      kyushen23 - please show me in the Jesus’ words in the Bible where he said the book is the only way! We have his words, verbatim in the Bible- he is God, and therefore omniscient, he would have known the Bible was coming some 400 years later. Why did he not instruct the apostles to compile this book and that the book would be the only ingredient and requirement to practice the faith? Why? You reject tradition, ok, so be it. So the Latin and Orthodox Churches are older and have apostolic succession, but you have it figured out? Why do you care, are Latin and Orthodox Catholicism a threat to you?

    I was raised an Evangelical Christian. I started investigating Catholic theology to prove it wrong. I was confirmed as a Catholic a year later. When I looked at what Protestants claimed the church taught compared to what it actually taught and it’s answers, the obvious choice was to join.

      As a catholic, sometimes its tiring being labeled such and such, and told time and time again that i should believe so and so when its not what catholics believe. I would like to evangelize others but sometimes i get fear coz while i might not be stoned to death like the christians of old, i might be called a whore of babylon or something. Imagining what the saints and martyrs went through, makes you think its a miracle that catholicism is still around for more than 2 thousand years. Its a testament to Christs promise not to abandon us that we persevere

Jesus never told them to do this but through the authority of the keys of the kingdom of Heaven, given to St. Peter and the Apostles, they filled the seat vacated by Judas. Not only did they replace him, but they established the method by which a new bishop is ordained, as well as priests and deacons.

      @@jeffscully1347 Hi Jeff good to hear from you. Acts Chapter 1 from verse 16 onwards sets out the fulfilment of prophecy, and Peter goes to great length's to articulate this. The replacement of Judas is very specific to Judas who btw did an evil thing. All references are to 'his' i.e. Judas not other apostles. For example in verse 20 it reads "may another take HIS office" Neither Peter nor the other apostles mention anything about establishing this as a process for replacing apostles. I'm afraid this just a fact. It's a very specific, and Peter makes this point well, about the replacement of Judas as a fulfilment of prophecy. To read it any other way is to read things into this that just aren't there. It's pretty basic to be honest.

    • @Real_LiamOBryan
      @Real_LiamOBryan 4 года назад +14

      We have to be careful, though, when thinking about this. Truth doesn't get worse with age. It doesn't slowly become false. I agree with you, there is a lack of engagement with the primary resources on the part of Protestants, but that doesn't speak to the truth of what they are saying (or what the secondary scholarship is saying). After all, that is why academic scholarship exists. It is an attempt to analyze and synthesize truth and beliefs from primary sources. That's how society builds on the past, academically.

      True

    • @Real_LiamOBryan
      @Real_LiamOBryan 4 года назад +1

      @Patz13 I guess you just didn't understand the conversation. The point was that the fact that the Protestant uses secondary sources doesn't speak to the truth. You have to ask yourself what I meant when I used the word "that" when I said:
      "...but that doesn't speak to the truth of what they are saying (or what the secondary scholarship is saying)."
      The word "that", there, refers to the antecedent clause "there is a lack of engagement with the primary resources on the part of Protestants". That means that it doesn't speak to the truth of the Protestants claim *in virtue of* the fact that it is from secondary sources, which it doesn't. This misunderstanding just underscores my point that we need to think carefully about these issues.

    • @Real_LiamOBryan
      @Real_LiamOBryan 4 года назад +6

      @Patz13 I don't need to deal with it, Patz13. That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. You just are not understanding the conversation. I'm not talking about any particular point, or any particular secondary source, or whether any source is right or wrong, or whether anybody using such sources is right or wrong. What I'm talking about is the fact, indisputable fact, that using secondary sources is not an issue and has no part in determining the truth of any claim made on the basis of such sources or any claim made by such sources themselves.
      I sincerely hope you understand now so that you can stop being miffed over, and stop trying to correct people over, something you simply misunderstood.
      By the way, even though I am a Protestant, I'm not on the "Protestant side" here. I'm very Catholic friendly. I can honestly say that I desire to be a Catholic. I think Trent Horn is a better apologist than Mike. I like Mike, but I think that Trent is one of the top 5 Christian apologists today, at least that I know of. I also think that Mike Winger is often wrong, even on this topic. So, there we go, I hope that I've gotten everything out of the way that may be coming between us.
      Peace, my brother/sister (assuming you are a Christian).

