I love how he says, he travels, plays music, and money earned he invests it in his town...El Paso, it hits home literally. Im still in El Paso, i love my town. And he gets good bands into town to play at Tricky Falls venue, and its amazing. Thanks Jim, for all you do for our town, and for bands to get a taste of our culture and welcoming spirits.
10 or 15 dollar show at The Globe in Denver. Wanna say in 2019. Small venue. But I'll tell you what. It was one of the most intimate and most kickass shows I've EVER seen. Sparta is DA SHIT!!!!!
Likewise, hidinginlowlight also nailed it. Saw ATDI last week, good effort but felt so incomplete sans Jim. I keep watching a bunch of the old shows here trying to fill in the gap. Much love and respect JW, whatever you do!
Didn't see this before. I like listening to his way of living music still as an art. Hope to keep having new music. I loved broken songs btw. Nice interview. Thank you for doing this !
"The goal is to make records, you know?" That's why I still draw in from jim still. That's the truth. Now jim help me make mines. I'll pay I just want someone to light me a pathway. xD
From the Bay Area in CA. Why the hell did I think Jawbreaker was from Chicago. lol I figured since Smoking Popes wrote a song about them they were from the same area.
I nearly spat my tea out when he mentioned J Church as an influence. J Church? I love them a lot still but have never heard anyone site them as an influence
For a while in the later years of ATDI, Cedric and Omar became kind of the frontmen of the band. Shows would include stage banter where Cedric would shout at reporters "Hey there's members of the band that don't have afros". Jim co-wrote a lot of those songs and it felt like their very democratic group was going to be controlled by only Omar and Cedric. When the band re-united in 2012, they still tried to keep that spirit of democracy alive. In 2016 however, ATDI was booked for a festival tour around the world without even contacting Jim once about it. His worst fears of the band being this thing out of his complete control had come true.
I think there's some leaps you've made there to make a story. And the whole "guys without afros" thing was actually the opposite of what you seem to be implying, in that it was Cedric telling people to not just focus on Omar and himself. Personally, I think there's little more to it now that Jim being his own man and simply not wanting to do the latest ATDI stuff. He does seem to not like to get bogged down in the same stuff for too long and it would make sense that he didn't want to go back to that.
Ian, wtf, i had never heard about any of those things. Is there even a reasonable basis of info where you pulled that from? At most, cedric has blamed himself from causing the breakup of atdi by leaving because he wanted to do something else. But neither him nor omar ever sought protagonism in atdi, they were just their irreverent selves. And whats this of cedric and omar booking tours for reunited atdi behind jims back?? None of them has ever talked about jims sudden departure yet, as far as i know, so how did you come up with this??
i am sure he could have reeled off a hundred great bands from back then..hey i saw the promise ring play in manchester uk supporting jimmy eat..this was when jew were getting all big..the audience sucked and pretty much booed promise ring off stage..i have never felt so ashamed to be part of an audience as i did that night because i loved that band and all the Capp n Jazz/Joan Of Arc/Owls other projects..fucking Manchester hipster's didn't even know who they were booing
still sounds exactly the same since 20 years ago, unfortunately i cant say the same for cedric, he burnt out his voice really hard during at the drive in and even after in The Mars Volta
Still don’t get it, man. Cedric and Omar, who had pretty much broken up atdi years before (and not on good terms), return to reform. Then, mere days before atdi is to properly kick off, Jim leaves, gets replaced with Davis, who had been brought into Sparta by Jim, and then Sparta reunite without Davis and without Tony hajjar who was cofounder of Sparta and Jim's proper bro (i mean Jim did a movie about his life!), and still until now no one wants to SAY A WORD ABOUT IT??! Man, something went down.
I've been a big fan of ati, tmv, sparta, since inception… it really is jarring , and mysterious. I agree, something went down, which made jim let down his fans, which means it must've been something big. I hope cedric and Omar didn't relapse in their old ways.
Hi Eric, I'm curious where you heard that information. I saw ATDI yesterday, and even though the show was well played, it felt wrong to celebrate that music without Jim there. I have so much respect for him, his music, and the way that he carries himself.
@@AProblemSituation I wouldnt say he's best or most important but he's definitely a huge piece of the puzzle that made it gel together properly though.
Jim Ward is the heart of ATDI, and their founder. Reunion without him makes no sense at all. That's why the band ended up like that.

Good to hear!
Just saw Sparta play Club Dada in Dallas an hr ago. They killed it.
Nice! Greaat Sparta is getting back out there.
@ericpritch @ericpritch they have been playing shows for years and touring bro
Jim speaks the truth. So much respect for him and his talents
+Isley Reust I agree! Thanks for checking out this piece.
+Eric Pritchard Thanks for making this piece
one of the most humble and nice persons i ever seen. 101% respect
Jim Ward is just the definition of a good lad. Who is also a brilliant songwriter.

+Ronnie Moe I know right.

i don't think its really at the drive in without him.
Didn't see this before.

Nice interview. Thank you for doing this !
Thanks!
I love him.
That last part. Holy shit. So blunt. ❤
I still have my ticket subs stubs from all of your san Diego tours. Some of the best concerts I've ever been to.
A Real musician

the true last rock star
OMG I FUCKING LOVE JAWBOX!!!
Hey I talked to this guy
I nearly spat my tea out when he mentioned J Church as an influence. J Church? I love them a lot still but have never heard anyone site them as an influence
Yeah J Church was one of those bands that weren't for everyone but some people loved them.
Great artist, shame some of his bandmates feel the need to be such arseholes to him, not that they're not talented too.
What did they do ?
They raped him.

1:43 why is there two songs playing?
Good ear. No idea. Lol.
what does "intelligent punk" means?
He's referring to Jawbreaker and J-church or punk bands with with smart thought out lyrics.
still sounds exactly the same since 20 years ago, unfortunately i cant say the same for cedric, he burnt out his voice really hard during at the drive in and even after in The Mars Volta
Jim Ward, the reason why ATDI is now kinda average..
i never wanted to believe that... until the newest ATDI album came out... and there's definitely something big missing
i agree 100%

maybe just differing personalities, even though they were great together as ATDI, they grew apart, it's sad but true.
sparta is a huge influence on my band!!! - alleydirt.bandcamp.com
Nice. Alley Dirt songs sounds good!
any idea when this is from?
I directed this 5 years or so back before ATDI got back together. We originally just released it on Vimeo and I recently put it on youtube.
Eric Pritchard I see, I was just hoping Sparta got back
Hopefully at some point :)
Hey Eric,
Does anyone know what happened to Jim Ward? I've been searching for him online, it's almost as if he's a ghost.
unfortunately no idea. i'm sure he'll be back soon doing rad stuff.
I'm so confused. so was he never going to be a part of the reunion?
+aligboyakasha I heard he was but the rehearsals didn't work out. Maybe he'll be back.
+Eric Pritchard Interesting. thanks for the response. did you conduct this interview?
yes. this video piece was done 4 years ago though.

This is a great interview, by the way.
the greatest job this guy ever did,was starting a great rock band with kinky hair, then have them kick them out of his own band. Thanks Jim.
Let's be honest here, Jim's the best and most important member of ATD-I.
