Important for me to acknowledge that I didn't think a wah pedal would sound good on harp, and then you made it sound good
and you call yourself a wah pedal expert -_-
I need details on that Mockingbird. She's a beaut.
@@Doomchild2XL thanks man it was custom built for me by Alex Glasser at Iron Horse Instruments
@@CyberattackWorld Ah, so that's a little horsey on the headstock. I see. 👍
I think the sonic characteristics of the harp just make it sound good with everything. I'm STILL not over that Meris Enzo demo.
So I need an entire wah pedal/filtered lo-fi harp album immediately.
Seriously though, this is so cool.
Indeed, is she on Spotify or something?
Yeaaaaaahhhh
Wah pedal filtered lo-fi harp album 😄
PLEASE!!!!!
Agree!
This is definitely the music to an underwater level.
Omg yesss!
It sound like taking mushrooms
When she said “so I brought someone who is an expert on wah pedals” The possibility of Kirk Hammett showing up genuinely crossed my thoughts for a second
Deadass my first thought was "damn a tom morello cameo"
I'm fairly certain Kirk would be nerding out right along with them doing this.
Especially if Emily decided to compose an original herp/ wah pedal piece that corresponds to the drama/ emotions of an old vintage black and white horror movie. Sense Kirk Hammit is a massive horror/ music nerd.
She said expert so that's not a possibility.
Who
I like to imagine a scenario, in which, I walk into my local guitar store and Emily is an employee. She then proceeds to demo stuff for me on harp, makes me reconsider playing guitar, and, due to charming me with her "low pressure" off-beat humorous sales tactics, I find myself in the parking lot, an hour later, trying to stuff a harp and a bunch of pedals into my car, when all I came down for was strings.
LMFAOOOOO your comment just made my DAY 😂💖 you’re probably right, I get way too excited about harp & pedal stuff and I’d be like “LISTEN, Benefactor, a Dusty Strings model harp is only like $3K, that’s just like a high-end guitar price!! Once you hear this baby through reverb you’re gonna shit ur pants”
@@emilyharpist Oh fuck woman, don't stop doing what you're doing!
It took me five minutes to type this, because you're response made me laugh so hard that I couldn't hit the right keys.
Yeah, you'd probably tell me the harp played like buttah, that it was the harp equivalent weight-wise of a Thinline Tele, and then upsell me on "special" patch cables, cuz harps have an "advanced" electronics system that "dont take regular cables, see".
I look forward to more "experts" (read: neighbours that agreed to do it because your sandwiches "taste better than what Bonnie makes").
Remember to do your finger exercises before bed tonight, and wipe down you strings. Via con Dios.

The sound of the harp in combination with a wah-device reminds me of the soundtrack for Sci-Fi movies from the 1970s. You could start a whole new genre at this. Great Job, you two!
Totally Soviet and French sci-fi cartoon OST stuff from 70s-80s.

Almost like that's the prime era of electronic manipulation of sound prior to it's ruin using digital effects.
I remember those xD

Check out tipper lol
Agreed!
@@elyasstephens8242 exactly, Tipper is a great example of wah, resonant electronic synth sounds.
I also think of Amon Tobin - Sounds Like Moths.
Just a one-hour "listening for focus/study/work" track that's just harp on wah.
The first thing she played reminded me a lot of some of Buckethead's slower music. Check out the song Electric Tears from the album of the same name (also Padmasana and Angel Monster, but the whole album is very nice).
This is the best pedal overview ever. It was great to see you discover the sounds, and immediately make the most of them.

Sounds a lot like a synth when effects are applied to the harp.
You’re so right!
Considering that synths are just a bunch of pedal effects put into sequence you are not that far off
@@sillyjellyfish2421 haha that’s not what synths are. Synths use mathematically generated waveforms which are then enveloped.
@@sillyjellyfish2421 NO they're usually a lot more complex than that a perfect example being the DX7 which uses logarithmically generated waveforms.
@@michealpersicko9531 Not that much more complex. It's not super hard to replicate synths using Reaktor, unless you want something that sounded faituful to an analog synth.

People who play harp and know how to analyze and describe sound are absolutely qualified to sell effects to anyone from a kazooist, to a concert pianist, and all who fall in between, and around those camps. Great channel.
Your sound design specifically around the speaking parts of this video are remarkably refreshing. It's so nice not to hear weird mouth sounds (I know people can't help it but still), or buzzy background static. Good job, and thank you for blessing our ears with these examples of interestingly altered musical performance.
Ivan is pretty awesome but for a split second, I thought you were going to bring in Kirk Hammett as the expert.