    • @Real_LiamOBryan
      @Real_LiamOBryan 4 года назад +7

      @Patz13 *"No. You are the one who is not understanding the significance of the Protestant Pastor, who relies on incorrect secondary sources."*
      Again, the Protestant pastor has nothing to do with my point. I don't need to think about the Protestant pastor because I'm not talking about him. I'm only talking about the fact that a source is secondary having no relation to whether truth is found in it or not. If you can't understand that, then there is no point in continuing to talk to you.
      *"You can't deal with the incompetence of your Protestant heroes."*
      Mike's not a hero of mine. Again, I think Trent is more a hero of mine than Mike is. Your words here do not even interact with the points me and Joel made and, so, are pointless.

At that time, there was no church, pastor, or priest. It is the responsibility of all those who follow Jesus to do these things, and according to Ephesians 4:11-12 the church and its leadership are responsible to train and equip people to do these great works. Isn't it sad that most believers have taken the authority given to each individual follower by Jesus and handed that authority over to the church. Most of those who call themselves a follower of Jesus will in fact never make a disciple, baptize, or teach obedience. @@Psalm34rws Hey brother. Matthew 28:18-20 and Acts 1:6-8. Jesus gave his Great Commission to all believers. Based on Matthew 28:17 we know that there were definitely others in attendance besides the 11. There was no church, no presbyter, no priest. In fact there is only one example in the book of Acts where we know who GAVE baptism. Acts 8 shows that Philip, a non-apostle, a non-priest, a non-pastor gave baptism. Try to find one other example in Acts where you see the name of the person who gave baptism. By the way, there were 120 believers who received the Holy Spirit at Pentacost. Among these were both men and women. Very few of them went on to have any official leadership position in the church. Your claim that there are "Holy Orders" to go out and do EV, discipleship, and church planting is absolutely unfounded in the Bible. I am afraid that is a Roman Catholic Church doctrine. And I am sorry that you have given your God-given authority to the church.

    St. Athanasius didn't believe in Sola Scriptura. He said that in debating Arians, Scripture was only used insofar as to defend its honor/the orthodox understanding, and not as if it was necessary or the only sole recourse.
    "But, beyond these sayings [of Scripture], let us look at the very tradition, teaching, and faith of the Catholic Church from the beginning, which the Lord gave, the Apostles preached, and the Fathers kept."

    "But after him and with him are all inventors of unlawful heresies, who indeed refer to the Scriptures, **but do not hold such opinions as the saints have handed down,** and receiving them as the traditions of men, err, because they do not rightly know them nor their power."

    "But since they allege the divine oracles [Scripture] and force on them a misinterpretation, **according to their private sense,** *it becomes necessary to meet them just so far as to vindicate* these passages, and to show that they bear an orthodox sense, and that our opponents are in error ..."

      Ave Christus Rex The doctrine of Sola Scriptura allows us to appeal to other authorities, but it's are not to be the final authority, since Holy Scripture alone is infallible (2 Tim 3:16). Tradition as I know it to be is basically the Gospel as St. Paul states in his epistles and even specifically as St. Irenaeus and Tertullian what was to be the Apostles creed.
      What tradition consists of later on at the time of St. Athanasius if I'm correct doesn't contradict Holy Scripture, some of the practices are the sign of the cross.

      @Zachary Trent So with what you have said, would you agree St. Irenaeus view of tradition as he described it to be as the Apostles Creed? It's basically the Gospel, it agrees with Scripture since it's derived from it. Also, tradition consists of customs and practices of the Church, which Scripture doesn't mention but it's not a huge deal.

      That's what Protestants claim, yes, and yet when you cite the unanimous tradition that baptism is how you become born again, that 'doesn't comport with Scripture.' You can't have Tradition judged by Scripture if it comes from the same persons.
      That's why it can't work. Tradition has equal authority because it came from the same authority: the apostles taught, and some wrote, some didn't. What was written was written with chosen words. But not all that was taught was written down. "Hold fast to the things which were handed on to you, whether taught orally or written in one of our epistles."
      What the apostles taught orally might not have - or may even have been - in the words chosen by God. However, their teaching on doctrine to the whole church is most certainly 100% infallible, true, and equally authoritative. Because it is "not the word of men, but the Word of God."

