    Valid points but Im a serious kayak tournament angler, I have a motor for long hauls, pedal drive for shorter distances plus my paddle for shallow, weedy or tight to maneuver areas. I find all three have their time and place. I find I use the pedal drive the most when Im fishing in deeper water and I have wind or current pushing me, the pedal drive allows me to keep myself in one spot while having my hands free.

      Nice I will be getting one one day but for now I got my sit inside. It's serving me well in skinny water I can glide over 6 inches of water. While the guy with the peddle drive has to portage or get out. It's cool though when he dropped that drive down wish I was that cool.

    Your tip over at the end demonstrated my biggest gripe with virtually all late model fishing kayaks; the seats are WAY too high, which raises the center of gravity. To compensate, the mfg’s bloat the hull design into a pseudo pontoon boat and we end up with 12’ x 36” tanks with ridiculously poor handling. Guys become convinced they need a pedal drive because that’s the only way to get those barges to move through the water.

    I went back and forth on a prop drive or fin drive and I'm so happy I went with fin drive... I never have to pull my drive out in shallow water because the fins tuck right to the bottom of my boat (that's HUGE when fishing) I keep a small single paddle for when I need to hook a wall or do a sharp spin... I did 13 miles of nonstop run and gun fishing yesterday, I was a decent workout after mile 6 but the fin drive is adjustable for torque or speed (another reason the fin drive is better than prop)..... My average speed is 2.8mph (comfortable speed) 4.4mph in short burst if I need to get out of the way of a boat (not maintainable) ... I personally would never go back to a paddle or swap to a prop.... Most important is FIND A HULL DESIGN THAT ISN'T TIPPY, I can stand and fish for hours with zero fear of falling or rolling....

    I bought a Jackson Cruise FD back in February. I too live in MN. I find myself fishing with the prop flipped up a lot as well but my thing is, what does that matter? When I want to move to another spot, I feel I get there with little effort while peddling. Yes, I have used the paddle more than I thought I would but I'm ok with that. I do have to say that if I were to do it all over again, I think I would just get a paddle yak but now that I have a peddle yak, I don't see a reason to get rid of it since I know I'll lose money if I trade it in. It's a personal preference thing for sure. One last thing, the weight is a big deal. The Cruise is one of the lighter peddle yaks out there and it's still heavy. I load mine in my truck and it isn't as easy as I want it to be after a day of fishing. Anyway, I hope this helps someone looking to buy.

    I prefer a pedal drive over paddle.
    1. Hands free
    2. Cover more water
    3. Instant reverse in pedal (brands: Native, feel free, Jackson, etc.)
    4. Hobie has fin pedal system where you don’t have to clear out the weeds/grass.
    I own a paddle kayak for a year and there’s some benefits to it but it doesn’t suit mystyle of fishing. After using my buddy Topwater 106 on the lake; I realized I needed to get a pedal drive kayak. It’s going to be heavier but it will definitely benefit my style of fishing.

An anchor for when you find the fish, you can just tie something heavy to the yak. I've used it on small water and big lakes. I've loved it, the pedals will click so if it bothers you, you will want to get some silicon spray for lubrication. Also, I’ve heard that the Old Town PDL 120 has a very efficient drive compared to the Hobie in terms of cruising speed. However, for pure torque and short speed bursts the Hobie is pretty much the fastest pedal drive for a kayak. I’ve heard they’re a little pricey but the quality is great and they’re always trying to innovate their design. Shallow pedaling is definitely a pro but I’ve also heard that maintenance is much more expensive on the Hobie’s due to their fins being so expensive. I own neither and never been on a kayak so I’m going based on the research I’ve been doing on RUclips… not very scientific but it’s all I got. He says weight is a reason. He removed the seat before he put his kayak on the roof , you would also remove the drive making it the same weight. You can steer backwards in my pedal drive so no issue there. Super thick weed just raise the drive. He is correct you can position youself easier with a paddle but you cant fish with a paddle in you hands. I just switch to pedal drive and it is a huge advantage. I can rig up on my way to my spot, control cuurent with out an anchor, have both hands to fish is a game changer. I still paddle at times but 95% of the time i am using the drive.

