Arcana: Seal of Rimsala, Breath of Fire: War of the Goddess, and Super of Mana: Turbo are all extremely excellent improvements and I recommend all 3. I will say (and surprised it wasn't mentioned) that Secret of Mana Turbo also adopted the Secret of Mana Reborn translation which, in my opinion, really makes the game. The SAP team really a fantastic job with the translation and nearly doubled the memory for just the script. They absolutely should could get credit for his amazing the game is.
Looking at its list of features, Secret of Mana Turbo doesn't make any attempt to fix the major thing that makes the game a janky unplayable mess. There really needs to be something done about that hilarious magic system. The entire game boils down to "Stun the boss with magic, because if you don't, they're just going to stun you with magic." The game is terrible just for this one design choice. Great music, great art, decent melee combat, but the magic is trash.

Great vid. For those who didn't know. Reason some games were slow(or Zelda oot) was the countermeasures used to stop renters. Best example was ninja gaiden 3 horrendous difficulty. You could beat ocarina of time in 2\3 hours casually if it wasn't for the text slog or skip cutscenes. Not a problem nowadays.
Fire emblem PLUS for GBA has been a good set of reduxes. Visible health bars, danger zones, fixed growth system, hard mode unlocked already, etc. Good stuff, 9/10 would recommend.
I'll have to check out that Breath of Fire patch, i played that game too much as a kid. I cant play BoF2 without the retranslation patch (basically patches the game into its GBA version) along with a slightly lowered encounter rate and a slightly raised exp and zenny drop rate.
I'm pretty early into my first playthrough of Breath of Fire, and it's pretty rough. Been grinding levels in this first dungeon at 4x speed but still... I can't play at 1x because the movement is too slow! Might just start over with the patch.
Sin of Mana also reworks equipment entirely and adds pretty cool attributes to weapons, armour and accessories so you have reasons not to go for the biggest numbers available. That's a neat feature I wish was included in the remake.
The problem with that is, you don't know what they do. No description, no nothing. And that includes boss patterns. Some bosses are impossible to beat, unless you specifically know what to do (Dolan), and there are no hints on how to beat those bosses within that game. I don't know why people have this much issue with admitting some changes make games easier. Widescreen on Super Metroid definitely makes the game easier, being able to control the dash on ALttP makes the game easier and is clearly not how the mechanic is supposed to work. But it can make the game more fun, and people playing with those patches probably already played the games half a dozen times, so who cares that it makes the games easier?
I loved Chrono Trigger - Schala Edition. Added some meaningful quests related to Schala and cleaned up some other stuff. After playing the original so many times, Schala Edition is the only way I wanna play it now.
Great list! I wish I had some of these improvement patches playing some of these games as a kid! 😅 There are so many great patches to classic games now that just make the experience _better_ ! Aw, Super Mario Kart's uncensored patch deserves a shout-out, it makes the game even better by letting you race the Special Cup on 50cc and like its name, Bowser and Peach's victory poses are now uncensored. It's small, but really great.
@@autumnshinespark Peach and Bowser are supposed to drink from the bottle in their victory poses, but in NA and Europe, it's changed to them either playing with the bottle (Peach) or just holding on to it (Bowser). The patch reverts them to the Japanese originals.
That Breath of Fire patch looks like a game changer. I remember enjoying the gameplay of that game when I first played it, but the story completely bounced off of me without leaving an impression, and the menu navigation was a pain in the ass because of how poorly translated items were. (Also seems they hit a bit of a compromise on delocalizing Karn's design. Looks more like the original design while attempting to not look like blackface... I mean, I think they should have avoided coloring his lips at all if they completely wanted to dodge that problem, but this is definitely a marked improvement on his original look.
I highly recommend it with the addendum patch that doubles XP and Zenny rewards (this is probably only one of good things the GBA version did). It's probably the best way to play BoF1 now. All it's missing is the GBA portraits since I'm partial to those lol
Damn, I’ll keep a lookout for a finished version of that Super Metroid 16:9 hack. I recently did a 100% play through of the Mario World widescreen and it was a real breath of fresh air having the larger viewport
The Chrono Trigger+ hack adds everything in the bug fix patch plus ALOT more! They just did a update too so check it out you’ll definitely want to make a video on it once you play it!
The L/R buttons for "A Link To The Past" is definitely something that should have been in the original game. It makes perfect sense to have those buttons scroll left and right among the items, and it doesn't sacrifice any other functions.