    At 71 years old I have had my share of talks with Protestants. I converted to Catholicism in 1970. But I am weary with all these debates/ arguments. Some three months ago the Mormons came knocking on my door. About three times a year, the Jehovah Witnesses come knocking. My brother is in the Church of Christ and says the Catholic C is an abomination unto God, but he gets into arguments with our Pentecostal relatives. Actually it's simple: Non-Catholic denominations and Catholics are at polar opposites. We have two opposite premises (a starting belief). What is the basis of your belief in Jesus Christ? The non-C says it's a no brainer. Of course the basis is the Bible. What else can there be? The Catholic says it's the church. Only the church has the authority to interpret the Bible. The Bible is a great extension of the church. Centuries ago the non-C grasps the Bible. Holds it up and says - This is our obly authority! The Catholic C says - No, we have the rifht to interpret scripture. So, why we Catholics allow ourselves to have a debate according to non-Catholic (protestant) rules? To prove everything by the Bible. Indeed, all Catholic positions can be proven by the Bible - but often not to the satisfaction of the non-C. We Catholics researve the right ti follow the Catholuc Church's interpretation. It is our starting premise of our faith. We don't need to apologize to the non-C to the point that we get into debates using their rules. Kung Fu fighter and boxer get into the ring. It is announced these two are champions of their sport. The Kung Fu fighter is surprised to learn before the bell that he is only to fight by boxing rules. If the non- C wants to ridicule us by saying we are afraid of the Bible, fine. And if we don't have an answer duri g the debate, fine. We can direct the non-C to books and websites that are better at explaining. Debates are entertaining at best but seldom is there a clear winner, and even if so, the winner is not necessarily right.

      Hey guys, can I first say that Protestants and Catholics are not at war; we actually have much in common. I also think it’s helpful and healthy to find some humor in ourselves. Would you both agree?
      As a Protestant I agree with Trent and find it funny/ironic that many of Mike’s comments could also refute his own stance as Trent pointed out. I must also admit the humor I found in your question “where does it say...” since your position appears to be on the side that you don’t need to know the Bible. It only makes sense that someone arguing against “sola scriptura” would ask that question. I apologize, but I had to laugh out loud at the irony... you have to agree it was cute.
      All joking aside, I’ll give you 3 passages to read. There are many passages that both Catholic and Protestant biblical scholars could give you, but if you read Psalm 119:11, 2 Timothy 2:15, and Acts 17:11 you will find purpose, approval and nobility in studying and knowing God’s Word.
      Lastly, many Protestants don’t have a problem with Peter’s position among the apostles and they often refer to his sermon on the day of Pentecost found in Acts 2. I also find it funny yet encouraging that a lowly fisherman like Peter would preach a sermon so strongly based upon scriptural prophecy from Isaiah 44, Joel 2 and Psalms 110, as well as, from John the Baptist’s preaching “repent and be baptized for the remission of sins” found in verse 38.
      I pray that you find wisdom in the scriptures that will give you firm reason and foundation for your faith and testimony to others. May God richly bless and keep you strong in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

But I listened to Steve Ray's conversion story and I saw many intellectual Protestants converting to Catholicism (Marcus Grodi, Dr. Francis Beckwith, John Henry Newmann, Dr. David Anders, Dr. Scott Hahn, Dr. John Bergsma etc. etc.) When I saw Trent Horn explain how Protestants claims about Catholicism are dead wrong it gave me pause. I couldn't respond to Trent's claims. And Mike Winger cannot respond to Trent's claims. All Winger did was take a small part of what Trent stated and claimed that Trent did not represent Catholic teaching in that one are of minutia. Winger left 99% of what Trent responded with unchallenged. I believe that if one watches all of Trent's videos it will be difficult not to become Catholic. I would also suggest listening to Dr. David Anders on a radio show named "Called to Communion." These fellows do not give one time hit jobs regarding Protestantism, they systematically show where Protestants misrepresent Catholicism and they show you the sources that you can read for yourselves. If you read the bible, you'll see that time and time again, Israel's leaders let the people down. Instead of repenting and ritually cleansing the way God gave them through the priests and the temple, they repeatedly lead the people of God astray; adding to teachings false things, and even worshiping false gods. That's why God exiled them.
      The point is, we can't trust our leaders to always be correct or have the best for us in mind. That's obviously true even just studying the history of the Catholic Church. God knows our limitations, so He gave us HIS WORD so that we may know it, and know Him. He knows we may interpret some things wrong here and there... but His grace is enough to cover that, and may His Spirit correct us and guide us as we follow Him.
      "The Church" is the body of Christ. The body of Believers. If you are a believer, you have The Spirit, and God will reveal truth to you more and more as you seek it through His word. I know this firsthand. But if you sit back, and assume that the Catholic Church knows everything you need to know, so you'll just trust them, well, you will be lead astray, and you wont have the discernment or wisdom needed to even know that you're being lead astray.

