Who cares? as long as he isn’t on dog food and he’s clearly not doing this for show business money. also don’t don’t kid yourself this guy is too good for Sirius and top 40
the american business does make sense, just not to you. I love Johns music, but thats just not what people are looking for today. It makes sense, because tahts how the music industry works.
yessir! two of my favorites with colter wall. those three are the best on the acoustic side without a doubt!!! absolutely amazing. theres not enough good words to say about them. Im going to see tyler childers tomorrow night in Richmond. probably more excited to see him than I was to see cody jinks.
John Calvin Abney mines that guitar for every ecstatic drop of emotion it's capable of and then some more ... absolutely stunnning guitar work. It's not just skill ... it's feeling ... these two are deadly
This is the absolute truth. Man, that guy somehow made his presence known by knowing how to back off at every right moment. Which gave every note he did play so much more relevance. That’s how you play together and not over each other.
The problem is that the record industry is looking for a sexy package, and thats why real guys like John have a hard time getting ahead. John has loads of true talent, and it doesn't matter what you look like. If you can sing, you can play, and you can write great songs like John, then nothing else matters.
His deep raspy voice, his lyrics and pounding on that great sounding Martin this guy is a real gift to us all! This guy is also rising to stardom.Look out Bruce Springsteen, this guy is moving through!
The guy on lead guitar..... is pure talent. I couldn't believe that 1st song. Gave me chills how smooth he was, and how much fun he's having! That's why I play. Because someday I want the opportunity to do it with a legend like John Moreland and do it with a style and sophistication this guy showed. Thanks guys! A display of PURE talent. Big love
That is some great guitar playing and singing and lyrics. Fun to watch the first song where John Calvin Abney plays his smoking harmonica, then lays it down just in time to grab his guitar for more lickety-split picking!
Stapleton Sturgill Childers Colter Cody Jinks Jason Isbell John Moreland I'm sure the list goes on. From someone who never really listened to country before the last 2-3 years, it's a great time to be alive! These guys are keeping REAL music alive.
Goldens gems like this are everywhere, while country radio plays Beyonce pretending to be country. I'll keep NOT listening to country radio. Thank you to all these REAL artists. God bless
Thank you Mr. Moreland for your music. I don't know much about anything but know when I see and hear the real deal. Sad to see untalented musicians make it big in the mainstream but people like Mr. Moreland don't get the recognition they deserve. Thank you again Sir.
It is funny how his songs just touch you so deeply like your soul is crying. From the singing the lyrics to the guitar music it is just Heavenly to me. I sit on my deck and drink beer and listen to his songs over and over
Daniel Saur Exact same thing happened to me. Ran across it after I watched the TDC episode with John Prine. Definitely recommend that one as well. With that said, Moreland just keeps getting better and better. Love this guy.
The song Cherokee gets my heart. The guitar player in the red plaid is having so much fun through every song excellent guitar player as is John Moreland I just want to be there. All of the song Speak to My Soul. John Moreland please come to San Diego
It's artists like this that I find myself gravitating towards lately. Singer/songwriters that tell stories , guys like John Morland and Townes Van Zandt. We definitely need more like this.
Oh my God, you made a believer out of me. real fast. You know most guys would wear that harp, but this guy just picks it up, puts it down and goes right back to blazing on that guitar. You're both amazing. Thank you Tiny Desk Concerts, for finding me so much excellent music!
This is some of the best songwriting I’ve heard in a long time and John Abney’s guitar is such an unbelievably perfect match for it. What a treasure this performance is.
Anyone who thinks that punk, metal and hardcore singers aren't some of the most trained in the business doesn't know a thing about music. That being said, Mr. Moreland's sandpaper rasp is just so comfy. This is the first I've heard him and I cannot wait to further explore his work, including the hardcore stuff. Tiny Desk rocks my world, as always.
Yeah, it makes perfect sense. As a man that grew up in the '90's punk and hardcore scenes, I get it. These days all I listen to is alt-country, folk, bluegrass, etc. And I'm not alone. A lot of us have moved on to this type of music. There's an undeniable connection of punk rock to roots/americana music. A lot of the themes, sounds and chord progressions are very similar, not to mention the fact that they both stem from a grass roots tradition.
Old Wounds is an amazing live version.......Cant express the amazingness of it. Bravo. John Moreland...I missed your show in Lincoln, NE. You need to come back to Omaha NE. Cherokee hits me right in the feels.
We need another one of these. Setlist: You don't care for me enough to cry Blacklist East October This Town Tonight Hang me in the Tulsa County Stars In Times between Thank you.