No offence (I obviously can't expect you to know who he is), but it's a little strange that you'd experiment with wah pedals so much without at least having seen the name before.
Haha, holy shit. The thinly veiled but pure contempt towards wah pedals in the beginning of the episode was hilarious. And those imitations were spot on. Uncanny even.
The foot blurring at 10:19 made me laugh. No free feet pics! Also great video. I recently saw this modern chamber group called Esmerine, and they also had some effects on a harp (I think reverb and some modulation). My harp horizons have been expanded.
I was astounded by that and came looking for a comment which addressed it hahaha
@@PetersonSilva only reason I'm in the comment section lol
I didn't notice! lol
It's not foot blurring, but a shallow depth field (camera shutter aperture below f1/1.4, I guess).
@@gfer66 no no not on the zoom on the right. Look at her foot on the left, where her body appears completely as she plays. There is clearly an ellipsis of blur around her foot
It's so refreshing, as a guitarist who (much like the guitarist you brought in) is very jaded towards many of the effects used in this video, to see someone with very little familiarity with them discover the wonder of these sounds for the first time. I particularly liked the use of the artemis, and if I might make a suggestion, I think hooking up an expression pedal to that one to control the modulation rate instead of using the envelope function could sound very nice on harp.
It peaked with Hendrix and then Kirk Hammet dug up its corpse
If you're jaded that's your problem. 70s wah-funk will never not slap. Maybe worry more about the music and less about what you think other people with think is "cool"...

Bless you for adding the mouth sounds warning 😂I typically can't stand mouth sounds, but the warning made them tolerable and amusing
This is what music is all about for the artist. A sound, or a feeling, that gets the creative juices flowing. It might take time to find the sweet spot, but in time the full song, or even a well places riff or fill comes to life.
Your single handedly making the harp a really cool instrument.
Thank you!!!
@@emilyharpist The pleasure is all mine.
The harp is already a really cool instrument ya baboon
Hey I thought Vollenweider did that already long ago… but yeah this is cool too.
The harp has always been one of the most fire instruments

I love this channel so much. It always makes me smile to see people nerding out over their passion and having fun.
Thank you! I’m really happy to have you here and we love nerding out about harp and gear!!
I think vs guitar+wah, the harp+wah is helped by how we're hearing the non-amped string sound, so the wah is more of an atmospheric background to still-crisp harp.
Oh my god...
PLEASE MAKE AN ALBUM.
I need your funky, harp tones to keep me company while I write.
hahah I'M ON SPOTIFY AND BANDCAMP!!! ❤️😂
I think for me, my disinterest in Wah is that the filter sweeps are often so much faster than I like....a really slow filter sweep just sounds awesome, especially with a slightly lower resonance.
I agree with the second part, that's typically how I use a wah. Try to sweep as slowly as I can usually using the higher end of the sweep more often than the lower. Supposedly you can adjust that with trim pots or something similar on the inside of some wahs, which I've done, since I don't incorporate that Funk/porn sound that everyone seems to immediately bust out the second they start playing a wah.
You mean 'Auto Wah' I think, Wah you control it with your foot.
Yeah I totally get that. I am by no means a pro or even an intermediate level guitarist, but I like to have fun while playing. Bought myself a CryBaby when I first started, and quickly found myself barely rocking it, and doing so as slow as possible. I personally like the mid to high range because it kind of "screams" if that makes any sense. I love how Adam Jones from Tool gently phases his wah and often holds it at the mids for a while before rocking back or forth. Makes you forget he's using a wah for a second.
What I like with the wah is that it just seems to ADD to the harp. It's like the harp sound is still there, and then you added a wah. It sounds really nice. Especially with the first one.
wow the youtube algorithm has blessed me today. stumbled across this sick video and most wonderful channel. i am so obsessed with this WahWah'd harp sound. pleeeeeaaaassseeeee somebody tell me this exists on an album or something somewhere. Honestly i would pay for a whole mixtape of Emily trying out different pedals and sounds on her harp like this. Please! give it to meeee!!!
Congrats on the Zzounds partnership! Wah sounds way cooler than I would have thought on Harp and omg I want a Rossie Filter! So cool!
Rossie is so fun! Everybody Wang Chung tonight! Thanks so much BWC 😊
I watched your video initially because I was interested to hear what a wah sounds like on a harp. But I continued to watch because of how open, honest, and unpretentious you are. It was a pleasure to listen to you. Thank you.
I kinda love this. It's so dreamy feeling. You could make awesome music to just zone out or fall asleep to with how pleasant and ethereal it is.
First three notes. and I'm already disappointed that it's not more prolific. That sounds amazing.
If you want to explore Wah more, try the sonuus Wahoo. It is a analogue 2 Filter Wah which is completely free programmable in the ranges and peaks you want to have. So you could customize your wah perfectly towards the needs of a harp. As far as I know it is the king of wahs, when it comes to versatility and in my opinion sound. This is more a fully equipped multimode dual filter of a synth than merely a wah pedal. Now i stop advertising, ;) Have lots of fun in doing what you are doing
Greetings from Germany
Wow that sounds SUPER cool! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of that before! I’m definitely going to look into that one, the range is a big factor when it comes to harp! The Wahcko does a great job at range selection, but this might be amazing!
Awesome my Hendrix Fuzz Wah ( 16 DB dialable boost ) is just way too muddy and then shrill it's ok for some things....but I tend to think one part is wrong...it's too wide a sweep and horrid at extremes with a tiny sweet spot.
@@emilyharpist much to explore....imagine what a moog murf would do?! A M Z I N G.
@@emilyharpist It is...and whatever you do, don't EVER try to feed your harp into a synthesizer circuit with dual resonant highpass and lowpass filters + panning under heavy modulation at audio rate.... else you could die laughing. 😋
Unexpectedly cool combo! Being able to filter each of your pickups through a different pedal was next level.
The harp is by its nature a melodic instrument, it made me wonder if you have ever approached it as one would a rhythm guitar. The string muting is what made me think of this. Great video!
String muting is an easy technique that requires no fancy technology....but when combined together with what's essentially an audio frequency modulator/wah pedal, allows for a plethora of interesting sounds.
I thought the Crybaby's tone was a little better, honestly, but you aren't wrong about them feeling and sounding clunky. The mechanics of the Crybaby work, but that's about all you can say positive about them. They're mechanically noisy, and yeah, they even kind of just "feel" clunky. I thought it sounded amazing with the harp.
Dude! Step mode with delay is just the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Also that progression you are doing to test this stuff out sounds like something I wrote on classical guitar. It's the 2 note thing you are doing.
When she plays the three pedals together, it just sounded otherworldly beautiful 🖤
Thank you!
The Cry Baby does make unwanted noises, but it sounds soooo much smoother and sharper.
Yeah I also thought it sounded a LOT better
It feels like the other is outputting clean harp with a wah filter while the crybaby sounds like it is shaping the whole tone more. I have the mooer mini wah and I feel like it has that same filter effect. I always feel like the crybaby effects the whole output unlike any other wah.
The spring and actuator is the same as a like $30 pedal is the problem
I really like this channel. She take the pristine and classic sound of a harp, which is already one of the most beautiful instruments to exist. And puts a modern twist on it by introducing electronic pedals and sounds. It’s pretty toight
Mad cool! Who knew wah would sound so good on harp? The textures are so calming.
Thanks Brandon!
The wah and filter combo adds so much more atmospheric depth to the harp. A harp on its own isolated is beautiful but I feel like the pedals create a fuller sounding musical piece (layered sounds ) in a live setting rather than relying on layering via multi recording/looping. TLDR this is a game changer for the sounds and I LOVE IT!!!
Man..I legitimately want more of this, it's so cool
You should also try a Morley wah, which uses an optical sensor instead of a worm and gear on a pot. It's the smoothest and doesn't get dirty and noisy and has the longest frequency sweep
I honestly did not expect it to sound so good!!! This is amazing :D
Thanks Connor! It was so much fun!
Wow, I love that sample & hold effect from the Spatial Delivery one. It reminds me a lot of the video game Katamari Damacy, specifically the part when you have to roll up all the planets and then the sun
Unexpected katamari reference! Hello, fellow Trash Ball fan!