      Christian_Gamer_Guy How? If one "body of believers" believes that baptism is one thing and another "body of believers" believes that baptism is the complete opposite they both can't be right. Certainly Christ did not leave us orphaned to flounder around. Therefore as Christ teaches take it to the Church or in the worlds of Saint Paul the Church is the pillar and foundations of truth. With that said, the Church is not a hotel for saints but, a hospital for sinners. Yes, there are bad leaders that doesn't destroy the deposit of faith. Christ guaranteed that the gates of hell will not prevail that doesn't mean the gates of hell won't try. BTW, as human beings we always stress the negative and down play the positive. There are plenty of good leaders in our Church that I look too. Everyone looks at scripture through a lens as you just did. I just prefer to look through the lens as handed down through the centuries to us from Christ and the apostles.

      Christian_Gamer_Guy You are making a big assumption that of the false doctrine of Sola Scriptura. Where does the Bible teach the idea of we believe by the "bible alone"? If Jesus wanted us to believe by the Bible alone why didn't he write anything down? He doesn't even tell his disciples go forth and write manuscripts. Some do but not all. Luke and Mark are not one of the 12 why are they in the Bible? Who made that determination? There wasn't even a printing press for 1500 years after Christ. Bibles were laboriously hand written and very expensive. Very few Bibles were in private hands. It's Martin Luther that gave us Sola Scriptura a doctrine found nowhere in the Bible and a doctrine that has lead to over 50,000 denominations and splintering all claiming they have the correct interpretation of scripture. However I do see where scripture does point to the Church the very Church that collected, protected, canonized, and distributed and properly interpreted by her. For example, how do you know by the Bible alone that John wrote John or Mathew wrote Mathew. Likewise Luke or Mark. The only way we know is because the Church says so. How about the doctrine of the Trinity where is that explicitly taught in scripture? How about marriage between one man and one woman? Where's that in scripture? How about abortion? Where's that in scripture? Stem cell research? I can go on. I know abortion, polygamy etc is wrong because the Church says so. Did you even watch this?

      I wouldn't say that it is pathetic. Instead, i believe that talking to and learning from an educated and well-versed Catholic (like Trent) would have been better than learning "why Catholics are wrong". There have been times when i realized how much nuance, connotation, and detail really matter. And this video is a perfect example of that. I also have realized that i cannot learn about something by watching videos and lectures by the OPPONENTS. Instead, i should first watch such videos from believers/supporters of that something and THEN watch the counter argument.
      The problem, i am afraid, is that one could spend a lifetime and still not know everything. A man or woman could devote years to studying one religion, decades studying other religions, and then centuries comparing and contrasting them to find out which one is right.
      It's just too much. A man has bills to pay, things to learn, jobs to tend, family to care for, and, frankly, life to live. One cannot stop everything and devote his whole life to such an epic quest.
      I think it all boils down to something pretty simple: there is one God who made everything. He sent his only begotten son Yeshua/Joshua/Jesus the Christ who is the Savior of Mankind. The Holy Ghost dwells within believers. Do your best to follow His Law, to be patient and kind, to be humble yet strong, to be an example of a person with standards (or a "goal"). Don't talk about vulgar things, don't belittle people and call them names, don't be a hypocrite, and don't judge people by standards that you, yourself, do not meet because you will be judged by those same standards and you don't want to be a hypocrite with double standards.
      And last but not least, worship God. Praise Him. Honor Him. Do not provoke his wrath. Do not slander his name by mingling it with foul speech. Do not make blasphemous jokes about God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost, or His heralds.

