      Of course the guy in the stolen car is to blame for the accident but sometimes I wonder if it wouldnt have been better to not pursue once speeds got horrendous and public safety became an issue, afterall the guy on the fence lost his legs and all because a policeman was trying to apprehend a car thief, the stolen car can be replaced, the victim's legs can't and he was an innocent party in all this

      @@nix123ism I agree with your views pretty much 100% about materialistic objects being replaceable and peoples lives not, but I still feel for the officer. The offender was not only guilty of stealing the car resulting in a high speed pursuit where an innocent member of the public lost his legs, he was guilty of other carjackings, robberies and generally terrorizing many members of the public. He needed to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

      Chain of events happened when this bell end got high in adrenaline and decided to push the Subaru to the point of crashing, all traffic police are the same get a buzz out of adrenaline and care more about the chase than the safety of the public.

    That lad didn't get hurt because you worked your shift, he got hurt because of the prick in the Subaru. It was only a matter of time before the criminal killed someone regardless of whether they were being pursued or not. Hindsight's a wonderful thing none of us have 😔

    • @yeahyeah4433
      @yeahyeah4433 3 года назад +8

      Exactly, If he had to abort at the thought it might push the guy into doing something stupid then every pursuit ever would be aborted. Pursuing him is trying to prevent him being at large and eventually killing himself and probably others, Its just unfortunate that the pursuit ended the way it did and it can seem like you where part of that chain. There's wanting to speed and do a chase from the cops and theres downright disregard for anything including their own life. No fault of the officer here.

    • @slap_A_flamingo
      @slap_A_flamingo 3 года назад +2

      Probably the worst thing that can happen. He had literally just aborted the pursuit and the guy wiped out. At the end of the day. He could have seen it first when he pulled the pink car over and thought "fuck it, I'll let him go". But I suppose the uniform keeps them in the mindset. At the end of the day they guy was just doing his job. Think the Subaru driver would have eventually killed someone anyways

    • @yeahyeah4433

I mean hes driving at 90-110 mph in a 30 residential area, to have to make that kind of decision aswell as all the other stuff hes thinking of is impossible to be correct everytime. And as I said above if they thought it was too dangerous almost every high speed chase would be aborted, and that would just encourage idiots to go stupid speeds and they know the cops wont tail.

    • @yeahyeah4433

      Its the same with the mopeds/bikes in london, previously the law was they couldnt chase bikes because its too dangerous, But now theyve been allowed to ram them off the bike and allowed to chase, so criminals cant just get ona bike and get away every time.

    Hi Ben, i stumbled upon your first story so to speak. I am a former policeman from the Netherlands and have the same pictures and films in my head other places different story's. You retired as i was fired after a couple of years sitting home and being sick. I read a couple of comments and everybody tells you that your not to blame. What they do not understand that there where to many black boxes hidden away and that the pursuit opened everything. I started a complete new life it took me a very long time to come so far but i am there . You are a brave and strong man telling your so called story's . I know how that make you feel and the side affects later.... I hope that the police in your country take better care of there police man and woman. PTSD is not something to be ashamed for it happens and nobody asked for it. Police man /woman see things nobody wants to see and the public do not know this they only see a uniform and they think in tickets. That is just a very little part of the job. I hope you are doing well and wish that the ghosts stay away . With the deepest respect for you, Arie JW Hermans.

You always get an instant when people are human and have an accident which isn't intentional, not talking about serious injury to anyone, but minor bumps and scrapes and you know some one somewhere wants to make a mountin out of a molehill. A police van parked at a hospital and an ambulance parking in front of it, the hand brake cable failed and the ambulance rolled into the front of the police van, no one injured, police van rad burt, paramedic really apologetic. To me that is just a simple accident, yip still a collision.

