A Very Slow "Leap The Dips" on a Cold Day - October 8th, 2000

  • Ever want to know what happens when it's too cold to run a wooden coaster? This video will show you. This POV was shot on the world's oldest coaster, Leap The Dips. While the coaster normally isn't a speed machine by any stretch, the chilly weather and the fact that the car I was in hadn't had passengers before made for an extra slow ride. There is another POV with a faster ride that can be seen after the slow ride. This video was shot during the Ridefest Coaster event at Lakemont Park in Altoona, Pennsylvania on October 8th, 2000.

    3:02: Ladies and gentlemen, the most pointless brake run ever.
    Seriously, though, I wonder how the ride operators would have dealt with the situation had the ride stalled. I also like how you included a second POV at the end to show us how fast it _should_ go.

    Fantastic comparison Sean.
    I was literally laughing with all of you during the first ride. Although the second time was not El Toro speed it was surely fast enough to have an enjoyable ride. I never knew that coasters could slow down this much due to the cold weather.
    Thanks for the lesson and the ride~

    I was just thinking that you may have been shooting POV videos before anyone else ~

      Before we got into the car we were told it the the first time it had run with passengers. That would explain part of the slowness. I know of others that have shot POV years before I even had a camera. I like to document things and video is the easiest way of doing that. I have hundreds of POVs that I am sure will show up here one day. I have been shooting POV since 1994 I believe.

    That's a good old-fashioned roller coaster. I'd love to ride it one day. 😍🎢

      I rode it in 2020 and it was scary. Very scary. It wasn't running like it was when I recorded this video. First off, the track isn't in the best shape now. This results in the car bouncing around like mad. There is now airtime on it, which is kind of scary for a coaster that doesn't have a single restraint on it. I hope they take care of the ride so it can entertain for decades more.

    • @ladyrachel13

      @@SeanFlaharty it is an American original. I hope they take care of it. If it gets expensive maybe someone can start a Leap The Dips Appreciation Society or a rollercoaster enthusiast group that can raise funds for upkeep and repairs. This coaster like the Cyclone should have a Historical Plaque affixed to them.
      Thank you for your response. 🙋🏻‍♀️

    WOW!!! I've never ever seen or rode Leap The Dips when it was going THAT SLOW!!! Or for that matter that fast either! I've been on a fast run on it, but not that fast. At one point on your slow ride, I wasn't sure if you were going to make it all the way down.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  8 лет назад +2

      +sportsygirl8 We didn't think we were going to make it either. According to the operators, the car we were in was the first time it ran with passengers. Maybe that had something to do with it. Ha ha.

    • @sportsygirl8
      @sportsygirl8 8 лет назад

      Sean Flaharty That's a possibility, and to think how long it could have been sitting in there too and enduring all temps. Did they change cars the second time you rode it or was it the same one, but they put some WD40 on it?

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  8 лет назад +1

      +sportsygirl8 I believe it was a different car, and it was slightly warmer. I also stopped on the final curve of Toboggan because it was too cold. Lol.

      @sportsygirl8 8 лет назад

      Sean Flaharty Oh, I see, that makes more sense too about it being a little warmer out and different car. That car was like a rocket! Oh, gosh! That is really crazy. How did you get down?

      I was stopped in an area where the operator could walk over and give me a push to complete the last turn.

    It's sad how the coaster looks freshly painted here, but in some more recent videos I've seen of it, it kind of looks a bit under-conditioned considering it's the oldest coaster.

      It really was. I had ridden this coaster a few times over the years and never had a slow ride like that.

  • @solidifiedobjects
    @solidifiedobjects 2 месяца назад +1

    The cause of this problem can be attributed to the friction of the tracks gained during the cold weather. Additionally, chain lifts and motors may run in a reduced manner due to the thickening of oil and other solvents. Also the tracks can partially shrink due to the compression of most chemical molecules during the change in temperature. Older tracks have a higher risk of slowing down compared to newer tracks, and wood travels slower than metal.
    Provided there were no other people in the car is valid because there wasn't any time for the coaster's wheels and the track to warm up before. Having more passengers in the car would allow more force to be imposed on the tracks, especially if they leaned forward, causing the car to move faster. However that would be an unsafe idea.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  2 месяца назад

      Right before we got into the car, we were told we were the first passengers to take a ride in that car. They didn't even send it around to test. It wouldn't have made it back on its own so they just told us to ride and hope for the best. :)

    • @solidifiedobjects
      @solidifiedobjects 2 месяца назад

      @@SeanFlaharty Yep! Provided that there was no testing imposed on the car first they MAY have been partially responsible, but I wouldn't worry TOO much about it.

      It really was. Before we boarded the car that was running slow, the late and great Gary Baker told us that we were the first passengers ever in that car as it was just brought into service for the first time ever, that morning. I can't confirm that is indeed true but Gary did know his stuff.

      We had one in Whitley Bay,
      It was pulled down in the mid 70,s there's only a second off the coaster in the video that documents a fun fair by the name of the Spanish City.
      Plus the 2nd to get a
      Corkscrew coaster,
      Lame by today's roller coaster,s but hey it was the early 80,s & wow !
      I remember watching it being constructed. Then the wait to get on it, 5 hour's. But it was worth every minute & the £1.00 I paid.

    Whitley bay, Spanish City fair ground had a coaster just like this, it was taken down say 1976 ?
    Then in 1984 we got a corkscrew coaster. The line to go on it reached around 5 Hours.
    Very tame now, but in then days,
    WoW.