      Protestants want to know the truth. It's tough because we are taught that because Jesus calls himself the Door and the Good Shepherd. These are both metaphors and Jesus is neither an actual door nor is He an actual sheep herder. So it becomes tough when Jesus says bread is His body and wine is His blood. These are metaphors, too. Then, the explanation about accidents is confusing.
      Still, I believe that Jesus is present in Communion or the Eucharist. And there does seem to be more that Jesus and Paul say to indicate that the body and blood of Jesus are the blessed bread and wine.
      Then, we see Jesus giving his blessed mother to John and John alone-- no one else just as Peter and only Peter was given special authority over all the elders. So is the Blessed Virgin Mary our mother? I feel that this is true but Protestants worry about asking Mary--or anyone who has passed on into heaven-- to pray for us. Still, yet I do understand the reason this is fine. But, we are taught to go straight to God through Jesus so as not to be confused about who saves us.
      Also, I get that a statue is ok. However, BOWING to a statue( not merely kissing it) is the actual definition of idolatry. This is a problem.
      Please understand the struggles Protestants do have. We both worship Jesus as Our Saviour. AND WE LOVE OUR CATHOLIC BRETHREN AS YOU LOVE US.

      Sage of Synergism There is much difference between what is dogma (that part of doctrine which has been divinely revealed and which the Church has formally defined and declared to be believed as revealed), doctrine (all Church teaching in matters of faith and morals - unchangeable) and discipline (instruction, system of teaching or of law, given under the authority of the Church [which] can be changed with the approval of proper authority-changeable). It’s really obvious that you have no understanding of the difference. It all matters and is why Jesus instituted His Church and gave the apostles the authority over it rather than telling people they could interpret the teachings for themselves.
      The observance of Lent is a discipline in remembrance of the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert praying. It is in preparation for, and observance of, the “Passion of Christ” - His suffering, death and resurrection. Catholics are not the only ones who practice this.

    At age 40 I began the journey from belief in God...to belief in Christ...to Protestantism (multiple churches)...to Catholicism. Here I add my personal experience to Trent's excellent discussion. Mike Winger attempts to contrast "Protestant Doctrine" to Catholic doctrine. In actuality he is contrasting "Winger Doctrine" to Catholic doctrine. In my 20 years as Protestant, with every new church, I had to try to figure out the particular doctrine of that specific pastor/church. Each individual protestant church has its own Authority and its own Doctrine - set forth by the pastor of that congregation. Winger tries to claim the Bible as Authority. But in reality, it is Winger's interpretation of the Bible that becomes Authority. Thus, the growing number of Protestant churches/denominations all vying for the title "One True Church." Thousands of protestant churches...and...thousands of popes.

    I have been Protestant my whole life and struggled with doubt and anger toward God. Recently after fleeing God for so long I have felt called back. Because I wanted to perform my due diligence, I have really researched everything I think relevant to become secure in my faith; I started with the existence of God and that led to the search for a spiritual home. Eventually I found the Catholic church and have been very happy finding the doctrinal beliefs of the Catholic faith resonate with my ideals. Problem with Protestant mentality is they don't know or can't comprehend the Jewish understanding of the High Priest who sits on the Seat of Moses, which is where the Papacy comes from. So of course there's things that weren't written in excess because the early church was following the traditions of Jewish customs. Dr Brant Pitre did a book but also a talk on the Jewish roots of the papacy, if protestants dared to actually read / look into this in-depth they'd realise the papacy is infact biblical and why the early church didn't have to be explicit in terms.

    Interesting talk, but still respectfully disagree. My biggest gripe with the Roman Catholic Church, they basically say “Jesus isn’t enough for salvation, you need all this these other doctrines and traditions too.” Paul was clear in Galatians, am I pleasing man, or God? If any man gets in the way of you coming to God, wether that be a priest, pastor, elder or whatever, organization or group, then it’s not the gospel. Your salvation is between you and God, and any church or man that would say “you need my approval first.” Is not only unbiblical, but wicked.

    • @LightoverDarkMinistry
      @LightoverDarkMinistry 4 года назад +3

      @Qwerty If Jesus alone isn't enough, why do I need the roman church and it's traditions? Isn't a full trust of Christ alone enough for eternal life? Or, it is Christ plus other stuff is being required?

    • @LightoverDarkMinistry
      @LightoverDarkMinistry 4 года назад +3

      @Qwerty So instead of responding to my question you just insult me? If I'm wrong, then correct me, I'm always open to learn. From your world view, which I can only assume is from a roman catholic perspective, conciliation with God, Is it by Jesus alone, or Jesus +.