    I am 65 and have had several paddle kayaks, all SOT, used for lake and inshore fishing and river floating. I will soon buy my first pedal kayak and plan to go with the Native or Hurricane 12’ since they are the lightest and easiest for me to handle. The pedal kayak will do the following for me: cover more water with less effort (use those big leg muscles and save my paddling arms), hands-free forward and reverse when fishing and being able to keep a fishing position while in wind and current. I find those are my biggest challenges now with a straight paddle kayak.

    • @RiverRatsTotalOutdoors
      @RiverRatsTotalOutdoors  4 года назад +1

      I would suggest to try before you buy, they are not nearly as maneuverable as you would think, you need water to be moving over the rudder to turn which means you need to be moving, going straight forward or back is easier but as far as maneuvering for fishing I find a paddle way easier. And as far as covering water I personally find it easier paddling, the peddle systems are slow and cumbersome imho

  • @firstnamelastname9013

    Most common one for you freshwater and inland water guys is weeds and the draft and all good points I'm sure an efficient paddle stroke for a seasoned paddler is more natural over a longer distance. I have a seastream angler 120 pd mostly coastal, but we have a fast run of tide, and it handles it with ease but in the same place with the 14" paddle i am working hard to tread water at times. If i was on flatter water without the tide i would take the paddle and the main reason is deck space and most people never mention it. The space to work on your bait and rigs on a console not undoable on a peddle and if you only spin not such an issue but worth considering also the rails on a peddle need to be clear of your legs or they are almost useless. Fair play for leaving the end in it happens. 👏👏👍👍

I am on the same page about pedal drive, too heavy for what it's worth. The later models went up to 70lb but mine is older and closer to 50lb which is perfect to load on a truck or car. I have a Helix 5, crate on the back, and peddle controlled rudder that I've added. My only complaint is the seat being low and sitting in water half the time. I'm always looking for replacement ideas.

    I agree 100%. Very shallow water is an issue too. My neighbor has a peddle kayak and i have a padle. When we enter a very shallow creek he has to completly pull his pedddle unit out before he can get in the creek. Fast moving water piles a lot of sand at the entrance and he would always get stuck.....have to get out of his boat and drag it over the sand. Other people say you can get going to where you want to go faster, but the difference between hm and I going to the same spot with is maybe 3/4 of a mile is maybe 2 minutes. Wouldn't suprise me at all that he got a new boat over the winter.

    Great video! Kudos for leaving the flip in! I left mine in on one of my vids, too, and then incorporated it into another! L I only had experience with paddle kayaks until I lost a big fish last year that I probably would've landed in a pedal kayak...I started researching, I wanted a propeller drive, for the instant reverse, but it would not be my primary kayak, as most of the water I fish is super shallow with a good bit of current and obstructions, and a paddle kayak is just better suited for that, so I wanted a pedal drive that was affordable, too. I ended up with a Hammerhead Kayaks Bull Shark, almost unique in that the propeller drive and a fin drive are interchangeable on the same boat, and so far I love it! The fin drive was only another $400 after dropping $1500 for the Bull Shark with the propeller drive, and I'm still out the door for about 2/3 or half the cost of some higher end boats that only use one type of drive or the other. My paddle only Pelican Catch 120 is still my goto kayak most of the time, but I'm definitely not mad about it when I decide I need the pedal drive for this trip or that one. In fact, I currently have trips planned that I'll be using the Pelican on, and I have trips planned specifically to take advantage of the pedal drive offered by the Bull Shark. Oh, and as a side note: the Bull Shark is only 62 lbs without the drive...6 lbs less than my Pelican. Stay safe!

    if you get on a bike, even for short distances a couple days a week, you might be able to build those pedal muscles up within a couple months. i'm not a super serious cyclist or anything like that, i just ride a few miles casually every 2-3 days, but i've been doing that for years so i can keep pedaling even when i'm pooped after longer rides. if that's something you'd be interested in, you might even be able to pick up a stationary bike for free or cheap somewhere and give that a go. i imagine you don't care since you sold your pedal kayak, but thought i'd mention it.

    First a tip for RRTOD... You are way too high on that yak! Get a marker bouey and set it somewhere loose on your yak so WHEN you roll it, you'll know where all your stuff sank!
    On with my comments...
    I recently got a pedal kayak... I learned very quickly... it's to get you from point A to point B very quickly. They are NOT very meneuverable.
    I learned also that they are pretty fast but if you are not a bike rider or used to PEDALLING. DO NOT RUN IT HARD FOR VERY LONG!! You'll regret it later on with severe cramps in your legs...SEVERE!!!
    I'm 60 yrs old and weigh 230 pounds and not in the greatest of shape but not out of shape either.
    The pedal kayaks are cumbersome and heavy but like anything else you just have to accept it and learn how to load, unload and use it.
    I did spend more time with my Paddle in my hands aside from when I was trolling.

