  • The Broad Black Brimmer - Art McMillen (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
"The Broad Black Brimmer" is an Irish Republican folk song most commonly attributed to Art McMillen.
The song tells the story of a boy whose father died before he was born, fighting in the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The boy's mother ask him to try on his father's old uniform and as he does so, she tells him about his father and his exploits in the IRA. The title of the song refers to the wide brimmed hat worn by many IRA guerrillas in the 1920s Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War. The song also makes mention of a Sam Browne belt, britches, a trench coat and a holster - all commonly associated with the IRA of that era.
    Lyrics:
There's a uniform that's hanging in what's known as fathers room
A uniform so simple in it's style
It's got no braid of gold, nor silk, nor hat with feathered plume
Yet me mother has preserved it all the while
One day she made me try it on, a wish of mine for years
This in memory of your father Sean she said
And when I put the sam brown on, she was smiling through her tears
As she placed the broad black brimmer on my head
It's just a broad black brimmer with ribbons frayed and torn
By the careless whisk of manys about a breeze
An old trench coat that's so battle-stained and worn
And breeches almost threadbare at the knees
A sam brown belt with a buckle big and strong
And a holster that's been empty manys a day (but not for Long)
But when men claim Ireland's Freedom
The one should choose to lead them
Will wear the broad black brimmer of the IRA
It was the uniform be worn by my father long ago
When he reached me mother's homestead on the run
It was the uniform be worn in that little church below
When 'oul father mac, he blessed the pair as one
And after truce and treaty and the parting of the ways
He wore it when he marched out with the rest (and the best)
And when they bore his body down on that rugged heather braes
They placed the broad black brimmer on his chest
It's just a broad black brimmer with ribbons frayed and torn
Made the careless whisk of manys a mountain breeze
An old trench coat that's so battle-stained and worn
And breeches almost threadbare at the knees
A sam brown belt with a buckle big and strong
And a holster that's been empty manys a day (but not for Long)
But when men claim Ireland's Freedom
The one should choose to lead them
Will wear the broad black brimmer of the IRA

i couldn't remember this songs name for years.
After a day of work on the farm my father would pull it up on RUclips. Old black and white picture's would fill the t.v. that hung an the wall and he would sit his chair. This was back before a grew up, back when the world was simple. i have been trying to remember what it was called and when i herd it again after all these years i lost it, I cried.
I was crying so hard i am sure my neighbors heard. I miss my father so much but sadly we have grown apart. I just wanna go back to the days when I was so young just a boy really. Where I would sit by my dads desk and listen to this song.
Hearing the lyrics has even reminded me of my grandpa's WW2 uniform in the closet next to my dads old dress blues. i just wanna go home.
i know my emotion to this song comes from a different place then the Irish i still love it and it the song of 2 hero's in my family

Thats the reason you yanks are known to be traitoring bastards, shame your ancestors fuked off when the going got tough, instead of having that fight as you call it for their homeland, and another thing why would any of your merican countrymen have any trust or respect for you, with that sort of attitude, the country that gave you and your forebares everything to lead to you, a man who knows no irish culture or even seen the land his ancestors so quickly turned their backs on, believe me it dont impress the irish with these sentiments, maybe in boston youll get the knees up, over there youll more than likely get it in the knee..for taking the piss.

Reminds me a little bit of the American national anthem, in some sections.
(I'm talking strictly about the tune and execution of the music. I am not well versed in irish politics, so I have no idea who was right or wrong in whatever war this is referencing.)

    Little curiosity:
Are you actually European? I've noticed your "R" rolling, and you sure like singing IRA rebel songs.
    Regardless, very nicely done.

I am not, from the states. But listening to Irish songs means I’ve picked up the accent when singing these tunes.

Ahh that makes sense. I should've figured that. I tend to adopt a Russian accent when I used to sing Russian folk songs with my friend's russian immigrant family.
If I may make a song suggestion:
Daughter of the Sea/ Warbringers: Jaina by by Logan Laflotte and Neal Acree
I know it's no IRA rebel song, but I think that'd be amazing for you to sing.

It's truly heart breaking that the Irish managed to fight near 1,000 years to preserve their traditions and culture only for it to die quietly, in the night, after less than a decade of mass "diversity."

When the song refers to a "holster that has been empty many a day", I always thought it meant it was empty because the gun was in use. But a lyric I hear in this version says, "not for long" which implies the holster has been empty because there was no gun to fill it, but not for long. Anyone have any insight?

    • @MuayThai_Don
      @MuayThai_Don Год назад +1

The outfit was his father's but his father died, "in memory of your father" implies this, so naturally if he's dead the outfit and holster has not been used for a good while. The "not for long" line implies he's going to follow his father footsteps

    • @bluebird3281
      @bluebird3281 Год назад

      @@MuayThai_Don I am pretty sure the holster that has been emptied many a day was that the gun was in use by his father. The "not for long" line I've never heard except for this version. So, if the word is "empty" I owe you a beer, if the word is "emptied" you owe me a twelve pack. You should have never let me set the terms of the bet, but what's done is done. ( ;

The gun is being stored elsewhere, or absent. Not a good idea to store a gun in a holster, unless it's a day carry.