    • @LightoverDarkMinistry
      @LightoverDarkMinistry 4 года назад +3

      @Qwerty Firstly, thanks for pointing out I said disrespectfully, I meant respectfully, but this is what happens when you watch youtube at 1 am, my apologies. Let's keep name calling out of it, ad hominems aren't an argument. To your first response, yes, I am learning about it, that's why I listened to the talk, because I like to hear all sides of a debate, so I can learn.
      Do I believe we have a license to sin? No. If I had that attitude I wouldn't love Christ. "If you love me, you'll keep my commandments." Anyone who's a follower of Christ, who's believed and been reconciled through faith, has a new self, and doesn't want to keep on sinning, out of love for Christ and a desire for righteousness. 1 John 3 and many of Paul's letters are extremely clear in his letter's, since we've been freed from, then we shouldn't be living in or practicing sin.
      Do I think the Bible is necessary. Yes. How else do we come to know God? If I want to know him, I want to know what he said, and what others said about him. We test truth with scripture as the foundation.
      Also I never said the sacraments arn't needed, Baptism, the Eucharist, these are Biblical and we are commanded by God to do so.
      My question again, asking a presumably catholic, I am a sinner, what must I do to be saved?

    • @LightoverDarkMinistry
      @LightoverDarkMinistry 4 года назад +2

      @Qwerty Thanks for responding, see I would agree, to a certain extent. But see, this is my issue, "sacramentally ordained priests that administer the sacrament, (body and blood of Christ.) So now there's a man, that I have to get through, to come to Christ. Now I have to seek the approval of men in order to receive full salvation. That might seem like a small thing, but it's not the gospel and Paul warns us about that. When the jailer in Acts 16: 30 asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” In Ephesians 1:13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise. Or Romans 10:9 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. Baptism, communion, fellowship with other believers, these are responses from obedience Because we are saved, not to be saved. No practice or tradition can make us reconsidered to God, only faith in Christ.
      The thief on the cross, neither baptized nor took communion, but recognized who Jesus was, repented of his sins, and called Jesus his Lord. Jesus in turn promises him paradise, that day. That is the faith that was once and for all delivered to the saints. It's saying I am incomparable of reconciling myself to God, that's only something God did himself, and finished it on the cross.
      The early Roman church was a blessing, as were the early fathers, but believe it went astray, and the Roman church began preaching a different gospel and focused on man made traditions more than God's truth.

      @@LightoverDarkMinistry You seemed confused. Ill give you two analogy to differentiate Redemption from Salvation.
      Jesus died for all men this is redemption, he redeemed the world. do you agree? If you agree that REDEMPTION IS FOR ALL then we move on and i have a another question.
      Supposed there are only 2 types of people on earth, sinners and true christians. Since Jesus redeemed the world, are the two type of people going to be saved or is it only the christians? I guess you would say that the christians would be save but not the sinners.. So what DID THE CHRISTIANS DO TO BE SAVED? What WORK DID THEY DO TO BE SAVED? They must have done something in order to be saved, right? So in this essence, even though redemption is for all, salvation is a choice each person has to make.
      Now here is another analogy that best explains eph 2:8-10. Supposed am God and you are a man.. Am good and because I love you i will give you a gift..lets call this gift eternal life..you dont have to do anything to earn it, it is a gift from me to you. But you still have to trust me for you to open your hand to accept that gift, right? You believe in me and then you open your hand is work! This is called faith and baptism, the initial stage of salvation process
      And for this gift to be in your hand always, you have to keep holding it..holding is a work..you have to keep working because now you are created in Jesus to do good works or you can just throw that gift away by commiting mortal sins because you dont want to hold it anymore, with that you have just thrown the gift of eternal life. But then you realized you really wanted that gift and ask me to give it back to you..this is reconciliation or confession. Through the course of your life by your own freewill you ask me to give you the gift, and you also throw it away time and again. But of course there will come a time that i will have enough of what you are doing so I will just respect whatever you want, if you want the gift in your hand or not, i will respect that. When will that be? On the day of your death, judgement will come..if you are holding the gift of eternal life when you die, that gift will be yours forever or if you have thrown your gift when you die, you have lost it forever.
      Does any of what I said make sense???

