Bought the Ecobee and was praying that am not one of those that would be needing to do extra work because of no C wire in my thermostat. And of course I ended up needing one. Went to my HVAC the wiring were not straight forward colors. And I said Nope! Not risking damaging anything. Reluctantly scheduled for a tech to come in and take care of the installation. Woke up the next morning, went on RUclips and as God wanted it, I stumbled upon your unique video. You wiring in the HVAC and thermostat were similar to mine. Literally saved us! We tried calling support and they said they had too many people on hold so they hung up on us, found this video and it helped fix our problem! I don’t normally comment on videos. But so grateful for this one!!
I hired an AC company to come down and install the ecobee devices and they couldn't do it. They didn't bother looking into the adapter or cabling back to the ecobee plate and was planning on returning the units until I saw this video. Wonderful job explaining and showing us what to do...I have them installed and working . Thank you
I just installed it and I owe you a huge thank you! A Company told me it wouldn’t be possible since I had no c wire and they wanted to charge me $$$ (a lot)to make it work. You made it possible! Thank you again!
For a heads up for anyone in my same situation. My thermostat didn't have a C connection on it. I went to my HVAC to install the PEK, and realized I did have a C cable coming out of the thermostat cable housing (the end was disconnected and wrapped around the housing itself), as well as a C cable coming from the main control box. I went back to go check my thermostat, and turns out the C wire was taped off and sitting behind my thermostat, unconnected. So, my system was in fact set up for the C cable, it's just that my thermostat didn't use it. Back at the HVAC I spliced the C cable coming from the thermostat housing to the C cable coming out of the main control box. Proceeded to setup using the C cable instructions, and it worked like a charm! I don't know how universal this is, but my C cable was blue.
Omg this is incredible. I went and checked and saw the extra blue cable unused and wrapped around the bundle. So I wonder if there's any chance that the C wire was already setup in the HVAC system? Sounds like a headache having to climb up there and I don't have a ladder. Btw so thoughtful of you to post this!!
@@diwu16 It's possible the C wire is connected at the HVAC, but I really don't know. This is my only foray into AC! I can't see any harm in trying and seeing what happens. So thankful I checked the comments! And thank you so much for posting this comment! I pulled the bundle of wires out of the wall behind my thermostat…and guess what? A BLUE C WIRE! Yay!!
I just bought the ecobee (wanted the wi-fi capability) and my HVAC system setup was exactly like your video. Because the documention and support provided by Ecobee was USELESS regarding installing the PEK I was going to return my Ecobee purchase. But then I happened upon your video, your video was so detailed that I decided to go ahead and do the install. I held my breath when I had everything hooked up and while turning the HVAC back on but thankfully everything is working the way it should. Thank you for your very detailed video. Ecobee should pay you.
I SERIOUSLY LOVE YOU 😂…. I had so much trouble with the manual guide because they did not say ANYTHING about switching the 2 wires to the thermostat. THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Now I can cool down because it’s 90 degrees in my house.
Thank You!!! My thermostat failed on xmas eve. It's -6 outside right now, so not a good thing!!! I got to Home Depot in time to buy a new one, but couldn't get it installed. Ecobee service literally said "due to high call volume and long wait times, we are unable to take calls at this time, click". Yikes! Luckily I found this video and the thermostat went in without issue. You really saved my butt, thanks so much!!!
You are a lifesaver. Thank you . Very detailed and absolutely amazing video.explained everything perfectly. I was struggling with ecobee enhanced from past 2 hours and then i found this video and took me 10-15 mints after that. Now my thermostat is working. Thanks a lot
Just watched your step by step and now I see why we couldn't install the first ecobee a year ago .Guess I can purchase another and watch again to install correctly. My thermostat is not equipped with the c terminal. I have the same as you were uninstalling. I am so happy to have found you and I live in the Chicago area as well. Thanks so much for this tutorial.
Very clear instructions and easy to follow. Followed the instructions from this video and was able to install the thermostat in 30 minutes. Really appreciate it.
You are a good teacher as well as a good instructor. Your video is very educational and also easy to follow. Thank you for taking your time to come up with this video.
Thank you! This helped tremendously. I did mess up and turned on the HVAC before hooking up the Ecobee unit, which in turn blew the fuse on the HVAC. I had to make a trip to Home Depot to get another one. So don't flip the switch back until everything is hooked up correctly!
I have a Carrier Edge thermostat connection with 2 wire but your video helped me to identify the control board so I disconnected that 2-wire smart board and connected straight with c-wire setup. Works great.
Thank you for your excellent video. You explained everything perfectly especially the PEK wiring and making sure the blue wire went into the PEK slot and the Green wire went into the C slot on the thermostat. Ecobee instructions don’t tell you that. But again a big thanks you were a huge help as it’s -10 below and had to install new thermostat
this video made this install a breeze. Had no power once everything was completed and I just went back to double check my steps to make sure all wires were connected and that seems to be the problem. Once I double checked everything, everything was perfect. Thanks for the video
Great video! Of course I forgot to take a picture of the wire setup on the previous thermostat when replacing it. This video helped me look for the circuit board to find the wire colors for the new thermostat. Thanks again!

