  • I very recently purchased the Olympus OM D EM1 mark iii with the 12-40 PRO lens as a kit. I got it locally for a very good price so decided to buy it. The question is, did I make a mistake? In this, the first video of many, I highlight some of the cameras features.

I have owned the EM1 MIII since 2020 and love it. I sell my work online and through galleries, never have I had a situation where the camera didn't work for me!

Loving all the m43 content! I've been through countless Fuji bodies, z6 and z7 and finally landed on the E-m1 miii which I have stuck with and plan on using for a long long time. I just love its features, ergonomics, compactness. Really considering adding an E-P7 to the kit for when I want to go as portable as possible.

Love all OM-D cameras - just traveled to Barcelona with EM1 Mk1. Great images and loved it portability. Also, a 2nd hand body can be bought for significantly

The mk1 is great, video and tracking it’s aging but stills look excellent ! My 5mk2 is still a killer stills camera

I bought a EM1-II recertified from Olympus a few month back for little less than US $600 and very happy with the purchase. For a mark II I would have to spend more than twice that and the advantages of the III over the II do not justify $600 more if you are not a professional.

Are you pleased with your Mark ii? I'm looking at getting one.

@@davebellamy4867 Yes, very pleased. Going for the Mark III is a big $ step, the only thing I would like from the III is the enhance detection of birds when continous focus but I manage fine with the II. I upgraded from a em10-II mostly because of the 20Mpix and the better focusing. I compared the em1-II with the em5-III and decided the em1-II was a better purchase.
Photography is a hobby for me, I do not have any Pro lenses and still get really good pictures. For birding I use the Oly 75-300/ Also have the 9-18mm for wide, the 14-150 II as the main lens, the pana 20mm pancake for street photo and the YI 42.5mm for portraits. The YI is really sharp and cost around $50, if you don't care the lack of manual focus. Also got the TTartisan 7.5mm F2.0 Fisheye free for a review a few days back.
With the om1-II you shouild get the small flash and it does help, small, portable and powerfull enought ot be usable when needed.

I think we are getting to a point now any camera em1X and onwards is going to not age that much.. apart from maybe the evf, handheld high res mode and live nd will make this camera worthwhile even in 5 years

Well it’s a long time since I last came to your site and I’ll subscribe again as you’ve upped your game, good to see you out of the studio, great video and as camera collector I have many but I have Olympus as I love the size and for whatever reason I never struggle with them as I do with Fuji of which I have four Xt1 XT20 30 and 3 but I’m buying one of these at £630 with 6 months guarantee which is almost a third of original price! Good work and love the delivery without the distractions!

Focus clutch is not necessary if you set up the manual override option, as soon as you take the focus ring you can override the auto focus whether you use continuous or single AF, nothing to do but turn the focus ring............quick as you like, I disable the clutch on all my Pro lenses and use the C - AF+M across the board, with bright yellow focus peaking, I can always get sharp images....

The OM-1 has moved the front dial around the shutter button to a separate position. One has to move the index finger from the shutter button to the dial in order to use the dial. I can't see myself using any different finger, lol. Whatever you use the dial for, you gonna loose shooting opportunities when you do. Sure, I could put shutter speed somewhere else, but I really don't feel like it. I stay with my OM-D MK II (or upgrade to III).

    • @zanisgardening123-

Yes getting mine in June my em5mk2 is ready to retire can’t justify 3400 aus for a om1 but this camera is $2500 aus with a 12-40 pro so it was a easy compromise for me to go with this over the om1

      Hope this helps.

Hoping it’s still a good purchase at the end of 2023. My first camera with separate lenses after years of bridge cameras. Even if it is “old”, the price was great and I do not need a bleeding edge $$ system for my nature photography that is mostly for documentation purposes rather than Art. That said, I am looking forward to better image quality and hope some day I can convince my wife that I *need* one of the pro lenses 😊

Agree, menu can be a nightmare! Looked at this camera a couple of years ago and didn't go any further because of the horrendous menu. However a friend has the mk 2 and she worked me through it and it was clearer so have just got one with the 12-100 pro lens - fantastic, love it. My Menu is so useful!

I have the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and I want to trade it for an E-M1x. I want to have both photo and video capabilities in one body. I don't have the budget for a second body.
I'm struggling to decide whether its wise or not. I do video mainly but I'm looking to learn and get into photography because of my familys business. Is it a wise move?

It depends on how critical you are. I have shot 6400 as a test and it cleaned up nicely in Lightroom. OM Systems, OM Workspace is free and it also does a great job.

You are correct, it is a two handed operation for sure. You can re-map the function lever to be the power switch so the camera can be used with one hand.