      When people share the gospel truth it's because they care. Peter NEVER went to Rome as Catholic tradition claims.
      Every time they meant Rome, they said Rome, except in Revelation, when God gave to John visions of the future.
      Symbolism is used throughout that book, because of its content about the Pagan Roman Empire and its future collapse. So, many symbols were used because it spoke of the fall of the Empire and Emperors, which by the way, is also where the seat of the Beast/Whore/ Harlot church would gain power and rise up after that system .
      The one and only time Babylon is used is by Peter, and it was Babylon, Egypt not Rome. If Paul, who became one of the apostles at a later time, and who was the strongest opponents against paganism, said Rome in his epistles, common sense says Peter would have no problem saying Rome either. So stop believing the lies. God is NOT the author of confusion!
      Many protestant churches have been corrupted. The Harlot has her many "daughters" as God's word says, and are under the judgment of God, not all, but many.
      COME OUT OF HER, GOD SAYS. Rev. 18:4
      The Catholic Church's false claim stand and fall on those two beliefs... that Peter "supposedly" was the rock the church was built on, yet, the church is the "body of Christ, not the body of "Peter" a mere man.
      The bible clearly says in many, many places that Christ was and is that ROCK.
      The Roman Catholic Church stands or falls on two false doctrines.... Peter being who Christ actually was, and the ridiculous claim that Peter went to Rome and became a pope! Lies, Lies lies!!
      In Acts 17 Paul says the Bereans were more noble, BECAUSE THEY SEARCHED THE SCRIPTURE...." They didn't go ask any "church fathers" is this so? NO! they dug in to see if what Paul taught was true.
      Paul never called himself a "Father of the Church." He felt as a father toward Timothy, whom he'd known as a youth, and Titus etc. but NEVER TOOK and held a blasphemous title of Holy Father." NO ONE went any Apostle and said, " Father forgive me, for I have sinned!" Get to studying or continue your blasphemous beliefs! Your choice!!

    You either believe what God says, or you believe yourself instead. The only way you can understand the Bible is if you have received the author, the Holy Spirit. The only way you can receive the Holy Spirit is to obey the gospel that saves - the gospel of this church age (1 Cor 15:1-4)- you have to trust it. Most people, especially Protestants, only believe it in vain. They have not become born again, even though they may often hear the preaching of the gospel! It is because they have not applied it to themselves personally. They are still blind. They too, are in it for pleasing men, not God! No church can save you - only Jesus Christ! It's a personal relationship with Him - God draws you to Him if you surrender your beliefs and humbly ask God to open your understanding. Myself, I had to surrender my pride in my good works. I asked God to forgive my UNBELIEF and that is when the Holy Spirit began to minister to me. It's a miracle!!! He lead me to understanding the scriptures better and that I need to trust what happened at the cross and that there is no other way God can forgive my sins!!! Salvation has nothing to do with your perfect church attendance! If you need an institution (or any religion) to interpret the Bible for you, then you are spiritually dead and on your way to hell. That is not fruit of the Spirit. The reason why most people do not receive the Holy Spirit is because they are spiritually blind to God's Word. They do not believe it for what it says. They PREFER to have a learned-council that uses logic and philosophy to come up with doctrine. God is not in that!!! Remember, God gives grace to the humble. He does not help the "wise". Fools tend to have a better chance! Jesus wants us to come to Him and believe on Him (John 6:35) like AS a little child (not when you are an infant.) Children are more apt to trust God more than adults. I was blind and deaf until age 38 when I read the scriptures and as painful as it was to consider it to be true, I finally surrendered and got saved - all by myself because the Holy Spirit drew me to God. God will not save the prideful and rebellious. You can appear holy to men but God knows your heart. A lot of "good people" are in hell. The sinners who repented and obeyed God are in heaven. You see? What the world says is good or evil is way different than what God says!!! Please, I warn you, please consider this! If you can't understand God's word, then ask God to minister to you. He hearkens to a humble and contrite heart! Not to a heart that seeks to prove your personal beliefs are correct! Jesus called the Pharisees the blind leaders of the blind. If this makes you fuming angry, please know the devil hates comments like mine. The "old me" would have hated this comment - I was loaded with devils even though the world saw me as a "saint". God delivered me of devils when I received His Spirit! I give Him all the praise and glory!!!

    "No one reading these passages would come to the conclusion that the papacy was true." Actually, it was studying passages like that closely while I was a Protestant that pushed me towards Catholicism.
    Why?
    Looking back at the end of John's gospel, Christ says "MY sheep." How many of the sheep belong to Christ?
    All of them. The whole world is Christ's flock.
    So when Christ tells Peter specifically to feed His sheep, that encompasses the whole Church.
    It's also in Matthew how Christ doesn't merely give Peter the key to Heaven, but gives Him the authority to bind and loose laws in Heaven--that's an insane amount of power. No one else in the Bible is given the authority to bind and loose laws in Heaven except Peter and then the rest of the apostles, and we see the apostles swiftly acting to appoint successors in Acts, which shows us where bishops came from.

