    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад +3

      Maintenance? For the boat I don't have any maintenance for that. For the engine, I change the oil every 20 hours. For the mud motor part of it, I grease it yearly with a grease gun. Thats about it for maintenance. The rig does fine in open water here in Florida. I don't take it on windy days

    @austinheil8383 5 лет назад +3

    Did you have to re enforce your transom for the 13 ho I’m trying to decide between the 13hp or 6.5hp harbor freight for mud motor. But can decide if weight would be an issue for the 13hp?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  5 лет назад

      The transom on this Alumacraft is not that strong. If I were to get a boat again, I would go with a tracker. I think it would be fine on the tracker, but the Alumacraft doesn't have much support on it, so it starting failing, and I had to brace it. The 6.5hp was fine on it, but the 13hp was too much even though the boat is rated for a 15hp

    • @austinheil8383
      @austinheil8383 5 лет назад +1

      But horsepower wise u would go with 13hp?

    • @austinheil8383
      @austinheil8383 5 лет назад +2

      And for the shaft think it’s worth the extreme duty or just stick with standard from swamp runner

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  5 лет назад

      @@austinheil8383 I like the 13hp. The 6.5 is great for general use, but if you plan on going through thick mud and grass, you need the extra torque of the 13hp. The Bayou bushing sounds pretty awesome from what I'm told. If you have the money for it, it sounds like you will never have to replace them or worry about them failing. If I were to get another kit, I would go with the extreme duty, 100" shaft

    Tips for more speed? Was running a 16 hp mudskipper on the 100” shaft with a 8” prop getting 19-20 MPH by myself, same setup except with a 13HP predator now getting about 13MPH. Should I go with a bigger prop you think?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад +3

      To know if you are running the correct prop or I should say maximizing the horsepower and RPM range, you need a tachometer to tell your revolutions per minute that your engine is spinning and is also directly correlated to how fast your prop is spinning. Get a tachometer like this amzn.to/2UMXv6W and see where you're rpms are at. You should be at 3400 to 3800. If you're over that, you can do a bigger prop, if you're below it, you have too big of a prop on and need a smaller prop.

    Just curious what you think about the duromax engine. Seems to have more HP and torque that the predator and cost less $$

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад +1

      It depends on which engine you look at. Last time I looked, the Duromax had a higher "rated" horsepower but still had the same CC's that the predator engine had so I think it was a marketing thing. You can just look up the measurements of the cylinder size and length of the pushrod and all that to see if it differs to give them more horsepower with the same amount of displacement and I know for a fact that the predator engines have more people purchasing them so you have a large customer base to ask questions to when you have an issue. Also there will be more accessories and parts that will fit a predator rather than a duromax unless its interchangeable. If its interchangeable then its still the same engine no matter what company labels/rates their engine

    I live on a pretty quick flowing river in arkansas. You think a longtail would be okay with the current?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад +1

      I would think so. The longtail is good because you can also use it as a rudder to steer. So if you are doing down stream, having the longtail behind you can really help with the position of the boat. You just need to be confident with it and know how to handle your boat with the tail. Practice in calmer water and then once you feel good with it, then start stepping it up. Another good thing about a longtail is that if you have climb at all, the longtail allows you to reach so the engine wouldn't bottom out like an outboard would if you were climbing up a dam or getting high centered on a long. This is a cool video if you have a facebook and you're thinking about rapids - facebook.com/mix.matt1/videos/3839826579368314/

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад +1

      @@nickbeard2821 Yeah, everyone has their own special case. The good thing about a longtail is that it is less expensive so if you don't like it, you can at least recoup some money from reselling it and not lose as much as you would from buying and selling a surface drive. Best of luck to you and thank you for the support 😁

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 года назад +1

      @@ethantauscher2888 I do not know. You wouldn't really gain or lose speed. Your shaft length doesn't determine that. If anything I would think it would decrease speed due to the increased friction of having more surface area contacting bushing in the shaft. Speed is the job of the prop. The length of the tail determines the tail weight which directly affects the way it handles when it comes to how heavy or light it feels on the tiller handle. It does affect the prop position, and may allow me to reach a higher speed that is easier to handle due to placing it at or near the wake, but I wouldn't think it would increase my speed. It would just make it easier to control at the tiller handle. I would like to test it and see, but I do not have the capital to invest in another shaft at this point in time.

    Question. Why do you take the prop out the water and put it back in??

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 года назад +1

      This helps to clear vegetation that may get caught on the prop or shaft. It allows the prop to get to a higher RPM and spin/sling the grass free

    So did the black rubber bushings help keep it weedless?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  6 лет назад +2

      Yes. In this footage, the new 3D printed spacer that goes in between the prop and the end shaft bushing with the zip tie, is on there. It worked great. The zip tie never broke, and the weeds never got stuck on the shaft. So far, I would say it is truly weedless. I idled through that thick grass and it never stuck. If I did that without the zip tie spacer, it would have wrapped, caught, and I would have been plucking grass from in between the end bushing on the shaft and the prop.

If the longtail goes down, the trolling motor will work. If the trolling motor stops, the paddle will work. Then there's always a couple of longtail buddies that could be called up 📞
