  • Ultimate Guide to Voluntary Bumping & How to Maximize Compensation.
This is what airlines don't want you to know about volunteering your plane seat and getting compensation. In this video, we reveal insider tips on how to maximize flight vouchers and perks by volunteering to be bumped from your flight. Airlines often overbook their flights and offer passengers a chance to give up their seats for a voucher and other bonuses. You can be paid a ton of money to volunteer to give up your seat since the airline does not want to have to involuntarily deny boarding to any passengers.
You'll learn how to increase your chances of being bumped and how to negotiate for the best deal, including free upgrades, lounge access, meals, and even hotel stays. Don't miss out on the opportunity to score big with flight vouchers and perks. This is exactly how you can make the most of an overbooked and oversold flight.

I was coming home from St. Maarten on American and was offered $1,400 credit to go on the next flight that left in an hour. When the next flight was ready to go, I was offered another $1,400 credit to take a flight that left 2 hours later. That paid for 4 trips to SXM over the next year

It helps to do some pre-planning as well. We once had a flight with 2 stops to Maui, Denver and San Francisco. I knew there was a direct flight from Denver to Maui, so I listened carefully to the announcements when we got off the plane in Denver and when they announced the need for people to give up their seats to San Francisco, I was ready with the flight number they could put me on. We not only got $400 each in future credits, we got admission to the lounge, lunch vouchers and we arrived early in Maui. Our bags arrived about 90 minutes later, but we were able to pick up the rental car and head over to Krispy Crème while we waited. Always have a plan B.

I received a $1,000 travel certificate for voluntarily changing my destination from BWI to Reagan airport. Reagan was actually better for me anyway. However, they didn't announce the amount of compensation during the announcement, so I was shocked and pleased when the agent told me to check my email for my $1,000 certificate! I was already planning on taking a dive trip so this was my airfare all taken care of. I was worried that the certificate would be hard to use or that it had limits, but no. I used it to pay for my trip to Turks and Caicos next month with no problems at all. It even took care of my upgraded seats! Thanks so much for your great travel vids!

I once got voluntarily bumped I got $1,500, they said I would have a reservation for a flight the next day. They gave me two meal vouchers and a night at a hotel. The problem however was the next day they didn't have my reservation and I ended up on stand by. I was all day at the airport and that second day was also very busy. Luckily I did get a flight on the last flight for the night.

I remember when the minimum was a free flight and often the cost of the current flight. Each time I had the chance my schedule didn’t allow it.
I remember a flight back to scholl for finals, after the Christmas holidays. Students had a large block of the seats but that wasn’t taken into account, and very few were over 21. Those that were bumped were those that boarded the flight last not those that checked in late! Then when they landed on the next flight they had to flight for the rest of trip from the connecting flight. They offered bus transportation and then rental cars but the problem there was finding enough drivers of age to rent a car. if I recall correctly at least 10 were left behind!

At least in Europe they give you cash to give up your seat. I have scored a few times and always got cash for being flexible. Great channel Megan.

Interesting that some airlines are now asking how much you would take to be bumped to a later flight. I have not seen this as of yet.
I agree about getting there early to offer your seat up. Many gate agents will take people in order of their "volunteer"....now that didn't include the negotiation. It didn't occur to me to ask for the airline club lounge, what a great idea! I've been upgraded on my next flight home several times like this and once it included a overnight hotel stay. But remember, those overnight stays are usually to get you on that next flight...which could be 6 am. So it's not a full overnight stay most times. Awesome info as always Megan!

I received a $600 Airline voucher, and a voucher for a taxi cab ride to take me to another nearby airport. I got on that plane, and arrived at my destination only 2 hours later than originally planned. Plus my luggage was already there waiting for me.

1994 - never had this before - LAX to Houston - was not interested as they offered flight credits which were useless to us as we were international tourists & on a booked tour. Home I lost my business class seat & a full refund but got 3 seats in economy for a 5 hour flight. It was New Years Day & I just wanted to sleep so was happy with my free seat & 3 for a bed.

Hello - love your videos - I have a question and maybe it's an idea for a new video. I'm confused about all the options airlines are giving us now for "refundable upgrades" - I understand if the ticket is more for leg room or bags, but wouldn't my travel insurance or credit card help with the rebooking or refund issues? Do I need to choose "refundable"? These are new since the pandemic and I think they are just another way to get money. Thoughts?

For international travel, do you check a bag? If not, how do handle the 7 kg carry on bag restriction many airlines have. Care to make a video about this? I believe we can separate a laptop and carry a small backpack in addition to the carry on bag. I never check bags but this is a difficult situation with 7kg. Thank You!

    • @PortableProfessional

You are right. Many airlines continue to allow a carry on and a personal item with weight and/or size restrictions. Budget airlines may only allow a personal item. Great idea for a future video. Thanks Cody!

TSA says you can bring plants in checked luggage or carry on. If not packed in your carry on they would count as your personal item. Good luck.

I have been given $400 in flight credit, plus the next flight out was in first class. At the time, it seemed like a great deal. By today’s standards, not so much. Also loved being the only woman in fist class, and the business travelers making sure I always had what I needed.

Bumped from a flight--- Hey, what else is new? ---unofficial talks with appropriate someone in pertinent quarters---should ensure knowledge of other unspecified never-filled to-capacity flights -- one may instead--- or proceed to hop aboard for the trip -- at far less checked for disappointing operaror -- while calculations of what percentage of paid fees---if not in its entirety--(which it should be---but isn't always guaranteed), continues in the Janus-faced airline.
