Backfilling The Basement

  • Back at the basement job today and it's time to backfill it. I had the excavator there first cause I just finished with another job and needed to use it to place the clean rock around the perimeter of the basement for the drain. I put about 2.5' of clean rock on top of the drain then started pushing the clay in. Also had to set some blocks for pillars for the porch. The next day I brought the loader back to speed up the backfilling and rough grade around the basement. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #backfill

    Those must be Takeuchi blocks if people scratch their heads wondering if they'll work or not. My little 230 series 2 will do everything my 350C Deere will do, outside of drag a pan. Leave the builder to set the scope of the build. You don't tell the builder how to build his houses, and he'll keep calling to have his holes dug. He probably won't tell you what kind of oil to run in your equipment either. Good vidya. Cheers.

    Tough site to figure out grading on..I hate doing those, water is always a problem, like building a house in the bottom of a toilet bowl. Was wondering, how come no compaction of lifts in the clay/rock backfill? Looks like that stuff would settle to beat the band over a year or so. Code here is 6" of drop over the first 10', after settling. Hard number to hit without compaction.

    • @eliteearthworksllc
      @eliteearthworksllc  4 года назад +1

      Yeah it keeps thing interesting. I don’t have a jumping jack just a plate compactor and it would take forever to compact it. I ran the hose from the other house and watered it down a few good times. Plus the sides were still caving off so I wasn’t about to get down there. I figure by the time I go back to do the finish it will have settled down some. Appreciate you watching

    I don’t use the corrugated pipe anymore... too soft and skeeter live to breed in it. I understand that it is cheaper and easier to install but if it fails the basement will be damp and it is really expensive to replace... but, to each his own.
    About compaction... those septic trenches that we dug were as deep as 4ft. We put in our rock and filled them to the top. Compacted them with the baby backhoe tires. It then rained nearly 6”. They settled less than 1”. Folks who haven’t worked with our souls much don’t realize just how dense they are!!

    It seems that the enitre property is rather high. While it would have been more expensive, I wonder if it had not been better in the long run, to dig down the entire height of the proeprty by 3 to 4 feet, run retaining walls with water collection along the perimeter tree lines and set the foundations and walls lower, instead of now trying to backfill and slope a hill around them.

    sdr35 sewer pipe is thinner walled than sdr26 domestic water pipe used by utilities. I had to occasionally use sdr26 rather than sdr35 because of the pipe covering being shallow if there was going to be vehicle traffic on it in it's use area. (6" sdr35 pipe has wall thickness of .1714"---- 6" divided by 35 gives wall thickness of pipe......likewise 6" sdr26 pipe has wall thickness of .2308"). Information I'll bet you already knew.

    Now that you backfilled the far end of the basement you’ll have to go back and dig a trench for the waterline. Too bad they didn’t mark the wall where it was going to enter the basement so you could have at least laid it in close but that’s typical of many jobs.

      @@eliteearthworksllc Crazy just dry stacking, they are eventually going to be weight bearing, they should contain re-bar and be filled with concrete, what happens when the earth compacts and dries out around them, I also notice there was no fabric barrier between your drainage rock and the earth on top, eventually the dirt will percolate down and restrict the drainage of the clean fill, that and your dry stack will create a problem in say 10 years. Dangerous to blame the builder cos I know who he is going to lay the blame on and it AINT HIMSELF. Get it in writing or on film when these instructions are handed down, way dodgy.