    I’m getting a Brooklyn PKC 12 pedal kayak because I want to do saltwater fishing with it. I can effectively fish without having to paddle when casting to the grass and can just go in a straight line no problem. I also want to go to the first and second Bowie and fish the jetties where I live with it too offshore. There is a spot about 300 yards off of the jetties where it’s a crazy drop off and I’ve heard of a bunch of fish around it. Boats are always slaying over there. And about 200 yards from the jetties is a hole with tons of rocks which hold a bunch of reds so I want a pedal so I can get out there happy instead of being drenched from paddling for 20 minutes

    The number 1 reason to buy a peddle kayak is trolling. Watch any video of a peddle running 2 poles at a time and you'll see why. I went kokanee fishing yesterday and it was hot fishing but a ton of very small kokes so I had to stop and reel in every time a micro koke got hooked and the other line with a dodger fell to the bottom so I had to reel that on in too pain in the butt. Would not have to stop with a peddle kayak. Another reason for a peddle is down riggers again you not have to stop to let it go.

  • @thehalfbakedkid
    @thehalfbakedkid 4 года назад

    Pedal kayaks are designed to cover more water without fatiguing your arms so you can fish for longer. Idk about you, but if I've been kayaking down a river and fishing for several hours, the last thing I want to do is paddle up river against the current and destroy my arms and back. As for maneuverability, why dont you just use a paddle when in shallow/weeded areas and pull up the pedal drive? Even with the drive in, there is still plenty of room to stand in and even turn around if need be depending on what make and model you get. As for weight, they don't necessarily weigh any more than a normal top water paddle kayak when you take the drive out, which I would assume most people don't transport their kayaks with the drive installed. Just purchased the old town top water 120 pdl and it weighs 2lbs less than my emotions stealth pro angler paddle kayak. I use a trailer now to transport them, so I don't need to worry about lifting it on my car.
    Conclusion: pedal kayaks are just as good if not better. The minimal effort to pull up the drive in shallow and weedy areas is not a big deal at all. They cover more water with less fatigue and leave your hands free. You also still have the option to use a paddle if you want to with a pedal kayak.

    • @RiverRatsTotalOutdoors
      @RiverRatsTotalOutdoors  4 года назад +1

      Ok that's your opinion, most lakes and rivers I fish you would have the drive up 90% of the time if you get to put it down at all. I also never go down river, always up, but that's just me. And as far as the drive is out of your way, you must have a different opinion of what out of your way is, they are always in your way. To each his own but I will stick with my paddle, you can declare what ever you want but my opinion differs

    Well done with some good points. The operative word is "lake". Those who fish where waters are swift, tides coming in or going out etc. will find a pedal kayak well worth it; you can't paddle to keep yourself in position and fish at the same time. I was going to suggest the Pelican Bass Raider 10e which costs 1/3 of the price of some pedal kayaks, is more stable and roomy but requires a motor (electric or gas). However after buying one new and owning it for 2 years I CANNOT recommend it because 1) water accumulates between the "clam shell" hulls and is a PITA to get out and, although Pelican states "stainless steel" fasteners are used, the staples holding the upper and lower halves are rusting like crazy and 2) lousy i.e. non-existent warranty support.

    I keep thinking I want a pedal kayak. But the 3 reasons I havent dont it yet are 1.) Cost. I bought a Lifetime Yukon kayak new on sale for $400 and actually really like it. Its more stable then the Jackson Cuda I had. And very comfortable to fish in for hours. 2.) I love having a bunch of open deck space in front of me and I know the pedals would be in my way a lot. And 3.) I also bass fish everytime I fish. So I spend a lot of my time in really shallow water or in weeds and lilly pads. In fact one lake I fish is covered in 70-75 percent lilly pads in the summer. So really Im not sure how much Id ever use the pedals? And I dont really want them in my way when I cant use them. My main reason for wanting one is just on windier days really. But I have a hard time justifying spending $1500 or more for something I may not end up using much.
