Kidnap the Queen's Daughter! Gunfire Outside Buckingham Palace

- In 1974 an attempt was made to kidnap a senior female member of the British Royal Family. In dramatic scenes, shots were fired outside Buckingham Palace as a diabolical kidnap plot was narrowly foiled by police and brave bystanders.

Almost everyone's unarmed and just walking up like, "Excuse me, sir" and getting shot, like in a Monty Python sketch.
Yes, that was my first impression. The things not to do with an armed criminal were done. The touchy feely trust factor got several people shot and miraculously not killed. Unfortunately it takes events like this for the lights to come on.
@@soundmind192 But it's almost like a British tradition to have such occasional escapades . Remember the last tragedy on Westminister Bridge where a courageous fellah had to make use of a borrowed Narwhal tusk to deal with an Islamist suicide knife man and others had to use a skateboard and beer bottles on another occasion. It's Pythonesque were it not so serious and tragic that a country like Britan used to allow its citizens suitable personal armaments to deal with such ruffianly behaviour 150 years ago .
@@jamesjanson6129 Ah yes 1874, such marvelous utopian grand ol' days, it's been so long I almost can't remember.
It gladdens my heart to hear of bystanders stepping in. One thing I despise these days are people more concerned with filming an incident rather than helping.
In the US the heroes risk being prosecuted and receiving prison time.
Very true
@@jasonstclair1329 Yher, this was the UK in 1974.
But yes, I understand the point: and yet when the more recent terrorist attacks have happened in London (2017 for example), many ordinary people 'had a go' - one ex-convict with a Narwhal tooth, couple of guys with brushes / brooms, one guy hit the attackers with his skateboard (sadly just jump he made, but still).
Douglas Murray had a conversation with an old Israeli man who had fought in some of Israel's earlier wars (1967 and 1973) after the Oct 7 attacks to ask him about the response of today's Israelis to the current crisis. He admitted to being very pleasantly surprised by the young generation and said they had responded MAGNIFICENTLY. I suspect that very similar sentiments would be expressed by Ukrainians today. Not everything is awful these days!

The boxer Ron Russell caused himself some trouble after this. A police officer mentioned to him that the Queen might pay off his mortgage as a reward. Russell took that as a done deal, stopped making payments, and almost lost his house. He sold his George Medal in 2020 for £50,000.

One of the most British stories I’ve ever heard. Excellently recounted, Doctor!Thank you so much. And I think we should all raise a glass to Ronald Russell. Unarmed civilian who raced into the fray. The man changed the entire momentum of the kidnap attempt.

Politely trying to talk to an active shooter seems the most British thing ever.
It was stupid. Her bodyguard should have drawn his weapon as he got out of the vehicle in fact they shouldn't have stopped in the first place! Safety was 1 minute away.

Oh, so, Patriot Games isn't 100% fiction. Good job Tom Clancy.
From Wikipedia: The attempted kidnapping of Princess Anne is the focus of the Granada Television-produced docudrama To Kidnap a Princess (2006) and inspired story lines in Tom Clancy's novel Patriot Games.
Except that none of the real people were quite that attractive. 😀
The only negative thing here is that Clancy -Being Clancy, and very American- had to insert an American in a very British situation. Princess Ann has never once whined about this experience. She is amazing!
200 specialist police officers …. 100 million …… who remembers the male who made his way into queen Elizabeth’s bedroom in the middle of the night and sat on her bed whilst she was sleeping !
That was much worse than anything the Queens children experienced
That was before, when security around Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street was quite lax unlike today, which 100 Million pound price is from.
That was in the 80’s I believe
The late Queen did not want her London home and office turned into a fortress, her weekend home was one and loved by her. Ground and boundary patrols were increased at night after the incident.