Harps and wah peddles sound dreamy on their own. But together they make such a calm and sleepy sound.
I absolutely loved the "poppy" effect on special delivery.
Love the separation between the highs and lows with the different pedals on each. Makes a superbly spacey sound.
The ZVEX Wah Probe was a great pedal, it uses a theremin plate to determine how much it should affect the sound. Would be fun to see one of those on harp!
That one sounds really cool! I need to check it out!
Omg, now I need more harp with way pedal! That sound makes my soul happy. It’s SO good

Love how when he steps on the pedal for the first time, he mouths it out. Love passionate artists!
It's so fun watching you discover all these cool gadgets for your harp. I've been a guitar player and gadget guy since 1982 and honestly if I spent as much time practicing my instrument as I do playing around with guitar pedals and multi-effect units, I'd be pretty damn good by now instead of just a hobbyist, but it wouldn't be nearly as fun. Keep exploring the cool gear. I love your reaction to the new sounds. It is obvious you've already done all the practicing necessary to master the instrument anyways, so you might as well have fun being creative with some new sounds.
wah pedal harp is the sound I didn't know I needed in my life.
I really appreciate your unconventional approach to effect pedals.. most product reviews force me to attempt to decipher between cliched guitar playing and conventional sound settings what the unit may actually be capable of.. thank you
The "Spatial delivery" sounds like what was on the Metroid Prime OST or something. Shits REAL good.
Metroid Prime has one of the best OST’s EVER!!!
I'm more of an envelope filter fan (I like the Fender Pour Over Envelope Filter a lot) but you did a great job of making the wah work on harp. Another great video!

Emily you are absolutely adorable!!! You possibly have yourself a new side gig reviewing gear. I leaned a ton from this one video!! Great work.
Haha thanks so much! Reviewing gear has been my main gig for a few years!
One other use of wah is as a more static filter. Leave it in one spot or very slowly sweep it without reacting to any specific notes, it winds up sounding really throaty as it catches different resonant frequencies in the input signal.. Works really well going into heavy distortion, or before or after fuzz.
AKA the notorious 'cocked wah'
