Exploring The 70 Mile Long Alamo Road Near Area 51 pt2

  • This is the second of two videos of my exploring and driving the 4WD dirt-surfaced Alamo road that runs for 70 miles from where Kenny Veach disappeared out across the desert and near the secret military base Groom Lake and Area 51. The military testing base was heavily posted and I did not attempt to go cross country on foot for a closer look. Too many eyes in the sky for that.
I do find a lot of Indian stone tools and find some petroglyphs along with a dried-out but perfectly preserved desert tortoise shell, a really cool badger skull, and spent WW2 munitions.
    About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure,
metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my RUclips "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.
BTW, you can also catch me here, / chiggsarmy ,but I may get a little edgier there. FB isn't a place for kids anyway...lol.

Large birds, especially ravens, flip tortoises over, peck holes through the undersides where the shell is thinner, and eat the innards. I drive washboard roads at 35-40. That way the tires hit only the tops of the "ripples" and the ride smoothes way out.

I'm happy to see people like you show how interesting the desert is. The day might come when all that will remain will be videos like yours. I've read, "Every year, thousands of acres of desert habitat are fragmented and degraded from recent human activities such as urban growth, illegal off-highway vehicle activity, large-scale development, and resource extraction".
That doesn't include the damage from climate change which is also devasting to the plants and animals. Thanks, Beau, for taking us along on another interesting and important adventure.

The scenery is breath taking.... and now I know the difference between a petroglyph and a pictograph, if high school had been this good, I would have learned more, thank you Chigg💖 So somebody shot the badger, how long ago, for food or sport??? Poor badger. I wonder what happened to the tortoises. We had one named Brady, just wandered into the yard one day. I'm really loving the desert videos, thanks again.

We had many families of kit foxes that also lived in burrows, and rabbits, and other smaller critters. Surprisingly common. The one real danger we noted was all the open vertical mine pits, many of which had the markers long gone. About 18:00 in those corrals are commonly used when they are gathering wild horses and burros for the BLM. It may be for open range and watering, but it looks more like the temporary corrals for the wild mustang roundups.

It' was amazing to me ,coming from Ohio , how fast you could be in the wilderness once you turned off a main road out there. I got off near Phoenix on Cave Creek, went down a mile or 2 turned onto another road went around a hill and all of a sudden there was nothing but rocks and dirt and everything looked the same, I was off the road that fast. Luckily I stopped right away and I got out of the car and walked back a bit to find the road again, if I hadn't noticed , who knows where I might have ended up?.

Chigg, those are pictographs (painted onto the rocks) as opposed to petroglyphs which are etched/carved into the rock. Occasionally they are both, carved then painted.
As you travel through the Great Basin, note the old wave terraces/benches cut into the sides of the hills. Only +/- 13K years ago the area was still covered by highly productive freshwater lakes and marshes that were highly attractive to the first thin bands of people.

We drove 110 miles in straight to area 51 and this is because we were told by our military escorts where we were. They were actually very nice people but they did take CB radios, phones ,cameras and an memory sticks. I saw some strange things there. A hangar that looks just like a hillside unless you're about 30 feet in front of it. The other stuff is even more strange.