This is the first time I ever heard this story in detail. After Beaton's Walther PPK jammed its reputation as a service sidearm suffered, but an investigation revealed it had a faulty magazine which likely contributed to the malfunction along with Beaton's weakened grip on the pistol.
I've always wondered about this event with me being too young to know what actually happened, with having not lived through it
>Multiple men get shot trying to stop a kidnapping
>Other unarmed men attack the guy who was shooting everyone
>Princess Anne makes one plucky comment

Exactly.
Reality check: she did not comply, if she had, things would have ended differently. You cherry pick what she said and filter out what she did. She did not comply and struggled against the kidnapper, not fighting, but resisting and trying to not get pulled away!

Hearing Dr. Felton's narration it looks like a miracle that nobody was killed.
First time hearing this story, fascinating! I just listened to the BBC series "Killing Victoria," about how some 5 attempts were made on that Queens life. This story fits right into that genre, Thanks Dr Felton.
Rumours at the time suggested that Beaton didn't have access to his weapon rather than it jamming!
The Walther PPK jammed on his last job and Beaton spent six months in the hospital in consequence...
It jammed because it was fired so rarely that the mag spring was compromised and couldn't push the next round up
“It’s never let me down before, sir”
@@lptomtom PPK 's are hard to jam so that is likely the explanation
@@lakehaweamotorsltd4144 On infrequent occasions, the make of the ammo could cause a jam, or neglect of proper maintenance. Mine once failed to eject the mag, but that was my fault. I hadn't touched it in 2 years. Never will happen again.
@@Weazel1 It was a faulty magazine.
Anne's response of "not bloody likely" has always tickled my fancy.
The failed kidnapper of Princess Anne, Ian Ball, looks at least ten years older than his age of only 26.
I always thought Anne wasn’t attractive but she’s a looker in those pictures plus a total badass. Great story!
Princess Anne is very much her mothers daughter.
She's exceptional in many ways.
the thing that stood out for me in this narration was the seeming lack of activity from Mark Phillips - perhaps an unfair assumption on my behalf but one would have expected a husband to be in the position the Inspector took up as a human barrier for his wife
Indeed - the same thought struck me. He was an army officer after all.
Even with the more spacious interior shown at 5:10 or as opposed to the probably non-official recreation at 5:33, I have a hard time understanding how Beaton climbed over Phillips to put himself between Anne and Ball only to be thrown back over Phillips and out the side door by the gunshot. Then later Anne pushed past Phillips to exit the car only to push past him again when she re-entered and locked the door? His conspicuous absence from the report encourages the idea that he legged it with Lady Rowena at the start. I can imagine him telling Anne later "I thought you were right behind me."
@@MarkFeltonProductions He wasn't much thought of by his Army colleagues either. But he is a really good rider and instructor.
Cheers mark
Even though I am not British. I teared up. Great bit of history. Thanks professor Felton.

