Light Sleeper was an answer to Del on sleeping on my couch. When he says no I'm not in alarm is answering Del again whose second album was no need for alarm.
Still got this original pressing from 94, verse on Casual's album put me on to Saafir. Him and Ras Kass were on Key Kool & Rhettmatics 95 album, I bought the album without hearing a song just based on their cameos! Struck gold! Should do Key-Kool & Rhettmatic, Visionaries early days.
i would liked to have seen him develop another album with the framework of the last three songs as foundation: real circus, bent, joint custody, which get progressively more indecipherable. i guess that wouldn't have made commercial sense though
god bless yall niggaz for going in on that boy Saafir he one of the TRUE goats of this rap shit ... niggaz like Pharoahe Monch and Ras Kass know ... Kurupt knows. Saafir up there amongst the wildest to ever touch mics
In the discussion about the sound aesthetics. If you think about the title of the album “Boxcar Sessions” in conjunction with Hobo Junction you have a thematic reference to trains, train yards and graffiti (Mike Dream a famous train graffiti writer has a cameo on the album). I always called it the loco-motion as it sounds like a locomotive on the tracks… shitz deep son!
Wow, I didn't know the Casual song featuring Saafir. It's a perfect example of Saafirs style. In my opinion two of the best Emcees are from Oakland. Saafir and Del. Both in their own way have very weird styles, in a positive way. I love them both.
R.i.p Mike dream shout out to eyeque pokeone and rashanel from hobo junction coming from some one who bought boxcar session a lot of people didn't get his style even i had really listen to understand once I did it definitely opened up my horizons as to avant gard styles.
I really wish Saafir got waaaay more shine and success in the rap game, but his style definitely isn’t for everybody 😂 Especially coming up in the Bay when artists like Too $hort and E40 were the mainstays. Like yall said, Saafir and the Hobo Junction really represented that bridge between the lyrical “backpack” club and the streets. I think because of that, they weren’t as palatable for hip hop purists as the Hiero crew. On top of that, Hiero came from more well to do backgrounds than the Hobo crew. I’m mostly into 90s L.A. gfunk /Bay Area mobb music, but Saafir, Xzibit, and Ras Kass really perfected that ability to blend the streets with hip hop perfectly. Great video!! 👌🏾👌🏾 oh yeah fun fact ODB and E40 have the same birthday!! Plus E40 was on that Shimmy Shimmy remix with MC Eiht. That shit was one of a kind seeing two unorthodox dudes come together.
Yeah, I guess the more street-oriented side of Saafir/Junction could have had something to do with their lesser success compared to Hiero, but I don't know. I feel like there are a lot of factors. Like I said, Saafir established himself with a certain oddball style, then took a sharp right turn to a more conformist style that alienated his original base. And as great as Boxcar was, it also had a much more lo-fidelity sound than Hiero that would likely deter the radio and less adventurous listeners. Also, even though he was eventually on some big labels, Saafir and Junction just never had the major label support like Hiero did, nor a timeless anthem like 93 til Infinity. That song itself probably solidified Hiero pretty substantially. Another thing, I think, is that the rest of Hobo Junction just weren't that talented in comparison to Saafir, whereas every member of Hiero was highly skilled. Behind the scenes I also have a feeling that Saafir has never been the sort to play nice with record execs or industry peers. He seemed to find beef with all his bigtime cohorts like Shock G, Hiero, 2Pac, etc. who probably could have helped him out more if they wanted to.
@@extraordinaryrap you articulate a lot of thoughts i've had over the years about this obscure subject. my friends at the time gravitated more to hiero but they also liked hobo junction. i definitely gravitated more towards hobo junction and even contacted them at the time to gets tapes to try to sell in my area
Whoa! I don't know what this is, but it seems like it's right up my alley.... I've NEVER heard anyone doing a deep dive on Boxcar!!! I'm gonna revisit this when I'm more sober...
JZ, you and J Groove were dope as hell on production. Salute the whole Hobo JCT.... I hope y'all can get Saafir out of the basement and make some more dope music!

My first intro to saafir was come widdit off the street fighter soundtrack....that song still bumps btw...his flow really is like free jazz. He's just different. The shit he's come out with is dope as fuck but not everyone digs that cadence....
Excellent convo. I personally never thought Saafir had the best verse on Fear Itself. People need to go back and listen to Casual, he spit fire on every verse.
oh yeah and his label was to my memory a secondary entity spawned by QD3, the son of Quincy Jones, i may be wrong. but nonetheless Sauce wasn't big on advances so it was like they pressed it, but it was sold out-the-trunk, yay area style. so it probably took years to make it to Detroit because it had to walk. Saafir is bananas on the mic and a in person. #hoBLOWEDjunction
You are absolutely right brother had the hitlist on promo and it was definitely quincy jones. Is this j-smoov from brothers manifesto? if so much respect
Similar to graffiti, Saafir refused to compromise & sellout to mainstream. He definitely could have been commercially successful if he wished to. My mudahfoken hero.
He said "The mayor of my melee the master of my blue" as in having the blues. Bent has a bunch of hidden disses to other MCs such as the Roots, Pharcyde, Pep Love etc. i.e bent mission is doing a lyrical drive-by.
It’s master of my “milieu”. Means master of his environment. The lyrics were inside the cd booklet with the album credits. I used to read it like a book.. peace ✌🏼
