  • Do I hate Dior Sauvage?
Well, no. I don't love it either, but I cannot say that it is an objectively terrible fragrance.
    I like it. It's fine.
But it's not simply its scent that has affected its status in Frag Comm--it is the way it is talked about and used. If you have watched a single video talking about Dior Sauvage is, then you've seen what I'm talking about.
Nonetheless, I thought it would be fun to revisit my initial review of this fragrance from October of 2016...how did past Justin feel about Dior Sauvage, and how does current Justin feel about it now?

Neat to see you come back to this. I'm at about 110 bottles of niche and designer and this is still in my top 5 bottles. Not because I think it's the best at any one thing, but because it is good at everything. I imagine this would be considered my white t-shirt or run errands scent. When I want to feel nice after a shower I may spray it on before bed. I agree that this is a scent that did nothing wrong on it's own, yet it's a victim of its own success. I'm in the midwest and it's rare to run into anyone who collects fragrance, so this still holds some magic in public.

@@stayfreshproductions cuz that's the reason why we buy fragrances. If you're alone in the world, there's no need for you to smell so good. You'll just enjoy nature and hygiene in general. We are social creatures. You found out someone could smell really good when you were young. You appreciated that. Some would like it so much to the point they'd give compliments. We don't naturally have Sauvage scent as we were born. All these signature scents are there to impress other people, therefore to get compliments.

I never fell out of love with Suavage just revisit it every once a while. Dior did exactly the same thing to Suavage as they did with Fahrenheit. Dior just makes the best designers that get revisited and hyped as time goes.

I have the EDP I bought during my fragrance journey eventhough I resisted buying in the first place. I remember smelling it at Sephora and l liked how it smelled but I didn't buy it tho. Months later I received a Sephora gift card and I ended up buying a bottle. I wear this as my dumb reach when I can't decide what to wear. It's definitely compliment getter everytime I wear it. IMO it just works. The whole Sauvage line just works and will stand the test of time.

Myself, I have no problems with Sauvage in itself. All the opposite, if it ends up rousing the passion for fragrances in some people or serves as a stepping stone into looking into some other lesser known choices, I feel it has its place. For me personally, ambroxan in itself isn't the issue but just the peppery, stingy astringency mixed with the ambrox of the EDT is just not moving me. Elixir is definitely better however at that prince point I'll pass since I can get niche things I would rather wear. That said, as someone who generally loathes Summer and "freshies" and who loves Winter and dark, heavy fragrances, I think it's just a matter of preference. I still respect Sauvage for what it is, I'm not like "ewww Sauvage, that's for plebs" like some elitists do, that's not my style.

Another great video! Savage is going down the path of a Drakkar Noir, Cool Water and Aqua Di Gio. An easy to wear fragrance that is mass appealing. I wear the edt as a mindless grab and go where I know I am going to be in a crowded situation. So I don’t own the EDT, but the EDP of Dior Sauvage is actually what got me into fragrances. I was gifted the fragrance two years ago before knowing anything about it as a 23 year old, and immediately loved the DNA. Before that point, I had Dolce and Gobanna light blue as my signature and it was my first foray into “modern” perfumery. I personally love the bergamot opening and sharp metallic finish, characteristic of a Dior fragrance. My experience with that fragrance was the catalyst to try other masterpieces like Oud wood, Dior Homme Intense, Ganymeade, Layton etc.
In general, I am a person that does something becuase I want to do it, rather than for others. I don’t mind compliments in certain settings (my girlfriend, mom, close friends) but I don’t go into fragrances with the mindset of “getting something for compliments”. I’d buy something if I enjoy the way it smells and have a practical use for it. I see how you could get a negative perception about this fragrance because of the way it’s presented in the frag comm. like I said I love the DNA and smell and it’s still my signature, but even know I sometimes don’t reach for it because it is actually too strong and projecting even with two sprays.

I have had a few samples that did almost convince me to buy the full presentation, but Prada won out. The magic lies in it's sillage and it's one of the best dumb reach fragrances out there that gathers compliments left and right. It had fallen victim to its success since everyone is wearing it, but I don't really care since I have enough different fragrances to wear if I want to smell unique.

I definitely like your new approach compared to your old approach. Long story short, I tried DS EDT almost a year ago now, long after the hype train had left the station. And it was nice, shower gel fresh on me. I did get a compliment, but it was from a subordinate at work trying to climb the ladder. However, I liked Bleu De Chanel better and bought a full bottle of that instead. Months later my buddy asked me for a recommendation of a mass appeal frag. He was wearing 1 million and some coworker of his told him he smelled like crap 🤣 So I recommended Dior Sauvage. When I smell it on him, it's a sharp strong cinnamon type spice. I actually enjoy it enough that it made me want to try it again. So I do not care about what current trend we're in, if I enjoy the scent, I'm going to wear it.

unfortunately it has been reformulated to a soapy kind of scent, so if you buy a bottle, you’ll have to buy a batch from 2017 or before. the release of a new flanker usually means reformulations of the flankers before, other brands do the same (i. e. I own both a 2017 formulation and a 2023 formulation. The older formulation has more of a peppery smell while the newer one has more of a fresher scent but not as long lasting as the older batch. Performance is still 8 hours but my olderr bottle was easily 10+ hours

It is quite simply masculine, fresh and invigorating. It's like wearing it can bring about some kind of primal urge to kick the day in the ass. I prefer it's slight sharp texture over the more common powdery or creamy textures of popular alternatives. I feel it also mixes well with people's natural smell, and so lends a touch of uniqueness to each wearer.