Yes! Yes! Saw him in Tulsa a few months ago at Cain's Ballroom, so proud of his work finally getting the recognition he deserves. Such a wonderful and humble guy!
Dude playing harmonica is good, but he needs to invest in a rack so he can do both simultaneously. John Moreland reminds me of Bruce Springsteen in the way he writes about his personal experience in life and the simplicity of the music.
What's with all the dumb comments about these guys looking like other people?this is some seriously good music, that's what these comments should be about.
Tiny Desk people... do not decide one day to bring this show to an end. Thank you for the artists you showcase. I've discovered new music and been warmed hearing familiar songs made new 👍😁 We saw Mr. Moreland last summer with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. It was a special night I'm glad you reminded me of that evening. Thank you so much, please carry on...annndd give the Sheepdogs a chance on here I think many would approve!
You can pick up his newest album "Safe Passage" which has fantastic songs, and a lot of that "high pitched" sound. Very glad I added it to my small collection of artists' CDs.
To the 133 thumbs down at the time of this response, your are musically dead inside.
It ain't even worth to reply to all those haters, we good people will enjoy great music till those haters stop they bitterness
Don’t care about these 133… he’s absolutely fantastic
"If the American music business made any sense, guys like John Moreland would be household names."
No truer words ever spoken.
@dom deasha Nonetheless, I reccomend his music
Who cares? as long as he isn’t on dog food and he’s clearly not doing this for show business money. also don’t don’t kid yourself this guy is too good for Sirius and top 40
the american business does make sense, just not to you. I love Johns music, but thats just not what people are looking for today. It makes sense, because tahts how the music industry works.
Thank the good lord he is in my household. Or whoever y'all wanna thank cause he should be.
Instead, we all have to listen to Cardie b
How about that supporting guitarist though!!
Oh dude... he's an animal.
His name is John Calvin Abney. Another great musician from Oklahoma.
he on x games mode
Spot on. Masterly accompaniment. Perfection.
Check out his work with Samantha Crain. Good Stuff on the youtube video of "when you come back"
.....not a wasted word , seamless guitar harmony and just an intimate reflection...... the perfect tiny desk performance....thank you guys
John moreland and Tyler childers are here to save country.
So right! Insane songwriting talent in both.
yessir! two of my favorites with colter wall. those three are the best on the acoustic side without a doubt!!! absolutely amazing. theres not enough good words to say about them. Im going to see tyler childers tomorrow night in Richmond. probably more excited to see him than I was to see cody jinks.
Check out Brent Cobb as well
Gotta put sturgill and Jason Isbell on that list.
I strongly dislike country but I really love this man
John Calvin Abney mines that guitar for every ecstatic drop of emotion it's capable of and then some more ... absolutely stunnning guitar work. It's not just skill ... it's feeling ... these two are deadly
Agreed 110%!!!
exactly what I was thinking
Got to play a song swap with John Calvin in my home town and man, talk about impressive.
This is the absolute truth. Man, that guy somehow made his presence known by knowing how to back off at every right moment. Which gave every note he did play so much more relevance. That’s how you play together and not over each other.
I've been sleeping hard on this guy. Damn. "I've been mining the horizon looking for lies I've yet to tell". I mean come on...
Just saw John in SF tonight.
Best small venue show I've ever seen. Go see him live ya'll.
So so good!
The problem is that the record industry is looking for a sexy package, and thats why real guys like John have a hard time getting ahead. John has loads of true talent, and it doesn't matter what you look like. If you can sing, you can play, and you can write great songs like John, then nothing else matters.
wish i was 25yrs younger so i would have a chance to marry you john!
John Moreland is one of my favorite artists - his voice is haunting, his lyrics are stirring. So glad he finally got the Tiny Desk treatment.
Easily one of the best performances at the Tiny Desk..
You can catch this guy occasionally at a local bar in Tulsa playing randomly.
That was the best lead guitar playing I’ve ever seen bar none.
I wish this was longer. The sound is perfect. I mean this whole thing… perfect.
A songwriters' songwriter
eeyup
That is some great guitar playing and singing and lyrics. Fun to watch the first song where John Calvin Abney plays his smoking harmonica, then lays it down just in time to grab his guitar for more lickety-split picking!
On this episode of "before they were famous" - Action Bronson feat. Lil' Dicky
I wish Lil' Dicky would come to the tiny desk.
I could have sworn the little fella was that dude from Silicon Valley
Epic
I cant even watch this now holy shit thats funny
im dead
John Calvin Abney came straight out of the David Rawlings school. Beautiful playing.
