The level of ignorance and lack of understanding of how this music works/functions is upsetting. I have no problem with someone not liking jazz or the performance of standards in a more traditional style but the amount of disrespect directed towards these unbelievable musicians in the comments is sickening. All of these players either directly taught or helped guide already incredible younger talents such as Mike Moreno. Scofield, Metheny, Moreno, Rosenwinkel, etc all know how to play in this kind of setting and spent years developing there bop vocabularies and arsenal of standards. Begin to actually develop your ears, develop your timing and you will understand! If there is anything to complain about with regard to the video it would be the lack of proper micing and mixing and ultimately the disservice that it has done to these master musicians

Agreed. Nothing like youtube comments to bring out the trolls.

Emiliano Trevena thank you - you don't have to like jazz. It's certainly not for everyone. But to then go on and make unbelievably ignorant comments like you see here...but you know this: these guys are are obviously admired by serious musicians the world over. So these poor hapless people who think they the right to post their ignorant, uninformed nonsense have absolutely zero credibility. I suppose I am biased in that I know both Pete and Vic and have been lucky to TRY and play with them both. They are two of the sweetest human beings on the planet. Just beautiful souls. THAT is why they can play at this level. Rory is a fine musician as well
....ugh.... I just can't stand these fools who compare him negatively to anyone. Don't like like it? Fine. No problem. But don't be an asshole like the dumb chick or the dumb guys with their comments. Besides - they really need to get a life if they have the time to expose their lack of taste and class in a public forum.

The 2nd tune is Alone together. No idea for the other one...

  • @babinm

why is one outclassed by the other. Is their something in their use of the guitars that you see or just pulling the idea from a part of your anatomy?

Vic absolutely outclassses Rory Stewart here. Rory is much less confident, he clams a lot more notes, and his time is not as solid.

I am really glad that some commenters below think like just in the way I do. I have been listened to all the jazz guitarists in history for years and always looking for fresh stuffs to my ear, and now I am sick of it. Among all those guitar players, who finally remain on my list is, only Bill Frisell. John and Pat also left a great footsteps and now they are now into their old ages. BF still got something. Ideas never worn-out and still giving us a musical message with his humble attitude.
Let's just think about how many guitarists out there always play all the old-fashioned out-dated notes and obvious pattern playing on certain chord changes. I am not trying to pull them down. These faculties might be all good guitarists, but not a good musicians to me. (I already knew how each of them sounds like before watching this. And what I find is they sound just same as they did 20 years ago when I first heard them) Their playings are not melody-driven which is quite usual to typical jazz guitarists. Peter can be excused for this because he, at least, got some good sense on sincere melody making. But no more inspiration from him because he is still doing the same thing over decades. He is still visiting a lot of workshops over countries worldwide but I doubt he can give a meaningfull guide to students to help them finding their own voice.
Chop-Oriented Bebop Guitar sound is nowadays boring as hell. They are all in prison called effing "Fretboard". Pointless pattern playing and self-repetition endlessly. If some academic features added to that, that is the worst.
Glad that a few young ones like Gilad are looking for new ways. but It's not enough. I hope someday a real character will appear into this field. Otherwise, it will always be like this as lame bourgeois salon music while providing a number of unpromised guitarists out from conservatories who would sooner or later quit playing.

I can't listen more than 2 minutes... 50 + years ago jazz sounded much better.

I used to just fart around on the guitar and it sounded something like this. I always thought it was terrible but maybe I should buy the cheapest guitar I can find and go out on the road.

Seems bernstein is going down a new path, and im not getting it.hes a great player with a wonderful guitar, but as of a year or so hes played some awful free form stuff, where melody doesnt play a large part.oh well ill listen to others for a while .i guess im not as avantguard as i thought.

+Viktor Séthy It's just the name of the university, "The New School". It doesn't mean it's a new school of jazz.