Anne was a babe.
*chortle* Just what I came here to say too!
The interview of Princess Anne with Michael Aspel not long after this was brilliant. Princess Anne just showed how fearless she is!
Ironically: James Bond
In the fictitious James Bond film "DR. No" Bond is relieved of his Beretta because it had jams on an operation and issued a Walthers PPK.
I had no idea this even happened. Very interesting, thanks Doc. I learn something new with every video.
The claim that Anne’s Bodyguard’s Walther PPK “jammed” - is actually a source of considerable controversy. Many of the Royals have peculiar likes & dislikes & can be very stubborn & obstinate about them, causing some of their Protection Officers & ancillary staff to subserviently kowtow to their wishes, regardless of how unreasonable or ill-advised they might be… It was widely reported within the Metropolitan Police, that Princess Anne did not like firearms to be carried in close proximity to her & actually refused to allow her Bodyguard to carry his pistol in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Amazingly - as a result - it is claimed that he agreed to keep it in the boot of the car instead… This would appear to explain why he did not draw his firearm when initially confronted by the assailant, & why it was necessary for him to claim that his Walther PPK Automatic Pistol “jammed” when he would have been expected to have been able to get off a shot… whereas he would have had to retrieve it from the boot of the car, before being able to fire…..
Whatever the truth of the matter… that OFFICIAL account of his pistol “jamming” is the one that was accepted, & it created a resultant distrust of Automatic Pistols for Close Protection duties, such that all of the Walther PPK’s used for Royalty & VIP Protection Duties, were then replaced by the much inferior, 2” Barrelled, Smith & Wesson “Model 64”, which is about as accurate as a Pea Shooter & with questionable stopping power.
Make of that what you will….. 🤷🏻♂️
If there was a round chambered...the Walther PPK is designed to be safely carried with a round in the chamber...I really doubt it 'jammed'. Now if the gun had an empty chamber the bodyguard may have had trouble chambering a round owing to the fact that he was wounded in the shoulder. Either way don't expect anything like the truth out of the royal household.
I had never heard that it was in the boot of the car; choosing what was at the time the most concealable of semi-autos then stuffing it in the trunk makes little logical sense but I suppose anything is possible.
That the pistol "jammed" without firing a round has always struck me as unlikely. More likely the decocker/safety was engaged. Say what you will about .380 acp as a caliber, the PPK is a pretty simple, robust, and time tested pistol. You'd have to really do something awful to it for the first round in the chamber to not go "boom" when the trigger is pulled.
I consider the PPK and the Model 64 to be "get em off me" type pistols; you aren't going to win any long-distance target shooting competitions with them but the range you'll need them for aren't going to be that far anyway....as was the case here.
As a firearms instructor, I have to strongly disagree with you about the S&W Model 64. The model 64 was chambered in 38 Spcl. The bodyguard’s gun was actually a Walter PP (not PPK) in 32 ACP (aka 7.65x17). 38 Spcl can have up to about 250 ft-lbs of energy compared to just 130 for 32 ACP.
So the truth is exactly the opposite of what you claimed. The Model 64 has roughly twice the power of the Walther PP in 32 ACP.
@@NoThankYouReallyI disagree with you about the PPK. It is not a “robust” pistol. It is actually a piece of junk. They are unreliable, with a propensity for jamming. They are not comfortable to shoot. They had one advantage at the time - they were small and easy to conceal. But that is about it for the advantages.
As for the accuracy of the Model 64, the ease of shooting one accurately depends upon the length of the barrel. I’ve found that 4” K-frames are among my most accurate handguns. The K-frames with shorter barrels are harder to shoot accurately, due to the reduced sight radius, but in terms of mechanical accuracy retain the accuracy of their larger siblings. The Model 64s sights are unfortunate but the gun itself is capable of excellent accuracy.
@@M1911jln You've fired a PPK? I have, an Interarms version. With proper ammo it worked fine.
I am reminded of the scene from "The Madness of King George" where a madwoman attacks George III with a fruit knife.
"The king has no wound, just a torn waistcoat."
Thinking today everyone would just pull out their phones and maybe one person would try to intervene to stop the kidnapping. Very good story and I thank you for telling it, Dr. Felton.
1974, so 14 years after British military national service ended. Everyone involved except Princess Anne probably had military training.
It's very telling that Princess Ann's husband, Mark Phillips, a former army officer, did not play a more active role in the protection of his wife. His military training should have told him to shield the Princess from the gunman. Was he growing tired of her already? He seems to have changed wives a few times since then.
Beaton got one shot off then his 7.65 (.32acp)Walther failed and jammed because it was common practice to insert the magazine and chamber a round at the beginning of every shift then at the end of the day empty that round out by pulling back the slide and reinserting the same cartridge back into the mag.
After several weeks maybe months the recessed brass extraction rim on that same round become excessively worn and rounded being repeatedly cycled through the extractor claw grabbing it and then impacting on the ejection finger. So when the time came to actually fire it failed to extract the empty shell case from the chamber and thus the pistol jammed after the first shot.
After the event the report on the failed weapon said the empty case had to be pushed out with a cleaning rod and a recommendation circulated that all semi auto weapons that use recessed rims, pistols, SMG, bolt action and SLR rifles when signed in and out made sure there was a new round used every time, this rule did not apply to the Met S&W Model 10 and Webley .38 revolvers which used rounds with a much stronger and thicker extraction rim.
Thanks for that info
