He would be a musical legend if he had not died at 28 years old. Every song and recording is an example of his and the true music skills of Crawdad. Rest In Peace Steve you all missed and rememberd
Damn, Steve Gaines has such a great voice and such a smokin guitar player..What a Shame is a total understatement...RIP Steve, Cassie and all the Freebirds who flew on
How cool was it that Steve played Skynyrd cover tunes in his sets cause he love the music and then one day to audition for them and get the job before he could walk off stage.... now that is a story that not too many guitar players can say to this day... not many if any at all.... Steve with them crawdad fingers.... incredible!!!
Yeah, Cassie got hired first , she was a professionally trained singer, she begged Ronnie to take a listen to her brother , Steve Gaines, and Ronnie liked Steve's music and hired him. Billy Powell was a roadie /crew member, Ronnie overheard Billy playing Freebird on piano and hired him into the actual band and told him, ' do you know how to play rock & roll?' Billy I believe said, 'no' ( as Billy was a trained pianist on classical piano, but Ronnie put him under his wing and southern rock spell, none better then Lynyrd Skynyrd and it's band members!
Just found his solo and i can't agree more. L.S. was basically as good as it gets for live shows but Steve's stuff is impeccable especially for 1 person writing
I have been very fortunate to hang out with and learn licks from cats who played with Steve in Crawdad. The man's soul lives on through his teachings. I am currently passing some of this on to my son who is 16 and is enjoying some of Steves creations as well...pay it forward, it's what Steve would have wanted!

What a talent he was, holy shit. I've listened to Skynyrd my whole life, but I am just now discovering Steve Gaines solo stuff. Its no wonder Ronnie Van Zant was so in awe of this guy. Supreme talent, taken way too early RIP.
I see musicians today just shred for flash without making much musical sense, but every note Steve plays makes musical sense...and he could shred; so could Allen and Gary.
You want to talk about pure raw talent, just Wow!! This cat had it all, and then some. And that voice!! I still feel so horribly sad for he and Cassie. Brother and sister, just so, so heart breaking. I pray they both knew the Lord as their Saviour!!
@CerpinTaxt1983 He was incredible, no doubt. It would have been great to see him, Collins, and Rossington together for about 10 more years. They were on a fast track to be the #1 band in the world, I FIRMLY believe that. Gaines absolutely COMPLETED Skynyrd!
It would have been groundbreaking. Like nothing you had ever heard before. It's right up there with wondering how for instance how Hendrix would've sounded had he lived longer, or Randy Rhoads or SRV. It eats at you what could've been. Steve Gaines would've catapulted huge into greatness had he lived, no doubt.
In 77', right after the Street Survivors album was recorded and before the plane crash, Steve was about to take over the guitar world as the best player in the world, he was so good that Gary and Allen were fearing they'd lose their jobs to him. Who knows, if he had not perished in the crash, he might be the best player of all time today.
Rossington and Collins wasn't going anywhere..Rossington was co founder of the band for one..but...both Rossington and Collins said that Mr.Gaines took them to another level of play..

Just awesome. Hard not to be sad thinking of what could have been if not for a plane crash.
Such a natural player of impeccable feel like a Mick Taylor.
I hear him to be more technically precise, like Roy Buchanan ... or Alex Lifeson. Mick Taylor is exceptionally fluid, maybe even more than Jimmy Page.