For someone as nostalgic as me, rom hacks/patches are truly amazing. It's like new snes games are coming out with extensive hacks, not to mention snes9x with 60fps smooth gameplay. Also if you have not tried Final Fantasy VI T-Edition, I highly recommend that you do.
Just finished a playthrough of Arcana with the Seal of Rimsala patch. It's mostly good, but there is a major bug in the last chapter. A common enemy (Bishop) softlocks the game every time it attacks. Also, you can't run from them, even with Fog cards. It took many save/loadstates to get through. The Bishop Bug is really unfortunate, because I liked the mod overall.
@@autumnshinespark That's a shame, because I thought your mod was otherwise excellent. I noticed that the Bishop doesn't have an attack animation. Is that what causes the freeze?
@@autumnshinespark Hi Sarah, just wanted to say how much I appreciate all the work you've put into Arcana. I can feel the passion you have for the game, and without your improvements I would likely have never played it. You rock!
These patches to old 16 bit games that had bad translations is the reason I own a laptop. These old games always lost a lot in translation in future ports. Ff6 is still the best experience on the snes original but it had the worst translation. Phantasy star 2 is also hugely improved with patches that streamline grinding and the translation
Don't get me wrong,i love seeing people are taking time out of their day to update Super Nintendo games, NES games ever Genesis games. I think it is absolutely wonderful. I'm poor and I just don't have a computer and Ive never owned one. Even though I'm 41 years old, believe it or not I've just never had a computer. I mean yes I've been on the computer before but I've never owned one but this ROM hacking thing I don't know anything about at all whatsoever. But I have bought games that were hacks on cartridges before and they were absolutely amazing it's so cool to see what people can do to an older game to make it so much better
These sorts of patches do a great job illustrating how beloved these old games are. Thanks to the efforts of fans who dumped the ROMs online, and people taking the time to dig through them, we can tweak and mod the classics in ways that they were never designed for. If something's great, why not make it better, and if it's perfect, there's no other way to improve it than to have more!
Huh. I was randomly thinking of Seiken Densetsu 3 yesterday and how it's been like eight years since I last played it. Excellent timing learning about that patch right now.
Sometimes I mistake you for "the critical drinker" in my head somehow and scroll past your videos. They're always top quality though. Thanks for making them!

Easier doesn't always equate to fun and vice versa. YMMV.
@@migsmigs2425 Of course. But it can be both, and there's nothing wrong with it.
@@moonrazk I don't see anybody saying there's anything wrong with it. Do you?
I loved Chrono Trigger - Schala Edition. Added some meaningful quests related to Schala and cleaned up some other stuff. After playing the original so many times, Schala Edition is the only way I wanna play it now.
It's great seeing these older games still getting improvements.
Great list! I wish I had some of these improvement patches playing some of these games as a kid! 😅 There are so many great patches to classic games now that just make the experience _better_ ! I'm looking forward to see what new improvement patches other games receive. Some older games would benefit _greatly_ from an improvement patch!
What an incredible video. I imagine this type of video take a ton of research and it really is appreciated.
Thank you SNESdrunk, for gathering and sharing all this changes. It's nice to see people improving this masterpieces without damaging the core ideas. Now.... "Chrono trigger" bugs!!!???? I 🤔
PS: already see the changes in the site, i will probably not even notice any fix, but gonna try anyway
( don't need excuses to replay this👍🙂👍 )
This is excellent content!
What a great way to end my 12 hour shift. Snes drunk and chill
Aw, Super Mario Kart's uncensored patch deserves a shout-out, it makes the game even better by letting you race the Special Cup on 50cc and like its name, Bowser and Peach's victory poses are now uncensored. It's small, but really great.
Wait what was censored about them??
A Chrono Trigger widescreen hack would be amazing
I'm excited to try some of these patches now that I have my polymega! Great video as always
I liked the games that were mentioned in this video especially Clock Tower never played the game and thanks for the cool vid! Keep it coming!
Omg my Arcana mod got featured! I worked on it for ages, so thanks for playing it ☺️
The Chrono Trigger+ hack adds everything in the bug fix patch plus ALOT more! They just did a update too so check it out you’ll definitely want to make a video on it once you play it!
That video was awesome! Thank`s for the the recomendations!
The L/R buttons for "A Link To The Past" is definitely something that should have been in the original game.
It makes perfect sense to have those buttons scroll left and right among the items, and it doesn't sacrifice any other functions.