I remember testing a sample of it, not long after Chanel released Bleu de Chanel EDP. My first reaction was, this is a clone.
However later on a second test, I concluded that it was for sure a take on Bleu de Chanel, but a middle of the road between the EDT and the EDP. But not as civilized as both of them, nor that close to be a clone. A louder (in the face)long lasting version of the Chanels and I knew it would be appealing, specially for younger people.
Since Bleu de Chanel EDT as been one of my favorite Summer fragrances for many years, but one with moderate projection and longevity. I mainly use it around the house. The EDP misses the joyful zesty factor I love so much for days wearing, so I use it for Summer evenings.
1 or 2 years years later I bought Eau Sauvage, with the idea to use it on Holidays, mainly for long hiking tours. As it will last 8 hours easily. In the end I only took it with me once on vacation, because I get tired of the scent pretty fast (1-2 hours).
For example I prefer Bvlgary Acqua Amara, or D&B Light Blue PH, for very much the same purpose.
In terms of compliments from strangers, I don't count friends and family, I only got a compliment for Bleu de Chanel le Parfum!
From a young lady behind a counter at least 2 meters away from me. It was 30 minutes after testing it on my wrist, the day it arrived in a local store. just 2 sprays one on each back hand.

I do agree. Sure wanting to wear a fragrance to have it last long and make people compliment you is fine. But that’s not what the main purpose should be. It should be, you’re wearing it because you like the smell, it becomes your favorite and you know it makes you feel good to wear when you’re going out or whatever it is you’re doing. Don’t just simply wear it to impress others. But if you want a fragrance that stands out more and isn’t overplayed. Then Sauvage isn’t for you. At least the original EDT

I've used about 80% of the 100ml bottle and I had enough. It does seem simplic to me today and I would rather wear something else but after a long break it will probably be great. I couldn't care less how popular and played out it is, it doesn't affect my relation to it in the slightest. Its good.

I did buy the clone versions of Sauvage and they weren’t very good. I since got rid of them.

You said what ruined this fragrance for you is what it’s become and what other people think about it. Isn’t that kind of the same thing younger Justin was doing by liking a fragrance based on what other people think, i.e. compliments?
I would’ve just assumed you’ve moved past it because it just doesn’t hold your attention anymore.

I only wear the elixir now... it gets me a stupid amount of compliments.
I'd guess it's in part due to my age and elixir fits me better now but the EDT did fit me better in my 20s and did get me compliments.
Over-all, Elixir is the sweetest, darkest and strongest of the bunch and fits a guy in his 30s much more appropriately than the EDT, however, if youre in your 20s, the EDT and EDP will do the job.

I still have some Eau Sauvage and it was my first “unisex” fragrance. I bought it because Tina Chow wore it and I really admired her style. I loved it. My second “unisex purchase was Jicky BTW. I don’t think I really got over the unfair reference to Eau Sauvage. I was hoping it would be more innovative, like Dior Homme and more referential, specifically referring to Eau Sauvage. Dior Sauvage IS the best selling fragrance worldwide male or female targeted.
I loved watching young Justin. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

I love Dior Sauvage, always have, it’s the second most selling fragrance at my store behind Creed Aventus still !!!! I would love to know Wht makes it so “basic” ? It’s a classic in my opinion!!

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  11 месяцев назад

First off, you’ve got a great name 👌🏾
Second, “basic” doesn’t translate to “bad”. While the fragrance smells very good and is highly functional, as far as the artistry of perfumery goes, it doesn’t offer anything interesting.
When Sauvage first came out, it was in heavy rotation for me. But as I started to discover hundreds and hundreds of great fragrances from brands that try to tell stories or paint pictures through scent, fragrances like Sauvage just didn’t fire the same synapses anymore. It’s more than about just “smelling good” to me at this point.
However, if you love Sauvage and the way it makes you feel, don’t let me persuade you. I don’t hate it and I objectively believe that it is a classic.

My first two colonges were Givenchy Gentlemen and Sauvage Edp. Gentlemen was too formal to wear everyday. So I'd use Sauvage. It's a good starting point but itsnt the best smell, it's a nice scent. Overhyped yes, but it is a nice point A. Then I expanded to other scents and appreciate all of them. I do however really want the Elixir because it gives a different vibe from the Edp.