Man those guitars sound magical...
Thomas Middleditch plays a mean harmonica
Gabriel Comin came here to make a silicon valley joke and was 3 months to late...
Dude that’s Penis Anthony Doubligné!
That's not who this is,maybe you should find out who he is in stead of stupid jokes.
Dude, totally who I thought it looked like too haha
@@bkluecke Same, but I'm 2 years too late! :)
Please... please.. please.. get zack bryan on here. Dude is an amazing acoustic musician. Deserves the spot light.
How many artists wish they had written the line "if we don't bleed, it don't feel like a song"?
Stapleton
Sturgill
Childers
Colter
Cody Jinks
Jason Isbell
John Moreland
I'm sure the list goes on.
From someone who never really listened to country before the last 2-3 years, it's a great time to be alive! These guys are keeping REAL music alive.
Check out Ian Noe!
Sara Morrow he’s great!
Travis Meadows.... you're welcome
Goldens gems like this are everywhere, while country radio plays Beyonce pretending to be country. I'll keep NOT listening to country radio. Thank you to all these REAL artists. God bless
That chugging riff for Sallisaw Blues is so damn addictive. Way better than the album version where the acoustic riff is drowned out.
~ B I G S A D B O I ~ ❤
I came to this video again just to see this comment because I needed a reason to smile. Thanks.
His music is beautiful and his lyrics are real. They touch my soul it is everything I feel.
Cringe
more like big sad boi
Thank you Mr. Moreland for your music. I don't know much about anything but know when I see and hear the real deal. Sad to see untalented musicians make it big in the mainstream but people like Mr. Moreland don't get the recognition they deserve. Thank you again Sir.
John Moreland is amazing. His songs make my heart hurt.
It is funny how his songs just touch you so deeply like your soul is crying. From the singing the lyrics to the guitar music it is just Heavenly to me. I sit on my deck and drink beer and listen to his songs over and over
Thank you for following you heart and allowing yourself to share you gift, brother. Keep up the great work.
I woke up this morning and just wanted to hear some John Moreland, I didn't expect this when I searched his name in youtube. Thank you Tiny Desk!
Daniel Saur Exact same thing happened to me. Ran across it after I watched the TDC episode with John Prine. Definitely recommend that one as well.
With that said, Moreland just keeps getting better and better. Love this guy.
@@28happenstance Thanks for the recommendation on that TDC episode!!! Much Appreciated Senor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@claygirl8 Very welcome!
John hardly says a word in his performance because he already pours everything into his lyrics.
In a world of smoke and mirrors, these guys are real.
The song Cherokee gets my heart. The guitar player in the red plaid is having so much fun through every song excellent guitar player as is John Moreland I just want to be there. All of the song Speak to My Soul. John Moreland please come to San Diego
Dude on guitar/harmonica is KILLING it..reminds me of my dad's friend who passed away..that man could play the harmonica like no other
When music makes you cry it’s not your ears listening, it’s your soul
It's artists like this that I find myself gravitating towards lately. Singer/songwriters that tell stories , guys like John Morland and Townes Van Zandt. We definitely need more like this.
Please tour again! I'm so sad the Colorado Springs show got canceled. You're one of my favorites!
Oh my God, you made a believer out of me. real fast. You know most guys would wear that harp, but this guy just picks it up, puts it down and goes right back to blazing on that guitar. You're both amazing. Thank you Tiny Desk Concerts, for finding me so much excellent music!
A duo that reminds me of Guy Clark--poet/songwriter--and Verlon Thompson, guitarist extraordinaire.
This is some of the best songwriting I’ve heard in a long time and John Abney’s guitar is such an unbelievably perfect match for it. What a treasure this performance is.
John Moreland sure knows how to hit the heart strings. Love you bro. Keep up the amazing work 🇺🇸
I love John's voice and his songwriting style. I'd love to sit and drink a few with him and listen to him play for hours. Real talent.
0:05 Sallisaw Blues
3:57 Old Wounds
8:00 Cherokee
Cherokee is such an amazingly powerful song. Gives me the chills from head to toe.
INCREDIBLE sound with just two guitars. Wow
Saw John open for Lucinda Williams in ATL a year back or so and was blown away. Good to see him getting some attention.
>>When you hear John Moreland's sweet voice, it's hard to believe he spent years singing in punk, metal-core and hardcore bands.
Actually, it isn't.
I can hear the gravel of a thousand filthy green rooms, sleeping on floors and couple thousand miles of asphalt.
