Weather you've done it a few times or just new to the game, the Winch can be one of your most valuable recovery tools. But they are also incredibly tricky and dangerous to use if not done right.
Here’s the correct way to use your winch with the following must have winch products: A tree trunk protector, rated bow shackle, an air damper, and of course a winch.
Here's the ultimate guide to winching by Mad Matt so you can do it like a pro.

I think most of us 4wheelers are beginner's,you very rarely see people like myself practice winching. For me those blankets are useless when a shackle let's go,l prefer to take some Telstra rope and secure the shackle and any other recovery device that may fly at you. Finding the right spot for the safety rope is the tricky part.

Why use a bow shackle through a tree trunk when you already have a hook? the loops will go through the hook no problem. Dont need an extra metal object in there. Dont do that.

100% agree mate. Only less piece of metal to kill you if shit goes pear shaped.

Metal on metal. First rule I learnt in climbing and rigging anchors was don't put metal on metal

@@bradbaston7186 Its just an extra item that isnt needed. 100% pointless . Thats all im saying for sure. Why add more to it when its not necessary

Always enjoy watching a MM video. Learned a lot over the years. The only difference from what I would do, is that I normally hook up instead of down and even if I'm using synthetic rope when I'm working with any hooks, pins and things I always have gloves on. Stay safe on the trails.

Thank you for your video - the only thing I’ve heard that was different here is that you’re suppose to hook the cable to the D shackle from underneath so the cable/force would hit into the ground instead of flying into the air

Quite sure. Somebody has asked this already after winching. U said winch for a minute, then you say it let the batteries recover. How long is the batt recovery time?

The tree trunk protector also makes sure that the tree is alive for the next time you need it. If it's ring-barked & dead its not good to you..... so it's not only about being "Green" it's also about being selfish.

Never hook down. Always hook up. A lot of wrong procedures here mate

et me put a lot of people straight
a single pully to the anchor and back to winch, DOUBLES the load, to get a 4 to one advantage it you need two double sheave pulleys , do yourself a favour, get two double sheeve blocks with the biggest sheeves, 20 x the rope diameter is used, but that's impractical, use 10,mm SPECTRA rope or kevlar braid, you'll accommodate more line on the drumSpectra / Dyneema Rope a ya know zilch fella

Why wouldn’t you just put the winch hook straight on the tree truck protector? Just an extract piece of metal that doesn’t need to be their

dont add metal components to the system, the hook itself would of been enough to connect to the tree protector.

t why use another bow shackle on the tree trunk protector. Seems like an unnecessary bit of shrapnel in case of a breakage.
I have fuck all recovery knowledge so im not having a dig, it just seems dangerous

The 2 ends of the tree strap and 1 end of the winch line creates a triaxial load at the connection. The hook does well along one axis but if one of those strap ends gets close to the tip of the hook or even the gate, that is not so great. The bow shackle closes the tree trap and provides a well defined position for the hook to attach. If you remove anything from the setup to reduce hardware, it should be the hook. Simply attach the line thimble direct to the shackle.

I agree Joseph. The reason I had the Bow shake there was the hook was to loaded with the two star ends.

When the trees in the video aren’t perpendicular to the screen, it’s easy to tell that the camera angle is for dramatic effect. So, if you want to know the grade he was truly winching, rotate your phone to make the trees straight up and down. Lol
