How cool was it that Steve played Skynyrd cover tunes in his sets cause he love the music and then one day to audition for them and get the job before he could walk off stage.... now that is a story that not too many guitar players can say to this day... not many if any at all.... Steve with them crawdad fingers.... incredible!!!

Yeah, Cassie got hired first , she was a professionally trained singer, she begged Ronnie to take a listen to her brother , Steve Gaines, and Ronnie liked Steve's music and hired him. Billy Powell was a roadie /crew member, Ronnie overheard Billy playing Freebird on piano and hired him into the actual band and told him, ' do you know how to play rock & roll?' Billy I believe said, 'no' ( as Billy was a trained pianist on classical piano, but Ronnie put him under his wing and southern rock spell, none better then Lynyrd Skynyrd and it's band members!

The one thing that always intrigues me. The Skynyrd boys weren't even sure the guy could play. Remember they said that they would "turn him off" if he wasn't any good in K.C.? How could they not have heard these recordings with Cassie in the band?

Such a tragic loss of an outstanding musician. Such a loss of a great talent, along with Ronnie and his sister and Artemus

I appreciate putting all these up. What I asked is you title it appropriately as the band is Crawdad. I get people wouldn’t know the name and the know Steve but maybe consider Steve Gaines and the Crawdad band? I’m sure I’m not the only person that feels this way. The band made the music. It was a once in a lifetime group of guys. Two left. Berg and my Dad ❤

Steve & Ronnie had huge plans they would've taken over the Rock & Roll world. They had plans to co-write alot of music with Steve taking the reins at lead vocal would've been awesome RIP SKYNYRD
