  • The Model 3 is known for great visibility out the windshield, but its trunk height makes seeing cars and objects close to the ground difficult. I put this video together because I often hear other Model 3 owners complaining about this, but they didn't know these easy ways to improve your sightline over the trunk.
    0:00 Block sun coming through glass roof with visor
    0:50 Trunk heigh versus seating position
    2:18 Adjust seat to highest comfortable setting
    3:40 Adjust seat with foot on dead pedal
    4:24 Adjust steering wheel to meet outstretched palms
    5:20 Adjust mirror to take advantage of parallax
    6:17 Comparison of mirror positions in traffic
    7:19 Using backup and repeater cameras alone

    Those are all great ideas. I’ve had my Model 3 for almost 8 months and I’ve learned to compensate for poor rear visibility. But armed with some of your ideas, I’ll go back and play with some of the adjustments. Previously I’d only thought about comfort but I bet I can find a set up that is comfortable and safer!

  • @danoberste8146

    When no one is in the passenger seat you should move the passenger's headrest so that it is coincident with the B-pillar. This reduces the amount of your field of vision that's blocked looking to your right (or left for RHD countries).
    People have suggested to Tesla for there to be user profiles for the passenger seat positions like there are for drivers. If they did, this suggestion could be automatic. I have a profile for "vacuum" that moves the driver's seat forward and up for when I'm vacuuming the back seat. It'd be nice if the passenger seat would get out of my way too.

    That was amazing. I finally got to test drive a Model 3 last month and was surprised how poor the visibility out the back was. I drive a small sedan with a high trunk and was surprised the M3 was even more difficult to see out back (though front visibility is unmatched in the M3!) Love the idea with the mirror. Never thought of that. Also thanks for sharing what you learned from performance driving instructors. Adds a lot of credibility to you seat positioning suggestions.

    What an awesome video, Cameron! I'm going to try your seating tips in my Model 3. Since dozens of different driver profiles can be set up, it makes it really easy to try out different ideas and options without losing my original settings, with the exception of the manually adjusted rearview mirror. Most of the "professional" car journalists out there, Consumer Reports is the worst one, bitterly complain how distracting it is to search through menus to change options, rarely ever mention this feature that sets Teslas apart. Most cars, even ones that cost hundred of thousands of dollars, just have buttons 1, 2 & 3, and who knows what they control?

      Yes, parallax is like voodoo magic. It doesn't necessarily move the images the way you'd expect based upon how you're moving a lens, but the effect is very real and very useful when you make it work for you.

    one more thing about 9&3 is that you can make quicker steering wheel movements, and you can quickly move more with 9/3 than 10/2. that and your hands can lock into place, with 10/2 your hands have more leeway. also get more than 90 degree movement quickly without having to readjust your hands
    but 10/2 is still the preferred holding position on some cars because of bad car steering wheel ergonomics.

    First, many thanks for a really informative video.
    Considering purchasing a tesla model y and took one for a test ride on Saturday. It is a pretty peppy little car but was disappointed trying to look through the tinting in the rear hatch for viewing traffic in the rear view mirror. Many thanks for the tips on adjusting the rear view mirror. I was really excited when i saw that you could adjust the display to show the rear view at full brightness on the lower portion of your video display. Then came the update which dimmed the top portion of the video display. What a bummer!!!! I see you video has a little age on it. Did they by chance go back to full brightness on the full display????? One can only hope, because this was a perfect solution the the rear view traffic viewing on the vehicle.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  4 года назад +2

      @Jim Arnold That's a great point I hadn't considered! A mirror allows us to focus at the actual distance of the object behind us, which is easy for our older eyes. A screen requires us to focus at the screen's distance, which might be OK with bifocals when it's low on the dash, but could be problematic when it's high like a rear view mirror.

    • @JimArnold6
      @JimArnold6 4 года назад +1

      @@TheTechofTech The Model 3 screen is a good distance for "old" eyes. I do wish the Model 3 driver side mirror adjusted further out to the left. It doesn'tt go out far enough. Ideally you should be able to rest your head on the window and move the mirror out so you only see a sliver of the car. That covers the blind spot. Great video. I'm going to try adjusting my RV mirror and seat position.

    So how to you adjust the OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRRORS to eliminate blind spots?????

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 года назад

      No special way with a Tesla, and there are plenty of videos out there showing different ways to do that. You will never *eliminate* blind spots. You can only move them to where they're easier to check by moving your head.

  • @oorcinus
    @oorcinus 3 года назад

    Getting the seat high might help with looking out back, but you end up getting the A pillar bridge obscuring every single traffic light you stop at. Instead of seeing the lights at the stop line, you’re looking at your (folded) sun visors.

    • @oorcinus
      @oorcinus 3 года назад

      Also, your blind spot / repeater camera advice does not make any sense. The purpose of blind spot checks is not to spot cars *as they pass from the rear and through the blind spot*. It’s to spot cars that are driving at the same speed, that you *DIDN’T* spot in the rear view. Same applies to camera views.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 года назад

      That's certainly intersection-dependent, and I'm sure that could be a bigger problem in some locations than here in Raleigh. It only happens at a few intersections I ever frequent, and since I have the FSD computer, I can just watch the color change on the screen, then duck a bit to confirm.

    • @TheTechofTech
      @TheTechofTech  3 года назад

      You definitely missed what I was saying with the blind spot part. I was using moving cars to show how they are represented in the top part of the rear view no matter where they are or what they're doing right up until they're right next to you. Way easier to demonstrate with a car passing than trying to get cars to match your speed at different distances from you.

    Coming from a motorsport point of view, I disagree with your body, hand, arm position on the steering wheel. Try turning the steering wheel full lock with your position and you'll find you have to stretch out more to turn. This will move your shoulder away from the seat. The gangster, straight arm steering is not very efficient.
