Without subsidies we would all be paying roughly $12.75 per gallon for gasoline. That was in 2011.

I watched an old movie awhile ago. It was early 1900 hundreds. It was about the two men who made machines to pump out cigarettes faster. One of them made a comment at the end. Can you believe we started the biggest addiction in America.
Except big tobacco was trying to advocate for individuals to be able to damage themselves. Big oil is advocating for them to damage everyone. Even if you’ve never seen a combustion engine, you can be affected by it.

My family and I almost died unknowingly living outside a natural gas field from contaminated well water. Now we're so saturated with toxic substances we're the canaries in the coal mine for toxic substances. Almost everything affects us terribly. We can only use completely natural products. It is so terrible having this stuff trapped within us. We're miserable every second of every day.

It’s a power imbalance that no amount of “hard work” can justify. I don’t know the particular circumstances of your business and how you treat your employees, just that in general we would live in a much more just and equitable society if the workers owned the means of production. And by the way, that would make it easier to start your own enterprise. The current mindset of pulling oneself up by their bootstraps just serves to protect the rich and powerful and keeps workers as well as small business owners down. Democratization of the workplace would have the impact of regulating the balance of power. No matter how well intentioned an oppressor is they exist to protect the structure of power that keeps them in control.

What's not fine is suburbanites circling around in traffic all day every day because there isn't an alternative to driving. It's not good for the environment, it's not good for the children, it's not good for mental health, and it endangers everyone around you. The more folks we get out of their cars who don't want to drive, the easier it will be for the construction workers and other folks who actually need to drive. Also, I do take transit to the beach actually. There's a light rail or I just bike there. It's so much better than sitting in traffic.

Petrochemicals are in everything from cosmetics to food. To remove them would entirely change our economy. I can’t imagine that Big Oil would contritely accept responsibility, that it would give up the subsidies, or that it would willingly participate in cleaning up the mess the industry has caused. The American people would fight it, too, because it would change the way they live. And based on historical evidence of what happened with tobacco, people will demand to keep using petrochemicals because they don’t want to change.

Only 20% of Americans smoke now. That's a lot less than when I was growing up during the 60s and 70s and both my parents were blowing smoke in my face every day of my childhood. If you think Americans smoke a lot, you should see how addicted to tobacco people are in the Middle East and Europe. I'm sure a lot of other places in the world are, as well, but I've only been to the Middle East and Europe, so I can't speak to any other areas of the globe.