Your video gave me the confidence I needed to buy and install my own Ecobee. I also ran in to the no C wire issue so you were very helpful in my situation. Thank you.
Thank you! Thank you!! I followed this step by step and was able to set mine up within 30 mins or so…the only thing is I thought I did it incorrectly but with my HVAC unit..it must be properly closed in order for the unit to work…once I did that…it worked with no issues!!
So glad I looked at the comments again!! And thank you for mentioning this!! Went to install the power extender in my hvac, but then found C wire behind my thermostat…so I used that. But when I finished setting everything up, nothing happened… then I saw your comment and remembered…I FORGOT TO PUT THE HVAC PLATE BACK ON! So, thank you!
Thank you for your video. One simple question my brother-in-law purchased the ecobee enhanced thermostat, so would the entire video also be applicable for the enhanced model?
If your thermostat wire has an unused wire on it (Usually wrapped around the wire) you can just connect it to C and use it as C and not install the extender box
Wrong. Mine was loose on the other side. Good logic though. I connected it to B. My A/c is 18 hearts old. The air compressor doesn’t have a C terminal to connect to on none of the circuit boards. B is essentially what C is joe though. It’s a trane motor
I'm in Chicago as well, great video and like comments below they want to charge me a lot of money stating I need new wires but it's almost exactly like the video the only difference is my yellow wire is connected on the thermostat but not connected to y on the furnace instead there's a blue wire connected to B/C. With the yellow wire wrapped around the bundle.
Thanks brother your video help me a lot God bless you. I just wanted to mention some thing I just have a problem I have no C on my furnace call the customer service they told me hook it to the COM.
Fan on AUTO only means that it is normally off and only comes on if the AC or heater is running. If you leave fan ON, it will run constantly, even if the AC or heat is off.
I'm installing my Ecobee3 Lite into an older heat pump and the heat pump doesn't have a C terminal. At 8:01 in this video you said the C wire goes into the C terminal. My terminal options are G, O, B, W3, W2, W1, R, BK, T, Y, Y/O. Any advice here?
In case the thermostat has 5 cables should I make any changes in the circuit panel or should I just disconnect the old thermostat and connect the new. In this case which would be the correct diagram?
R to RED, W to White, Y to Yellow, G to Green. Your 5th wire should be blue (but doesn't have to be, as long as you use the same color at each end) and that would go to C. In your furnace/blower, match that color/terminal combination. You will have another bundle of wires, two wires (usually red & white) that go to the outside condensing unit. One of those red or white wires pairs up with the yellow wire on the Y terminal and the other to the blue wire on the C terminal.
Question if you hook up extender to AC system in attic and you have a 2 wire for boiler and its winter time and put thermostat on heat mode do you still get power from C wire on extender at AC unit?
I have a question so I think I have a dehumidifier downstairs, but I don’t really know how it works or anything. Would I click that I have an accessory installed?
I know this is an old video but hopefully someone sees it and gives me a little insight. When I decided to upgrade to a smart thermostat I only had 4 wires, R W Y & G. I had a Trane system that did not even have a C connection at the inner condenser. It also did not have a W connection. After multiple attempts, I figured it out by looking at a wire diagram attached on the panel. There was a blue wire labeled 'B' and this ultimately connects to a 24v potential. It's a great installation video but for some reason my AC doesn't turn on now. But the fan is on. It is 82 degrees F now and trying to figure this out.
Hi, have a quick question here. I have only 4 wires from thermostat. My furnace has two Y (one is Y1, one is Y/Y2). Currently only Y1 is connected with Y from the thermostat. Y/Y2 is not connected. So I assume I should use Y1 (not Y/Y2), correct? On my furnace control board, it has Y1, Y/Y2, W/W1, W2, R, G, C. Currently, Y1 is connect with Y from thermostat, (Y/Y2 not used), W/W1 is connected with W from thermostat, (W2 not used), R is connected with R from thermostat, G is connected from G from thermostat. Also Y1 and C are connected with other cables inside furnance/AC. So with PEK kit, I should use Y1 (for Y), W/W1 (for W), R (for R), G (for G), and C (for C), correct? Thanks.

Can you still use the fan, independent of AC or heat running?
Would running the A/C with "Fan On" instead of AUTO be cheaper than doing AUTO with a portable A/C unit in an upstairs room at night?
Fan on AUTO only means that it is normally off and only comes on if the AC or heater is running. If you leave fan ON, it will run constantly, even if the AC or heat is off.

Where can I find that rectangular trim plate?
Thanks.
btw, I have a 2 stages furnace. And AC is single stage.
Hi Marc, yes I have unused wire it's blue color but in C port already green wire.
Can this PEK wiring be used with an outdoor heat pump using the O/B connected to the C tstat terminal and jumped to the O/B heat pump terminal?