    In acts 15, Peter literally didn’t end the debate! Paul and Barnabas continued. Then James decided, not Peter! Trent is twisting what it says. There is nothing there that says the others believed Peter made a dogmatic infallible statement. James clearly didn’t think so, Paul and Barnabas didn’t think so.

    When I was Protestant going to a bible church it always kinda made me wonder why the ancient Hebrews had a very distinct and elaborate way of worshiping God and my Sundays felt so distant from that. Every Protestant church I've attended felt distant from that.
    Its funny because if you look at the Catholic church, it's set up almost in the same manner as the Hebrews were set up. You have the laymen which is much like the regular Jewish people, you have the priesthood which is like the Levites and then the High Priest is like the Pope. The biggest difference is the manner in which sin is delt with...
    The question I'd have for someone that doesn't think Catholics are correct is why would your sect be correct that probably doesn't look anything like the old system?

    I'm new to all this so I have a relatively untainted view from bias.
    Its pretty hard to look at every verse and argument for the Papacy in union as a complete case and argue against.
    Its easy to take single lines from the bible and argue they don't make the case for the Papacy, because thats obvious. A line that accounts for 1% of the Papal argument obviously does not "make the case" on its own. Without its proper placement and context, it doesn't sound like much of anything.
    I do not find it ironic that efforts to argue against the Catholic understanding very much rely on singling out arguments rather than facing the entire position of biblical passages, historical context, anthropological context, linguistic context, geographical context and culturual context.
    The argument is made by the overlapping of all of these things giving the fullest representation of the point. The protestant argument against it always seems to be more of a guerrilla warfare type hit and run on bits and pieces of it.
    As I slowly move being Christian, I lean strongly Catholic after a brief protestatnt stint. Though some great protestant figures helped along the way like Winger, and Dr. Frank Turek. They just seem to fall off on the full picture in all its glorious context.

      The Apostolic and Ante-Nicene Fathers added many traditions and beliefs in the second, third centuries. Example: Ignatius taught that Mary was "ever-virgin." They changed the way a reunion service was conducted. Ignatius made sure they had an "altar and a cup." One single bishop to head the church instead of several. I can go on and on.

    I won't mention all of his faulty arguments, but one of the worst and most common I hear is the "the Bible doesn't use the word pope!" is among the silliest. There are a lot of words Christians of all stripes ascribe to being properly in line with Christian doctrine that aren't in the Bible.

    At 6:00 minutes you mention “the development of doctrine” as one of the beliefs about catholic authority. However when those doctrines clearly diverge from the teachings and revelations given by Jesus and the Apostles in the New Testament it is false doctrine at best, heresy at worst. When Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the father but by me.” , Did he secretly mean not only through me but through Mary and through priests ordained by the Roman Catholic Church ? Or did Jesus get it wrong ?
    When you add to the Gospel it is no longer the gospel but “another gospel” as Paul warned the Galatians in Gal 1:8

      @@jamescorbett8261 then why do you pray “Hail Mary full of Grace”? Grace is only given by God through Jesus Christ, not Mary. It is Jesus who is full of Grace and we should Hail the King of Kings.
      If you personally believe that Jesus is where the buck stops on salvation, then that is great. However that’s not what the Catholic Church teaches as is evident in the prayers they give to Mary and the doctrines of Sacriment.
      When John the Apostle gives us a vision of the throne room of God in Revelation, Mary is not there. Jesus is there with the Father and the Spirit.

      @@nicklandry8019 The Gospel of Luke. The Archangel Gabriel greeted Mary with the salutation, “Hail, full of grace” (Luke 1:28). She was filled with God-given grace, and it is He Who exalts Her. Mary is not divine, nor is She a part of the Holy Trinity; however, She has a singularly unique relationship with the Trinity: She is Daughter of the Father, Mother of the Son, and Spouse of the Holy Spirit.
      Mary’s role, in both Her earthly life and in eternity, could best be described as that of a Queen Mother. In Old Testament times, a Queen Mother possessed considerable power and stature within the kingdom. A Jewish king had many wives, but only one mother, who acted as his chief counselor. Mary, as the Mother of the King of Kings, was no different.