You gotta be talented to sing that music man, this is probably easier for him
Yeah, that seemed like a weird remark. The fact that his voice is rough and blown out is basically the whole charm of his singing.
That guy accompanying him...incredible!
I have watched this easily over 100 times now. A truly great performance
“I don’t know anything, and you don’t know shit.”
Love it.
loved that line great lyrics the greatest.
*THIS!* Gems like this is reason #27 why I financially support NPR. A million thanks & buckets of gratitude, gang!
NPR is one of those things funded by the government that really truly makes me happy.
I bet.
Like roads...you know...if there were no roads, you'd be really unhappy, don't you think?
That and the park service are about it
Parks are nice, I guess
@@frank13621 I have no argument because I don't disagree lol
Old wounds...new favorite! NPR delivers another gem. These guys are incredible
John Moreland has revolutionized the way I write my own music.
Sure! Let me just rip this vicious harmonica run and fall right into a tasty guitar lick. WHAT!? That was awesome!
John Moreland you are the man!!! Great music, great soul and writing!!
What guitars can truly sound like... wow. all of this is great.
I love how his eyes are closed in every song ... If that's not telling you something I don't know what is
Reminds me of Charlie Daniels doing that..
Saw this guy play in Waverly, AL in 2014. Good stuff.
Hauntingly good. This is what music was invented for.
Wow these guys are good
This is Folk, not country.
We need another one of these. Setlist:
You don't care for me enough to cry
Blacklist
East October
This Town Tonight
Hang me in the Tulsa County Stars
In Times between
Thank you.
Killer setlist.
Blessed musicians...it sounds so tight!
I keep coming back to this once a week. So perfectly soothing. True gem.
It doesn’t get much better than this.
Doubt I’ll ever see two people complement each other better than this.
Thank you for doing what you do.
They are fantastic but to me the greatest duo of all time is jim croce and muary muehlheissen
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds come to mind.
Powerful poetry, the melody pulls my heartstrings . . . . hooray for real country music.
Wish there was something more than a thumbs up for this video. Thank you NPR and thank you John Moreland for blessing us with your music.
This is great. Thank you Tiny Desk...you are my heroes for bringing great little concerts to us. You rock!
These Guys are awesome. I Hope they‘ll perform for a long long time.
Love you man your music is magic thanks for making the world better
why was that so short?! Bring him back!
I discovered his music in the second to last episode of Reservation Dogs, what a heartbreaking but beautiful sound he makes
i would love to see colter wall here. Thanks
Yes! Yes! Saw him in Tulsa a few months ago at Cain's Ballroom, so proud of his work finally getting the recognition he deserves. Such a wonderful and humble guy!
Holy shit!!! I've been super obsessed with this guy's music, I was totally waiting for a TDC from this man! Thank you sooo much
Saw these guys open for Iron & Wine in San Antonio in 2017. Great performance from the duo.
Dude playing harmonica is good, but he needs to invest in a rack so he can do both simultaneously. John Moreland reminds me of Bruce Springsteen in the way he writes about his personal experience in life and the simplicity of the music.
this might be the best music i have ever heard
Very good, cheers from sweden!👍
What's with all the dumb comments about these guys looking like other people?this is some seriously good music, that's what these comments should be about.
mbsnyderc agreed
Some folks can't appreciate things without comparing to something they know (that they came to like by comparing it to something else)
What's with this dumb comment telling other people what their dumb comments should be about?
thank you

Bruce Springsteen meets Bob Dylan, with s guitar lesson from John PRINE. Nice!
I just found this guy today, I was thinking John Prine and Bruce right away.
Oh okay..Great music!!! Great musicians...
Well slap me, then. I'll take it.
This is the real shit.
I just keep coming back to this
BRING BACK THE SONICS.
As of right now, we have us 22 assholes. Meanwhile, for the rest of us, what an artist!
Good job brother! Nice to see ya on the show!
Modern day Steve Earle? With a better voice.
Never heard of this guy and I'm not really into country but this sounds amazing.
The first time I saw that No Heroes tattoo, I knew he was a hardcore fan.
Is it just me or has NPRTDC found all your favourite artists too?
Saw this guy a year ago today and like I kinda fell in love with the high pitched original sounds from the left guys guitar
You can pick up his newest album "Safe Passage" which has fantastic songs, and a lot of that "high pitched" sound. Very glad I added it to my small collection of artists' CDs.
I'm so happy this man got an NPR Tiny Desk 💎
Great voice! Great playing!
