Who couldn't use more organization around the shop? In this episode I tackle drawer organization in my new workbench (bit.ly/3QWVIbE) as well as an easy upgrade to my upper cabinet (bit.ly/3D6UwwF) spray paint storage.
Drawer organization is so helpful when done correctly. It makes your workflow smooth and allows you to be efficient when building projects. It is, however, very easy for drawers to become overly cluttered and messy. The first step in any organizational step is to be intentional. You should evaluate how you use your workspace and then plan on what you want quick access to in that drawer. In my case I want quick access to things I'm always reaching for at my workbench like layout tools, marking utensils, and T-Track accessories.
I start by creating a section in the drawer for my common layout tools using Kaizen foam. This foam is produced in layers so that you can easily remove constant depths for clean tool pockets. I've been a fan of this stuff for a while now and happen to have a couple of sheets laying around.
Next I create a sliding "caddy" that will fit over the insert we just made. This shallow caddy will have things like T-Track clamps, pencils, and sharpies. I make this out of some scrap 1/2" MDF.
Finally I create yet another insert to sit next to the kaizen foam insert for other odds and ends. It's important that I don't just "fill it up" for the sake of it, but stick to my plan of what I want to have in this drawer.
Moving on to the spray paint cabinet. I have accumulated a lot of different spray paints over the years and storing them has always been a challenge. A conventional shelf in a cabinet does not let you see past the first row so the back rows often fade away into the great abyss!
I'm going to solve that by creating a shallow "inner shelf" that mounts to the inside of the cabinet door. This will allow me to have visibility to roughly 2x the spray paint cans in this cabinet. It's not the perfect solution but it's one that should make you life easier. You can also add something like this to any cabinet for that little bit of extra capacity.

A tip for cutting the Kaizen foam: heat the blade of the knife with a candle. It cuts like butter and leaves cleaner cut edges.

Put those cans of paint in the cabinet in beer six-pack holders. They fit perfectly and makes it easy to get 6 cans out at a time. You can keep similar shades together.

In your kaizen foam, you can use a small piece of copper tube (1/4", 1/2", etc.), heat it up, then touch it to the side of the foam where you've cut out to hold an item. It melts instantly and makes a nice little finger pull slot to easily grab the stored item. Great content as always. Cheers!

This was VERY HELPFUL to me. AWESOME!!!! Another way to store your spray paint cans is lying down - like you do with water bottles/containers. I think you can buy those holders for water bottles (you know the personal bottles for a person - maybe take to the gym, or whatever) not giant bottles. Ones that are the size of paint spray cans. That way you can see the colour of your tins or you can label them on the top.

Another idea that might give you more storage space in those uppers with only one level of cans to glance at at a time. In my kitchen I had a similar problem, as anyone with upper kitchen cabinets used for spices and whatnot does. My solution was to take out all the shelves and toss 'em into a fire bowl. I built two racks that took up the entire space top to bottom in each upper mounted on bottom mount slides with a couple waxed hardwood rails in the top to keep everything centered. I got two such pullouts in each upper that were both double sided and allow for only one row deep on each side. I can actually fit more in those uppers now and see and access all of it easily. There's no reason it wouldn't work just as well for spray paint cans.

One idea hit me when watching this; what about a horizontal storage rack for your paint cans, sorta like a wine rack? just have to label the tops of the cans and you're good to see everything at once. Dunno if they'll fit with the new door rack but it's something to look into. Keep up the good work!

An easy hack for spray cans is to lay them down and nest them like bowling pins. The caps are genuinely representative of the color of the paint. It is easy to pull out the one you want and then the rest collapse down to fill in the gap. Then just return the used can to the top row. I don’t have upper cabinets so I simply use 2 recycled plastic crates laid on their side on a top shelf to house all my spray cans. If it’s a special finish just write a description on the cap top with a paint pen.
