What a great rabbit hole to go down- Steely Dan. FM, Deacon Blues, My Old School, Aja, Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, Bodhisattva, Rikki Don't Lose That Number. Great jazzy, funky rock.
Everyone of these are great. From this list he should do “My Old School”, “Black Cow”, or “Hey 19” next. I’ll also add some “Haitian Divorce”, “Don’t Take Me Alive”, “Your Gold Teeth”, “Home At Last”, “Reelin In The Years” too obvi. I can go on and on and on.
@@davexenos9196 Love “Everything Must Go”. The Dan couldn’t have made a better song for their last song on their last album. Sort of their farewell song and the lyrics tell a funny farewell story as well. Great call!
Steely Dan was 2 guys. Most of the musicians were invited to record with them. It was considered a major compliment to be asked. Guys WANTED to be invited to record with them. It was a badge of honor.
Owsley Stanley, the subject of the song, was a legendary guy. Brilliant engineer and prolific chemist of the purest LSD ever ("kitchen clean")...a renaissance man. No wonder that Kanye wanted to sample this for "Champion."
Steely Dan is notoriously the band that does all the songs you never knew who did them. We used to have a running gag at a place i worked where if someone asked what song was on the radio, someone would shout THE DAN. half the time that person was right.
You were onto something when you commented about the guitar on Kid Charlemagne. That solo was voted one of the top 3 rock guitar solos of all time . . .
It sounds like they have some bangers cause all they made was bangers and by bangers I mean that they took their time musically and lyrically to make every song sound amazing. They never called it in which is why they literally don’t have a bad song.
At the time, Steely Dan was remarkable, but some of the tastes were different then. Now, almost all of their songs were the result of hammering out every aspect of the song - the words and the sound - until they got it absolutely right. Prolific they weren't - but be damned if every song of theirs hadn't been forged to near-perfection. It sort of shows that nearly 50 years later, people still are fascinated by the sound of Steely Dan... their works endure.
Yes, Indeed. SD songs were ALL over the radio. Many of them still are. AM and FM too! "Don't Take Me Alive" is another great one from "The Royal Scam" with Larry Carlton, (from the Crusaders, some real good music there too!) playing guitar on both of them.
There isn't any real music today except for some country. I say some county. Country has also moved to a producer driven non-musician based production. I'm glad these videos are up even if they are just for clicks.
For the next Steely Dan song i would recommend [INSERT_STEELY_DAN_SONG_YOU_NEVER_HEARD_BEFORE_HERE]. It's really good maybe even my favourite from them. :D
Larry Carlton one of the Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Donald and Walter knew how to Pick The Best. A song about the most notorious Acid Dealer of All Time. This Entire Album is a Masterpiece. They are known Worldwide, but back in the day, they weren't "mainstream", but they have been around for 50 years now. RIP Walter Becker
I wouldn't call Steely Dan mainstream... They're sort of a genre unto themselves. Much like Pink Floyd. Very intelligent music recorded by incredibly talented and intelligent musicians. The production quality is so great... That's why every song sounds like a hit.
FM, Show Biz Kids, Dirty Work, Don't Take Me Alive and My Old School are just a few of the many great Steely Dan songs. They were perfectionists and it shows in every song. The best thing about them is every song is different from the next. Never going to pin one sound to these guys.
❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
Entire Album is GOLD
Many comments mention Mr. 335 The Legend himself Larry Carlton on guitar. It also had the great Bernard Purdie on drums.
This song is about lsd production
The person they're singing about was chemist Owsley Stanley
Huge radio hit makers. The jazziest rockstars ever!

@@mikewritz You picked 2 of my all-time favorites- Home At Last and Don't Take Me Alive. My Old School is on constant rotation.
Everything must go

Yeah they were huge, and I find their music to be timeless.

They smooth...
Thank you sir, uk!
They also didn't tour at this time-most mainstream acts toured to support their albums.
Owsley Stanley, the subject of the song, was a legendary guy. Brilliant engineer and prolific chemist of the purest LSD ever ("kitchen clean")...a renaissance man. No wonder that Kanye wanted to sample this for "Champion."
steely dan is your favorite bands favorite band . the aja album is acoustically perfect .
Dude, they had so many hits.... you will surprise yourself if you dig into Steely Dan!
Sophisticated cool
Steely Dan. Yesss!!!!!! take me back to 70s and 80s. Luv it. They had tons of hits.
HazeBruv is seriously champ, jeez we is hooked! Uk bricklayer👍
The guitarist was Larry Carlton. Every track on every album is incredible.
I'd make that every note.
kanye sampled this song in champion off of graduation, his music taste and how he picks and chooses his samples are insane.
They were all over the radio (mostly top 40 stations), and super popular with adults in the 70s.
Oh thank god. I gotta change my vibe. My heart needed this. Thanks brah!✌️😊
Steely Dan is notoriously the band that does all the songs you never knew who did them. We used to have a running gag at a place i worked where if someone asked what song was on the radio, someone would shout THE DAN. half the time that person was right.
And if it wasn’t Steely Dan who did the song it was probably The Cars.
You were onto something when you commented about the guitar on Kid Charlemagne. That solo was voted one of the top 3 rock guitar solos of all time . . .
Sure subscribed sir!
FM 🙌🏻 🔝
Michael McDonald sings only 2 words; twice in succession in the background. And its just a perfect accent. Bring him in once, for a treat.
Their songs are just amazing on every album, start to finish!!
It sounds like they have some bangers cause all they made was bangers and by bangers I mean that they took their time musically and lyrically to make every song sound amazing. They never called it in which is why they literally don’t have a bad song.
My fav: Black Cow
Had you been around when this came out,it would have been on your play list too kindest regards
It seems main stream. Because they inflyenced so many people. But the were the first to do alot of what they did. They are the greatest duo ever.

Your are an American right? You have just discovered one of your many national treasures.Cheers and stay safe!
They did not make a bad song. Welcome to the rabbit hole
Next recommended Steely Dan song:
“FM (No Static at All)”
Green Earrings. But only when you're ready to lay down a real stink groove.

I think Larry Carlton played the lead on Kid Charlamagne.

Not mainstream at all..lol...a lot.of their songs never made to the c radio. The best studio band ever!
Listen to Hey 19
"FM" is one of my favorites....you should also listen to "Don't tale me alive" by Steely Dan
I wouldn't call Steely Dan mainstream... They're sort of a genre unto themselves. Much like Pink Floyd. Very intelligent music recorded by incredibly talented and intelligent musicians. The production quality is so great... That's why every song sounds like a hit.
They're jazz fusion/pop rock. They're at the pinnacle of the genres, but they aren't alone there.

Listen to ALL of Aja.... trust me!