Hot damn! I’ve been dreaming of a BoF1 retranslation for decades. Thanks for the tip!
clock tower was ahead of its time
For someone as nostalgic as me, rom hacks/patches are truly amazing. It's like new snes games are coming out with extensive hacks, not to mention snes9x with 60fps smooth gameplay. Also if you have not tried Final Fantasy VI T-Edition, I highly recommend that you do.
I like how the Macross hack kept the “Configlation” menu intact
Just finished a playthrough of Arcana with the Seal of Rimsala patch. It's mostly good, but there is a major bug in the last chapter. A common enemy (Bishop) softlocks the game every time it attacks. Also, you can't run from them, even with Fog cards. It took many save/loadstates to get through. The Bishop Bug is really unfortunate, because I liked the mod overall.
Yeah, unfortunately it's a known issue I haven't been able to fix, but it doesn't seem to happen every time for me.
I gotta give this Chrono Trigger patch a try!
You could put together a basic pc using second hand parts for less money than the phone you're posting on cost.
If you're using a smartphone, you can emulate ROM hacks on there too (but I haven't tried it).
@@acrophis Holy shit, would love a video for that.
@@TVans-vs3gn Same.
You had to go and make me download 7 macross games, didn’t you? Hmmmph. I didn’t know the series even existed until today.
Gotta get back into the romhacking scene
Thanks, you just mentioned many of the games I played in the past, especially mana games and harvest moon caught me interest.
Great video. As if I needed a reason to replay some of the greatest games ever made again, plus some I haven’t.
love vids like these, added LTTP and super metroid redux to replace the og roms and breath of fire and clock tower to my snes collection
A patch I have been waiting forever for: a translation patch for the Ganbare Goemon games.
I need to check those out.
Those games are so underrated and so dang good.
There already are for the snes ones
Now I remember that I tried it before but couldn't get them to work.
Sometimes I mistake you for "the critical drinker" in my head somehow and scroll past your videos. They're always top quality though. Thanks for making them!
I looooove the hack/patches videos. It can be really hard to find great stuff that I know is out there.
Clock Tower WITH MOUSE SUPPORT?!?! As much as this game stops me from sleeping, I have to try it with the one thing I always wanted - it always peeved me that the SNES Mouse wasn't used!
great video as always! love your work!
I love these videos, I get a ragin zipper ripper everytime I see a SNESDrunk upload
Easy, champ.
Freaking clock tower, that game drove me nuts when I was a kid!
Final Fantasy VI has so many patches that you'll find a couple patches that are just compilations of others
Yeah, the ff6 hacking community is pretty lively. They share everything. However, I have found ROSE to be much more robust than TWUE.
@@sias.2569 Haven't checked out either of those patches, but they seem pretty cool
Anything specific you like about ROSE over TWUE?
@@robinsonnox9980
- fully named enemies and spell names. No abbreviation whatsoever with a few exceptions.
- soft reset by pressing L+R+select+start
- docile NPC’s (npcs more readily yield to the player if trying to occupy the same tile).
-Gau’s rages are alphabetized and their is an in game checklist that lets you see what rages are available on the veldt depending on where you are in the story.
-There are descriptions for dances and rages. The description box explains what the move does so using gau is not so random.
-(the previous two points put together results in basically an in-game bestiary)
-ROSE is built off of a bug-fix compilation patch. Meaning the game is now really polished. There about 60 or so bug-fixes in TWUE, where ROSE has over 150. There is also a patch included in ROSE that lets you put famous bugs back in (psycho cyan).
-both ROSE and TWUE are compatible with the music player (plays all tracks in the game). TWUE uses a unique version included in the patch files, but ROSE works with the normal music player just fine. Just patch the music player after applying ROSE.
So yeah, it has quite a few neat features. I also prefer the translation of ROSE to TWUE, but that can be subjective.
Nice! Bookmarking this video for future use. Also, personally the emulator I use has a folder where I can put IPS files so that I don't have to worry about using a utility once I get the improvement patch. Although I remember beating Arcana and trying my hand at Harvest Moon, I think the new translation patches are the ones that interest me the most out of this batch. As always, keep up the awesome!
Yay! More patches. I love these.
The slow elevators in Super Metroid added to the suspense.
Downloading war of the goddess now, been waiting for a decent translation hack since Ryusui did BoF 2
As a 'Filthy Casual' myself the Overtech Edition is a patch I will be trying out. Thank you for the heads up SnesDrunk ;)
Changing Link's pink hair is sacrilege!
Breath of Fire Patch for the WIN!!!
Excellent video, thanks from Germany!