  • @207522
    @207522 3 года назад

    *Ben PLEASE don't blame yourself for the actions of someone else. This man that chose to run from you and disregard the lives of everyone else on the road. He is the only one to blame for this crash. If you had called the chase off I doubt he would have slowed down or stopped. At least you being right behind him made for a quicker response and EMTs getting there to help the injured bystander quicker than if you weren't there to call in the crash immediately. That few seconds or minutes may have been what saved this mans life. I started watching Police Interceptors about a year ago and seeing the way you and the other officers in the U.K. conduct yourselves with members of the public, amazing de-escalation tactics and the compassion you have for people (even criminals) really gave me a culture shock. Here in America the actions and decisions of law enforcement officers are rarely questioned or punished if the do something wrong. I remember an incident here where a guy was being chased by cops on a highway at high speed and the officer chose to do a PIT maneuver on this truck which caused it to flip multiple times and ended with the suspect (who wasn't buckled in) being ejected from his truck which then rolled on top of him and killed him. The vehicle was going way too fast to safely use a PIT but the officer made the decision to do it anyway. The officer said he did it because he thought he was going to kill an innocent member of the public if he continued. After learning the man was killed by the officer flipping his truck, the officer was very casual about the whole thing as if he felt that the man had got himself killed. The officer was never charged or penalized in any way and it was considered a successful PIT because he stopped the truck. I never saw any remorse from him for the death he was at least partially responsible for. Many officers here are quick to use violence, threats and intimidation to get people to do what they want. From what I've seen on the show, you and other U.K. cops are unbelievably professional and polite and watching how you and your fellow officers conduct yourselves has been a breath of fresh air for me. For the record, I don't hate or dislike American cops in general and I've never been in trouble with police but that hasn't stopped me from being threatened and sworn at by cops on a few occasions. From what I can see you were a great cop Ben and even more importantly you're a great human being.*

    Sad story and well told...these sort of nightmare stories happen more than we think....the risk of a Police Interceptor being involved in such accidents have to be massively higher.... the issue is the criminal has no care or consideration in these circumstances and with those odds, the interceptor risks is escalated even higher....The victims in this case is clear, the poor lad and his family and friends and the Police Officer and his family and friends. Can't say there is a happy ending to this story....

    Good lad that, his attitude will get him so far. As a guy in a wheelchair it pains me to see people say "my life is over" like you can still do literally anything you want to do, just got to have the right attitude and support. You pursued that guy because you knew that he was going to end up killing someone with the way he was acting. Just because he nearly killed someone on the day you tried to stop him doesn't mean you are responsible.

    (Posted on my birds account) this man here is the ONLY copper that has ever treated me as a human. He's also that's also given me a good scrap on occasions and made me learn from them. He never once called for his mates that just watched. Really decent coppe, I apologise sincerely for making your job that little bit harder then it had to be and I'm sorry the police force broke you. The underworld broke me too, we both have the same battles to fight, we just wear a different uniform. 💪

  • @firefly2k7uk
    @firefly2k7uk 3 года назад

    Hi Ben,
    I would say one thing to this video. Consider the man you pursued, he didn't care who he hit, he didn't care what danger he posed to others and clearly took no responsability. You, on the other hand, wear that responsability even today. Whilst it burdens your conscience, you can take comfort in knowing that burden means you are a caring the compassionate human being. You went to face the situation and take responsability even if you never were asked.
    Life is full of what if's and the path not taken, but what matters is the moment we are in now, considering the fact that we cannot change the past. I am glad to hear he is doing well, he is happy, he has achieved a good life with a family and who knows where he would have been without the accident, we just can't predict.

    Hey Ben, picture the scene!
    Driving down m62, car in middle lane doing 55mph. I’m in lane 1 doing 70mph, is it illegal to just carry on past in lane 1? Or should I move to lane 3 to pass

    • @BenPearson1965

      What!!!!.. undertaking is not taught on your driving test... dont ever do it.. overtake like you are suppose to.. or try it and see what happens when that car pulls into lane one at 50 when you are doing 70.. just slow down and overtake.. dont ever ever undertake.

      @@michaelnight3798 but isn’t isn’t under taking when you are behind somebody, pass them on the left and cut in front of them? If they’re hogging the middle lane then that’s their problem.

    • @michaelnight3798
      @michaelnight3798 3 года назад

      @@MrTwister86660 regardless of what you think the driver in front is doing or thinking. Hogging etc... is irrelevant.. when have you ever been told to pass on the left.. never because it is dangerous.. like I said if the car even puts its left indicator on as you are along side it will make you immediately change your speed and direction..it will give you a scare anyway... so... Pass on the right and you will be fine.. thats why we overtake to the right.
      I have seen a car do this to a Lorry on the M1 southbound near Leicester.. the lorry indicated left and the car ended up in the hard shoulder from a knee jurk reaction.. just overtake to the right and these scenarios won't happen.

    There are too many outcomes of every scenario but especially those inherently dangerous. If you hadnt chased maybe the crash wouldnt have happened there and the young lad would have been ok. But they could have crashed into a family home or a family travelling home. Out of all the infinite scenarios, maybe this was the best outcome.
    I dont think emergency staff get enough credit for that "what if" baggage.
