STORYLINE:
Six months of fighting between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has left the streets of Israel’s northern town of Kiryat Shmnoa nearly deserted, with closed shops, empty roads and malfunctioning traffic lights welcoming passers by.
The remaining residents in the northern town hoped for the best.
“We don’t know what will happen. We hope all will be good,” said restaurant owner Carlie Peretz.
He said he opened his restaurant "just a few months before the war begun. We invested here almost all that we had."
Approximately 60,000 Israelis evacuated from northern Israel after months of cross-border fighting.
"There is this kind of routine here that the state accepts, and this is something illogical,” said Kiryat Shmnoa resident Nadav Rankanpour.
"We need to return here, to do something so that we can return to our homes,” he added.
Since Israel's war in Gaza began six months ago, clashes have increased between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah.
Hamas, which rules Gaza and attacked Israel on Oct. 7, is also backed by Iran, as well as an umbrella group of Iraqi militias targeting U.S. military bases and positions in Syria and Iraq.
Israel considers Hezbollah its most serious immediate threat, estimating it has some 150,000 rockets and missiles, including precision-guided missiles that can hit anywhere in Israel.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group began launching rockets towards Israel one day after Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostage.
More than 33,200 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s subsequent invasion of Gaza, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
