $7 per dozen because your cost is $5 per dozen and you want to make $2 for each sold. If every other pasture raised hen's eggs are being sold for $6.50 a dozen, you will sell approximately 0 dozen if you have no other differentiating asset. That is horrible business because you priced based on a failed strategy. Instead, if you had sold at $6.50, your product is competing based on it's merits and unfortunately, the established connections others selling similar products have already made, but at least you would be selling some. Instead, if you had sold at $6.00, you would be forming new customer relationships, increasing sales, preventing loss and potentially selling out. None of these positive outcomes would have been achieved if you followed this man's pricing advice. I gotta say, these youtube farmers have so much information about farming that is useful and really unfortunate misunderstandings of business. It isn't all wrong but its certainly wrong enough to sink some businesses.

I can do labor as hard or harder and faster than anyone but figuring out how to get someone to buy my product I'm just not good at it. I'm subscribed to many wonderful farming channels but NONE OF THEM EVER GIVE SPECIFIC ADVICE ON HOW OR EVEN TALK ABOUT IT ANYWHERE! NONE! Just telling people to market doesn't cut it. HOW???? Any idiot can do labor. How do you find customers and market? No one gives advice HOW?

Have 4 weeks until my 4 feeder piglets arrive, called for pricing on feed yesterday, $500 a ton. Looking into growing fodder but finding seeds for that is hard or twice the cost of regular feed.
It’s up to about $575-580/ ton here now. West TN.

I could not agree more! I run a group for direct marketing of farm products. we have people that come in and ask " what is everyone selling thier products for?"
our group is for direct sales not telling people how to set their price.
if they don't know what to charge our group is not the place for them.

Still no explanation on where to sell
Farmers markets, friends, family, people you work with, flyers at local gyms, online, Craigslist, give talks at local ruritan clubs, fire departments, talk at the local chamber of commerce.
That should get you started.

Thank you for this great video. Ever since I was young people have told me I shouldn’t farm because it’s difficult or I will go bankrupt. Well I am stubborn so I started raising animals anyway after just getting married and flipping our first small house in town for 3 acres. I am working on my excel spreadsheets now since people have been asking about harvesting already. Your videos are great guidelines to show me how others do what I want to do. With hope in my heart I will keep donkey kicking through life.
+1 you need to figure out the selling before raising the animals or you'll end up with pets. "Cost Plus" is not the way to figure pricing (it's a component and useful to see) and remember the supermarket component is also a huge factor. Ask 'a typical housewife' about prices and they'll know them from half a dozen stores down to the penny and will drive across town to use a coupon. ... Define what you are selling different than everyone else (why a customer comes to you) and figure out the price they are willing to pay for that difference, subtract your profit, and then figure out how to raise that product for the cost margin left -- and if you can't grow a pig for the "ten dollars" left over from market price less profit then you need to rethink the product line or process used.

Great video as always! Needed to hear what you had to say. Alot of farmers in my area have discouraging advice for this business. All of the ones with negative advice, are raising pigs in sties/pens and not out in nature where they should be. Thank you for helping me clear my head.

Well sir let me give you a cost cutting measure first of all once your sows are bread remove the boar hogs and sell them why you are feeding them 5 months and not getting nothing but a feed bill for them 3 boars

Also I know another hog farmer and he said what you just said the boars are desensitized to the estrus!! He said never ever keep a boar in with your sows only to breed and pull them out..
