Ain't That Peculiar- Marvin Gaye

- TV Appearance, 1965. One of the more interesting things I learned in a tell-all book by George Nelson about Motown that I read in high school was the fact that it had a 'charm school'.
Motown's founder, Berry Gordy, hired etiquette experts to teach the artists, who were mostly from poor 'ghetto' backgrounds, how to walk, talk, and even stand.
The idea was to make Motown's artists stand out from other black artists. By polishing their rough edges, Gordy also hoped to make them more appealing and 'acceptable' to the record-buying white audience.
And despite the belief of some insiders of the established hardcore rhythm & blues scene that Motown was trying to make its artists 'more white' to make white folks happy, Gordy's idea actually worked: not only did Motown succeed in introducing R&B and soul music to the mainstream public and crashing down racial barriers in music; it also scored more hits, sold more records, and created more stars than any other 'black' music label, not to mention providing proof that black folks could make it in America, and even become wealthy. - Видеоклипы
play it again.. and hear the bass this time... James Jamerson.
CLEAR UP PICTURE , THIS IS A DEFINITE TREASURE.
Thanks outstanding!
This song never loses its impact, or gets tedious, actually seems to get better the more you hear it. An uncommon feat.
I keep looking at this over and over maybe its because it makes feel 18 again, but just look how simple the dance is YET it goes with the music, great just great. None of the big time BS of today.
Marvin soul we lost a legend Motown will always live on

The 60s will forever be an amazing decade!
Motown royalty with a royal performance!
He would write the sequel to what's going on, updated
Does it get anymore Detroit than this? Written by Smokey. Sung by Marvin. The back up singers were the Andantes. Recorded at Hitsville U. S. A. on West Grand Blvd! Makes me feel so proud to be from the Motor City!
Wish i was around to witness these times?????
Happy Heavenly Birthday Marvin!❤ Continue to RIHP Emperor!❤
Time to pay up Pharrell! Can't mess with Marvin Gay!!
True
Marvin didn't think he needed the 'charm school', and he was right. He was a stubborn kind of fellow.
Allso groups from liverpool ex seftons hideaways merseybeat 😅s Tom Evan's Pete ham badfinger 2:54 ❤
I love that song
@Ferstday
You could have added in your bio, that Marvin didn't need the charm school, as it was reported by David Ritz (Marvin's biographer, Motown insiders and others) he already had class and good breeding.
So THIS is where Pharrell gets his songs from. Nothing original in Hollywood anymore.
Hi i had two black and white clipps of tempts singing my baby and dont look back but they went from you tube do you think we will get them back i was sick when they got taken off.
I love the finger snappin bouffant intro...
Marvin is still the best!
UYea Berry Gordy made all the money. I read George's book as well. You missed the part about the "shady" contracts he had his acts sign & how disgruntled they became.
Ahmet Ertegun loved this song (but had little enthusiasm for Motown) and once said it was a shame Atlantic Records, his company, missed the chance to have Marvin join their label after he left Motown in the late 70's. Instead Columbia Records got a new contract with him, but not long before he was killed.
i love marvin & i have lived the first part of this song: u do me wrong & i'm still crazy about u;
stay away 2 long & i ant do without u. I've grown to no when someone doesnt want 2 b with me...thanx 4 posting & thanx to the late great MG
MARVIN GAGE IS COOL AS FUCK
Now that I am going on 66 and know longer working. I have this time to go back to my youth and see how lucky I was to be around as a teen when all this was hot. I must say Marvim is one of my top 10, Your music will live forever.
@davidlangzelli That was 4/2/39 to 4/1/84. Just saying.
Wow. Marvin is tall.
COOLEST VOICE IN MOTOWNJ
funny how they had the female dancer at the end stare right up at him.
One person disliked this? Ain't that peculiar :-P
My Dad’d version is better🎉. Godly didn’t genre tho.
Ya all should be surprised to hear a Nicaraguan
I can tell this was live b/c MG sang this differently... as a matter of fact BETTER than the actual recording, TBH [like Stevie Wonder - yet another Motown alum still does to this day]. Very dated w/ MG's highwater drainie pants and the mid-'60s Zombie Mod style and the Bob Fosse-ish choreography. The Beatles [and the Rolling Stones] were hot then.
this was NOT lip synced like a lot of" live" TV performances, my best karaoke song
marvin is the best....
marvin e muito bom mesmo!
=p
So cool & good looking
Japan's version was great as well, although they pretty much made it their own, seeing as it doesn't share the same melody or tempo.
Go over to Jackie Wilson, "Lonely teardrops." When he is on the staircase! RUclips. This is when Motown was born.
What is clear now, but not when I was a child. You can clearly hear Ms Warwick singing backup.
I hear this and I am 18 again in 1965, if you ask what the time was about this is it.
Yeah many artists today could benefit from charm schools like they had back then.
Yeah Marvin is great.
What a great uplifting song!
I was 12. Going to the local swimming pool looking at the boys!
Marvin Rules
Sad now his career is over.
Life
I hear the Gaye family is going to also sue Arsenio for looking way too much like Marvin in this video!
Especially Stephen.
sigma - stronger :)
